About
Toko Baru was founded in 2008. The menu is quite eclectic and can be described as pan-Asian and mid eastern. Toko Baru strives to serve a great quality meal for a fair price. Toko Baru has become a staple among locals as well as the expat and traveler community in Antigua. All food is prepared locally and Toko Baru prides itself on some very tasty meals like the Shoarma Kebab- The choice of how to eat the meal lies with the customer- the options are: in a Pita Bread- in a wheat tortilla (as a burrito) or on a plate with Rice. All meals are served with our sauces- a yogurt garlic based sauce, a fruity sauce – and a very hot version of a Sambal sauce (made out of local chilies).

I ate at Toko Baru twice while in Antigua. The first time I ordered one of the Indian curries and really didn't like the way it was spiced. Maybe others would, I don't know. I also didn't really understand that you could eat outdoors there,...which you should definitely do. The second time I ordered a falafel in pita, and it was five stars. Loved the selection of sauces brought to the table too. Service was excellent.More

I ordered half a falafel+ half a Kofta + some Sweet patato Fries. I enjoyed the Fries a lot but the falafel/Kofta with Rice was not very special. The garden in the back is very nice and they were playing life music. Seems more a...place to have a beer and some fastfood than a quality meal. Service was quick and friendly.More

I was recommended Toko Baru by a local friend and it doesn’t disappoint. Really good food, big portions, chill vibe, super attentive and friendly staff, and affordable! Love hanging out in the garden drinking jamaica juice. Came back multiple times!

Had tikka masala- very tasty. For the price you pay it’s insane value for money. Large portion. Will certainly be back.

i like the atmosphere and the staff was super nice! they serve a lot of different (mostly german beer) but the food was not really satisfying. spring rolls and falafel were good but the tika masala has nothing to do with indian food. overroasted currypowder...without any sauce served with half a plait of unsaisoned raw salad? the res corquettes taste like tamales but the veggie ones are good! super prices thoooMore

If you’re looking for cheap fast food this is a place to go however if you’re looking for authentic Indian curries authentic Indonesian dishes you’ll be disappointed the Indonesian is not authentic and neither is the Indian food the Dahl isn’t Dahl it’s chickpeas It...wasn’t even cooked properly it’s overly spiced the beef rendang is kind of the Indonesian dish i’ve lived in Indonesia for several years including India the other dishes that were ordered on our table were very average as I said before if you’re looking for a cheap fast food that sort of taste like Indian food or Indonesian food this is a place to go I don’t understand all the reviews that seem to be so good but when a dish comes out within five minutes of ordering you’ve really got a question how are they putting it together this is fast food and cheapMore

Toko Baru is a staple for the Antigua community. It's a favorite among travelers who crave a taste of India and want to enjoy familiar offerings of falafel, masala, curries, and more. They even offer half portions for a lighter lunch, a variety of imported...beers, and serve all meals with 2 signature sauces. Me favorite is a falafel served in a pita with a cup of rosa de jamaica!More

I live in the US but I come to Antigua for work a few times per year. I eat at TOKO every time I come -- often more than once. The food is consistently good. I've never had any sort of issues with feeling ill...afterward (as some recent reviewers have indicated). Keep in mind that Toko is always super busy -- probably one of the most consistently busy places in town -- so there are a LOT of people who eat here every day/week/month. Just based on the numbers alone, there are bound to be some people who get a traveler's bug around the same time they eat at TOKO. I would be honestly very surprised if they're getting sick from this food though. The kitchen is spotless, front & center right when you walk in the door, and open for everyone to see. I don't know the percentage of repeat customers but I do know it's high. I don't know anyone that's only eaten here once. Not everyone loves the food -- fair enough -- but most do. And if you do, you'll definitely be back. Again and again.More

With so many great food places in Antigua, I wouldn't risk getting sick to eat here. The serving sizes are generous and the dishes are well priced. All the dishes seem to be served up with a side salad, which can be a risky move...when in Central America. I skipped the lettuce but ate the carrots and other items on the plate. There was some wilted spinach that I had a fair bit of which I thought seemed a bit questionable at the time. After eating here I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I had a mild case of food poisoning. I didn't throw up, but I couldn't stop burping. I took a pill for it and felt better. Later that day I met two people who were still recovering from a bad bout of food poisoning and they told me they got it from this restaurant when they are there a few days previously. A friend that we ate with at this restaurant also told us he felt mildly ill the morning following eating here and he took a pill for it and was ok. My husband ate the same dishes as us and was fine. The food tastes ok and is very filling. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and seems quite popular. However if I had my time over again I would avoid this place. They accept cash only.More
