Since Covid-19, we've been doing carryout regularly; and as such, have been trying new restaurants and old favorites. My wife, son and I find that House of Hunan offers the best carryout in the Annapolis area. Not only is the food fresh, but it doesn't contain a lot of fillers that one finds at other carryouts. Too often, when you order an entre, it is filled with a lot of broccoli or celery. These no doubt add to the flavor, but should not be overpowering or used as a filler simply because they are cheaper than meat, poultry or seafood. This will continue to be our go-to place for chinese food.

We were happy with the quick and attentive service but the quality of the food was average. The hot & sour soup was the best part of the meal. The egg roll that came with the combination lunch meal was actually a spring roll. Do not expect the large, traditional egg roll. The lunch prices were very reasonable.

In this time of Covid-19, we decide to try carryout because the restaurant is close to home, but is not open for seating service. The food was not spectacular, but was well prepared and very enjoyable. Instead of trying to add excessive amounts of celery and broccoli to save on protein, the dishes had the correct balance of everything. Don't go here for unusual dishes, but just go to enjoy well prepared standard Chinese'American fare.

This was our third try with them. We had so missed the Chinese options we had in the DC metro area and decided to try this. Three times of home delivery. Food came when promised but...
Best things we tried were the Spring Rolls and Beef Chow Foon. Todays option of Kung Pao shrimp was high on peanuts and sauce and low on taste. The BBQ ribs were just barely cooked enough and slathered in sweet sauce. We previously had pork fried rice which was bland and had more rice than veggies or pork. We will not try them again.

We went because all the old reviews were pretty excellent! I noticed the most reviews were from 2012 after we already went. We went on a Saturday night around 7:30pm.
There were two other tables occupied only. It seemed a bit run down and dirty… I had misgivings and the waitress who greeted us had a mask halfway over her mouth and it was so hard to tell if she spoke at all… a bit unhappy and angry.
She would roll her eyes if you asked her what she said, etc. Very passive aggressive and hard to understand. The other lady waitress was no better. Very unhappy.
Water glasses were dirty as well as table cloth and lazy Susan… We had to ask for silverware and napkins after our food came.
The owners (lady and man) were very kind and sweet. They were the best part of the visit.
The beef lo mein was ok, the chicken pad Thai was the best thing possibly but had a powdery and granular texture without much flavor. The orange chicken we ordered came out as general Tso’s and came with only 1/2 cup of steamed rice. The beef fried rice was good from others at our table, but it looked like it had a lot of onions. Some may like that though.
Overall wouldn’t go again. Maybe needs a big cleanup and revamp of their dishes and get some happier waitstaff. :)

I have had an urge for Chinese food for quite sometime and House of Hunan used to be one of our favorite restaurants. My wife and I decided to go back recently and were so happy that the menu hadn't changed and still had our favorite dishes and drinks. I asked if Tom the owner was still there and he came out and greeted us and remembered us from years ago. All of the wait staff was friendly and we were not disappointed in the food. We ordered Singapore Rice Noodle, which last time we visited didn't have a lot of shrimp or pork in it. This time everything was great! Wanton Soup was very good and the Kung Pow Chicken was as good as I always remembered. We look forward to revisiting very soon.

My husband and I had a nice dinner on a week night. We were seated right away, the food came out hot in large portions, and the hot washcloths at the end were a nice touch.

The Chinese restaurant I like was closed today. I went to house of Hunan, and the the food was terrible. Shrimp with snow peas and hot and sour soup. The soup was thin and the shrimp dish tasted like plastic. Even the rice was off. Employees were friendly and helpful. Last time was 4 years ago. I won’t go back. I wish them well.

We have lived in Annapolis for over three decades and this is by far the best Chinese. For a while there was another place that was good, but it was sold to new owners and declined. Spring rolls are crispy but not overdone. Sweet and sour chicken comes much better than others (with carrot, green pepper, onion, and pineapple) as it should, all white meat and perfectly crispy. My husband's Szechwan beef, which he ordered “spicy”, actually came that way (unlike every other place we have ordered from, zero spice). This place has not survived for 30+ years for no reason. The day I picked-up carry out (early 4:30) there were 4 other people there picking up at the same time. There were posts about rude workers, the older gentleman at the counter who was managing takeout orders greeted everyone warmly...he looked like he has been there a while.

First, the food. We had the house lo mien and twice-cooked pork. The lo mien was so-so--almost all noodles and not much else. The twice-cooked pork had a delicious sauce, and the pork didn't have too much MSG, but some of the cabbage was from the base of the head, and the pieces were too thick and not cooked enough to eat.
Now, to the atmosphere. The cashier was friendly and nice, but the owner ruined things. First, he seemed upset with a customer who thought the beef and broccoli should have onions. Then, he lambasted the delivery driver in full view and hearing of the customers. The driver, who I take is was new, could not confirm a delivery address, so he called the woman to find out where he was supposed to deliver it. I overheard him calling, and the woman said she was in Annapolis, but she was in Arnold. When he said he will check on delivery, the woman cancelled the order.
The owner was not happy, first angrily yelling at him in the back, then again out in the front. He said it was his business, and only he could call someone.
I don't think the delivery guy did anything wrong, but it isn't my restaurant nor rules. However, if the owner has issues, he shouldn't have brought them out into the seating area. I felt very uncomfortable, as did my wife. I could see that others felt the same way by their grimaces.
Bottom line is adequate food, but not a pleasant experience.

It's getting harder to find good local restaurants for certain cuisines. For some reason there's a shortage of local Chinese restaurants where you can sit in a nice quite ambiance for a leisurely Chinese meal. Most of the local ones are either take out or storefront with a scattering of tatty chairs to eat off styrofoam or plastic.
House of Hunan fits the bill - classic mid-priced restaurant with linen on the tables and laps and efficient and competent staff. Good food also is critical and HoH provides a diverse menu of traditional Americanized dishes plus some creative offerings.
Delicious chicken corn soup, very hot. Flavorful twice cooked pork - yummy classic. Asparagus with beef shrimp and scallops in a colorful potato-based birds nest - creative presentation of a well balanced dish!
Worth keeping in mind when you don't want take out.

The food was excellent. We have eaten at the House of Hunan for at least 30 years, but it had been at least a year since our last experience which was very good. However, this time, the food was very tasty and a good value. I'm assuming there was a change in management as the old crew was no longer working at the restaurant.

We often come here for family birthday celebrations as it's a favorite of a few. Tonight, we had a party of 18 scheduled for a birthday dinner (we have a HUGE family) and the power went out across Annapolis 15 minutes before our reservation! As we were all in route anyway, we stop in to regroup to find the doors open and they're ready for us. No power, no problem... House of Hunan cooks with GAS! So with a little improvisation with flashlights and a quick trip to the dollar store, which DID have power, to buy some votive candles, we had a truly fun and memorable evening and we had the place to ourselves. The staff worked diligently to make sure everything ran smoothly and tasted great. Nothing was delayed by the power loss and our family was grateful to be able to continue our one of many celebrations here (because where else were we going to find a table for 18 in a city that's lost half it's power?) We had lots of laughs and the candles created a beautiful table. Per usual, I ordered what I always order... Tom's Special Eggplant! "Tom Recommends It!" Eggplant wrapped shrimp lightly breaded and fried and in a lovely peppery sauce. And as always, we started with the steamed dumplings. All was lovely.
Thanks again to House of Hunan and amazing staff for making this night something really special under what I'm sure were not the most ideal circumstances for them. Amazing job!
