We were looking forward to eating at "360", currently the only restaurant with a Michelin star in Dubrovnik and one of only ten in the entire country. Online booking only opens 1 month in advance and, having booked at the earliest opportunity, we were lucky...enough to secure a table on the ancient fortifications directly overlooking the Old Harbour. My wife and I are fortunate enough to have visited a considerable number of restaurants worldwide with 1 or more Michelin stars, most recently 2 such restaurants in Malta, and hopefully I now have a fairly objective opinion of comparative restaurants and am not overawed by their status. I therefore hope that my critical comments are taken in this context. "360" offers a tasting menu at HRK 1,160 (c.£145) and 2 and 3 course a la carte menus (plus "intros" i.e. amuse bouche) at HRK 720 and HRK 880 respectively (c.£90/£110). We selected 2 of the 3-course dinners, and for the 3rd course, we asked to share a cheese platter (albeit at a supplement of HRK 120) , and also share a dessert, so that we could both experience savoury and sweet to end the meal. The chef demonstrated great creativity and a good understanding of flavours, textures and presentation in the first 2 courses, but the portion size was woefully small. For example, there were only 2 langoustines as a starter (served with sauce, gel and garnish) and the pigeon consisted of a single seared breast and confit leg. Anybody who knows pigeon will realise how small this is, even with a garnish, and we were certainly glad of the "intro"/amuse bouche that started the meal. The cheese course was disappointing bland. Ironically, the best cheese was a Shropshire from our home country, although from experience elsewhere, we were aware that very worthwhile Croatian cheeses are available and we were surprised that a better, more imaginative selection was not provided at "360". The shared chocolate desert was, however, very well presented and executed. Unsurprisingly, there was an extensive selection of (expensive) wines, although we were content with our selection of better value Croatian wine, preceded by 2 glasses of prosecco. The service throughout was friendly and professional, although being asked 4 times whether we wanted another bottle of water (at c.£8 a bottle!) was verging on pushy! I should add that we were only offered San Pellegrino mineral water, rather than the excellent local equivalent, Jamnica. Following coffee, we asked for the bill, but immediately noted that the cheese plate had been charged at the equivalent of £34, rather than £15 (HRK 120). It then transpired that, contrary to our order, we appeared to have been charged for two 2-course meals and that the shared cheese plate and dessert had been charged as separate supplementary items. We quickly explained this to the Head Waiter, who kindly removed the supplementary charge and went on to say that this problem had arisen several times previously, that the menu was "confusing" and that he had brought the issue to the attention of senior management, who had taken no steps to rectify the problem. Sorry, but not good enough for a restaurant of this quality...and price! Our final bill for 2 people (ex. tip) was HRK 2,404 (c.£300), which we did not consider was good value, particularly considering the small portions and issues with the bill. By comparison, our previous and better meal at a Michelin star restaurant (in Valletta) cost 239 Euros (c.£200).More
