Our Favorite place for Fabulous Indian Food in AA

Whenever we are looking for some authentic Indian food we head to Shalimar. The spice is always right and the service is top notch. Ashu and Iqbal are always there to make sure our favorite wine is on the table and make new recommendations for vegetarian dishes that make great leftovers the next day. Don’t forget the garlic naan!

Nice Surprise

Stopped in for lunch with my wife. First time visit. We ordered lunch special which provided a great variety of tasty food. more than enough to eat and great value. Our server,Ashu, was very attentive. our waters were filled up 3Xs but at same time was not intrusive. Enjoyed a nice glass of wine in a relaxed atmospher with soft music in background. if you like Indian food i would definately recommend Shalimar. Note they also did a good job spacing customers creating a very comfortable space for everyone.

OUTSTANDING CATERING

Shalimar catered the dinner for our son's wedding in July 2023. It was absolutely a delicious spread, enjoyed and savored by every guest who attended the event. We had many guests specifically complimenting the chef and the tasty dishes they made. Special favorites were the Tawa Bhindi and Baingan, the Tandoori Chicken and the Lamb Rogan josh. Rasmalai was excellent. They also accommodated our request to make a special item which is the bride's favorite, though not on their regular menu. From the starting phone call, owner Samir Patel was prompt, courteous and very responsive and professional. He made sure he personally came with his helpers to the venue. The success of many a wedding depends on the food we serve, so thank you Samir and Shalimar for making or happy event a resounding success. God Bless! Anu P.

Reasonably good food, terrible service

The food is quite good, but the service is so bad as to damage the quality of the food. Starter dish salad arrived 45 minutes after we ordered. Papadams, which are supposed to be crispy were rubbery and had to be torn, as they did not break. Seekh kabob, which is supposed to be served hot and juicy arrived cold and dried out.

If you want someone to tell your dad to F off

If you want someone to tell your dad to “f***off” after paying him tens of thousands of dollars to cater multiple events at your wedding, Sam Patel is your guy. In a child like manner, he might even hang up on your father three times, only to call him back and then tell him to “f*** off”. As a fellow Gujarati, I genuinely hate writing this review as I love to see our people thrive, but I’m making an exception (on my honeymoon no less) for Sam. He’s been harassing my father-in-law and wife to call him, because I think he’s afraid of exactly this review. So here it is, Sam. Food quality aside, though it was mediocre to average at best, Sam ran out of food at our reception this past weekend. For those of you who have been to an Indian wedding reception, this is a parent of the groom’s (or bride’s) worst nightmare. Instead of taking responsibility for the food quantity, Sam proceeded to blame the venue, wedding planners, and client (us) for his shortcomings. And before he can blame something / someone else, we actually had a significantly lower number of attendees than we shared with him due to Covid-related travel issues. I’m not sure if Sam has become either complacent, egotistical, or both as a result of having one of few Indian restaurants near the Ann Arbor campus, but what should be a professional establishment seems like it has become the opposite as a result of his management. As a Ross grad, I learned a thing or two about business while attending the University of Michigan, and trust me when I say telling a client to “f*** off” was not included in the curriculum. I’ve been to Shalimar a number of times while at the university, and though it might have a good chef and service people in smaller quantities, I can’t help but ask you to at least consider the other incredible options in the Detroit / Ann Arbor area for your larger events (Venkat at Vindu and Matt at Nu Deli are absolute gems). I hate to have to share this with my fellow Michigan alums and family friends who have weddings coming up in the next few years, but I would hate it more for them to experience what we did.

My wife and I went for dinner here on a recent week-long trip to Ann Arbor. Service (Kurt B) was fast and friendly. Food was hot and tasty; chicken tikka masala (nice and spicy), keema naan, and a fresh mango lassi. Total was ~$30 pp with tax, plus tip.

My wife and I went here for dinner during a recent visit to Ann Arbor. Service (Kurt B) was fast and friendly. I had chicken tikka masala (hot), keema naan, and a mango lassi. The food was hot, fresh, and tasty. Good location, right downtown, with lots of pedestrian traffic. Cost was ~$27 with tax, before tip. (My wife was on an expense account, so I don't know what here total was and can't remember what she ate. Lamb vindaloo, I think, which was also very good.)

Excellent lunch buffet that we happened on while spending some time in AA. There were gluten free options that were amazing. Chicken butter curry was to die for. Will definitely be back again.

20% tip is forced automatically

We (3 family members) had dinner at Shalimar Ann Arbor yesterday. Food was great and the service was good. However, they add 20% service fee automatically to the final bill and prompting for writing down additional tip with options 15%, 20% and 25%. This is not right and should this be considered as misleading and fraud? Shalimar, I request to change this process. Although customers usually tip minimum of 15% as tip, you can not automatically take 20% and again asking for additional tip. Thanks for consideration.

BAD service at Shalimar, Ann Arbor!

We went there for lunch at Shalimar in Ann Arbor, we asked to be seated outside , since it was sunny and hot we asked for a table in the shade, the waiter was so rude, he didn’t want to seat us in the shade even when a couple just vacated a table which was in the shade! Seems it will take long to clean a very small table! This restaurant should send their managers and waiters to the neighboring restaurants to learn how to treat their customers! Worse service ever! Not to mention their website states they offer thali which was not available! Must be family members giving this restaurant any stars!
