Toko Baru is a staple for the Antigua community. It's a favorite among travelers who crave a taste of India and want to enjoy familiar offerings of falafel, masala, curries, and more. They even offer half portions for a lighter lunch, a variety of imported...beers, and serve all meals with 2 signature sauces. Me favorite is a falafel served in a pita with a cup of rosa de jamaica!More

I live in the US but I come to Antigua for work a few times per year. I eat at TOKO every time I come -- often more than once. The food is consistently good. I've never had any sort of issues with feeling ill...afterward (as some recent reviewers have indicated). Keep in mind that Toko is always super busy -- probably one of the most consistently busy places in town -- so there are a LOT of people who eat here every day/week/month. Just based on the numbers alone, there are bound to be some people who get a traveler's bug around the same time they eat at TOKO. I would be honestly very surprised if they're getting sick from this food though. The kitchen is spotless, front & center right when you walk in the door, and open for everyone to see. I don't know the percentage of repeat customers but I do know it's high. I don't know anyone that's only eaten here once. Not everyone loves the food -- fair enough -- but most do. And if you do, you'll definitely be back. Again and again.More

Very tasty and inexpensive lunch. We liked it so much that we came back the following day. Quick service too!

With so many great food places in Antigua, I wouldn't risk getting sick to eat here. The serving sizes are generous and the dishes are well priced. All the dishes seem to be served up with a side salad, which can be a risky move...when in Central America. I skipped the lettuce but ate the carrots and other items on the plate. There was some wilted spinach that I had a fair bit of which I thought seemed a bit questionable at the time. After eating here I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I had a mild case of food poisoning. I didn't throw up, but I couldn't stop burping. I took a pill for it and felt better. Later that day I met two people who were still recovering from a bad bout of food poisoning and they told me they got it from this restaurant when they are there a few days previously. A friend that we ate with at this restaurant also told us he felt mildly ill the morning following eating here and he took a pill for it and was ok. My husband ate the same dishes as us and was fine. The food tastes ok and is very filling. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and seems quite popular. However if I had my time over again I would avoid this place. They accept cash only.More

Dear Bucketlistraveler Thanks for visiting Toko Baru! I’m very sorry to hear you got sick while traveling – that of course is very unpleasant while being on a trip! You are correct- we are quite popular, mostly with repeat guests who have been coming for...More

Located near cafe No Se on Avenida 1 sur, this place has the best food for the best price. Healthy portions, unlike other high end restaurants in the area. Middle eastern and Indian cuisine.

Toku Baru is a great non-meat heavy option for Antigua travelers. They have great middle eastern and Indian flavors that are refreshing, spicy (if you want!) and overall delicious.

I are there six months ago, maybe more and had the falafel. After I spent the rest of the day and night on the toilet. This time I had the fish and chips, with the same experience. I question how often they charge the oil...they fry things in, if at all.More

This restaurant was highly recommended and we tried it. The food and beer were very good and we heard that they make a great Belgium-style fish and chips. However the place has all the charm of dormitory room: crowded, no view and noisy. Food -5,...the rest -1 = average for rating.More

Oh dear, it really wasn’t good. Was it an off day? Not so sure. I ordered the chicken shawarma. The three sauces arrived first. I tasted them as I waited and my expectations plummeted. The ‘white’ sauce was flavourless with the texture of wallpaper paste...(nothing fresh going on in there). Then a red sauce of unknown flavour with a second chilli sauce, that was ok. The chicken shawarma arrived and was large in size. Unfortunately the chicken was breast meat and had previously been cooked producing a rubbery texture and without any flavour, zero, no garlic, cumin, paprika or lemon was detected. These sad on cold hard previously fried potatoes with the salad, which I can’t comment on. The try of chicken, potatoes and dips couldn’t allow me proceed even though I was starving and it was lunchtime. Based on my experience it’s a no no from me.More

Don' t understand the good reviews. They surely did not eat the same as we did. The chicken tandoori was very dry unable to eat and indonesian dish the beef stew was from a very old cow. Can not recommend!
