About
The Brownstone Inn can be found nestled along the winding M-28 Highway just outside of picturesque Au Train, Michigan. Purchased by Darrin Hubbard, Thomas Dolaskie, and Ana Dolaskie, of the Deployed Capital Group; the restaurant, and bar, have a long history of patronage due to its unique fare and historic architecture. The previous owners, Jeff Van Bremen & Deb Molitor, fell in love with the Brownstone on September 20, 1989, when searching for an investment property. At the time, the building had been closed for over two years; it was another two years before they were able to secure the purchase and begin renovations. In the following years, Jeff and Deb were fortunate to receive insights from visitors about the origins and history of the Brownstone Inn. What they learned was most of the structure was built from local materials.

This was a great dinner spot with the family after a beach day in Au Train. There are two picnic tables out front if you choose to order to-go, and inside the tables were well-distanced and masks required when not at your table. We had excellent service. The menu had plenty of options, there were multiple specials, and there are also plenty of beer/wine choices. We loved that they have kids menus, and our kids were happy to be able to order chocolate milk and chocolate pudding. The adults ordered different variations of the Lake Superior Whitefish, which were delicious. The only thing that was a little off-putting was the old reusable hand towel mechanism in the bathrooms, especially considering the pandemic. Overall, our service was excellent and we had a nice family meal.

Per a local vendor recommending we drove to the Brownstone Restaurant located about 3 miles west of Au Train. Built in 1945 and now on their 5 th owner and they have a consistent food. I ordered the Lemon Rosemary Chicken that was fall off the bone good. Fresh vegetables and real mashed potatoes rounded out the meal. Toss in a salad and it was a lot of food that I couldn’t finish. My wife ordered the fresh Whitefish that was very lightly breaded and fried. Just like my grandma made was my wife’s comment. The have full liquor service plus beer and wine. They do not take American Express.

My wife and I wanted a special place for her birthday dinner and we were very fortunate to find the Brownstone Inn. The place has an inviting, very tasteful old supper club feel to it with a very nice hostess and wait staff. The food is excellent and the menu offers a good range of choices, including things not often found at other establishments, such as liver and onions! The hostess (owner?) suggested a very fine craft beer and wine. The dessert menu was fine, offering cherry pie, cheesecake or a magnificent brownie with ice cream. If you are anywhere in this part of the Upper Peninsula, be sure to look this place up. Reservations are really necessary. The Sunday night we ate there, several people had to be turned away.

Delicious!! This is excellent homemade food! They serve a variety of dishes from appetizers to sandwiches, burgers, dinners and desserts. We loved the coleslaw and I had great French fries! The service was great. Please don’t forget dessert!

Had high hopes, waitress was very friendly and accommodating. Ordered the ribs what a mistake first they came out cold and they microwaved them, the ribs were the kind you buy at the store that are vacuum sealed in a package absolutely terrible, if i owned a restaurant I would be ashamed to serve these. At least the baked potato was good.

My husband & I had been site seeing (waterfalls) so stopped here for an early dinner. My husband had the whitefish sandwich, he said it was the best fish sandwich he'd ever had- the fish was broiled rather than breaded. I had the bacon, romaine, tomato sandwich- very good!! The bacon was crispy, just the way Iike it. Handcut fries came with the sandwiches and they also were delicious. Our server, Robert, was friendly, attentive and efficient. The only criticism would be in the women's bathroom- the toilet seat is facing the sink and is way too close. If someone bent over fast, they could probably bump their head or knock out some teeth.

Service excellent, atmosphere excellent, dirinks excellent, Food and prices very poor. Spouse had 34 dollar porterhouse which was tough and hard to cut. Dinner rolls you could not even break in half to butter they were so hard. Ceasar salad was more of an Italian salad, stale croutons, but chicken was good. It certainly was not a Ceasar salad as that is my favorite and I know a Ceasar salad when I eat one. My husband and I were very disappointed and would probably not go back again and we live in the area.

Ouch! Sounds like we struck out with you. Very sorry that your experience was a disappointment. A porterhouse should always be a delight. We will try to monitor the quality of our supplies better.

We have always loved coming here every UP trip we make. Obviously with all the constantly changing things in our state, we have learned to look ahead to be planful around restaurants. From the 2-3 places I searched, it appeared The Brownstown Inn would be open for lunch on Saturday. The sign hanging outside said lunch and dinner but we didn’t understand the sign on the door. The door was still open and we were informed they weren’t opening until 3. I realize this was added in some places, but definitely could have been communicated as frequently as other information on their social media. Signs outside or even taking the misleading banner down could have helped us know it was closed. We went somewhere a half hour down the road that was completely packed. We have always preferred the ambiance and never minded the 2 person crew service- even laughed at other people who might leave. We were truthfully just sad we never got to go and probably would have changed our plans around based on their updated availability, if it would have been easier to find!

We ate here while staying just down the road. It was good but not great. The French Onion soup was good, and their version of the French Dip was also good- but it was so falling apart- because of the bread? the way it was filled?- it was hard to eat. My kids had chicken fingers, which they liked. It was kind of expensive for what it was, but we knew that and just wanted something close to where we were staying. Very cute and cozy decor. Service charge (for credit card) added to the check even though we were paying cash. Maybe they just assumed? Very friendly service.

I give this great place a five-star review! Sherry was our waitress: fantastic service while the place was very busy. She returned numerous times without being intrusive to ask what we might need. The food was great, hot and presented tastefully. Sherry even gave me her pen. Morgan the bartender was also very accommodating and came to our table to check about any drinks we might want and explained them. I got a fantastic burger and great battered French fries, the table also got pasta and sandwiches. All very well made, tasty and exactly how we ordered them. Kudos to this gem in the U.P.! As a Trip Advisor reviewer, I rarely give food five stars, but this place nailed it!

This was a bit of a drive from our hotel, but well worth it. Started with the chowder which was a huge bowl and delicious! Hubby had the elk meatloaf and I had the short ribs. Both were very tasty although the short ribs were very fatty. Service was fast and efficient. We ate dinner early after a day of hiking and got right in. When we left there were a number of people waiting to be seated at around 5:30.

This restaurant has charm and ambiance in a beautifully designed wooden cabin. I had a lunch special bison burger which was well prepared along with their fries. The waitress was very polite and had worked for the restaurant for many years. She provided a wonderful history of the inn and its ownership over the years. It’s a great place I’ll try again when I visit the area!

This gem is just 30 minutes from Marquette and about 40 minutes from Gwinn. It was well worth the drive along the scenic Lake Superior shoreline, especially on a warm autumn afternoon. The eclectic yet casual atmosphere set the tone for a relaxing evening. The waitstaff was kind and attentive. The food was the absolute STAR of the evening. The four of us shared an ample portion of Lobster Nachos that was absolutely to die for. My Maple Bourbon Steak was perfection. Everyone else had a variety of burgers that they each raved about. With so many delicious options on the menu we will be back!

Tried several times to secure a reservation. Whom ever answered the phone hung up immediately. I was told reservation were necessary because it is a very small place. We decided to go anyway...that was our second mistake. We waited over 45 minutes for a table. It took the staff 10 minutes to wipe the table off, another 10 minutes to at least get a drink. Another 15 minutes to take our order. 35 minutes later our burgers arrived way overcooked. Fried were semi warm. Run, don't walk away from this place.
