Heard about this place before I arrived in Bucharest. Tried to book an online reservation but their website seemed a bit suspect and so I decided not to leave the personal information required for online bookings. Turned up hoping for a lunch. Most of the other numerous restaurants in the vicinity were nearly empty at this time of day, their staff outside trying to persuade passing footfall in. Caru' cu bere, however was heaving, in fact, buzzing. I requested an inside table and although asked if I had a reservation - and didn't - was shown inside. The interior was glorious, living up to all my expectations. No sooner was I seated than a tour group of fifty or sixty arrived at tables behind me. Despite this, the service was prompt, slick, and very professional. Live music began playing, and lifted the atmosphere inside to even greater heights. The beautiful walls, ceilings and windows, made for a perfect backdrop to a delightful lunch. The centrepiece bar was a magnificent sight. I had a turkey breast salad and a dark beer. The salad was huge, and very tasty. I came out of Caru' cu bere on a high. Thoroughly recommended.

The atmosphere, decor and story behind this restaurant are good. However, we experienced poor service and cold food that was nowhere near as authentic and tasty as other less expensive restaurants we have tired this trip. Disappointing as we were expecting so much more

This restaurant has been serving the locals of Bucharest since the time of Charles II. The building is beautiful. Be sure to try Mici sausages and drink the local beer. We were lucky to be seated upstairs from where we had a great view of the traditional dancers who performed from time to time, and at one point all the chefs came out to well-deserved applause. We had a house special knuckle of pork for two, some Mici sausages, a few drinks and a dessert all for 200 lei. Great value.

I arrived in winter around 1400, not a lot of tourists, and found the place to be moderately busy so I was initially excited to dine there. The hostess sat me directly behind the hostess stand at the front door, so close they had to walk around me to seat other guests. I sat down and opened the menu and was immediately surprised at how expensive it was. It didn't take long before the waitress came to take my order but before she did she coughed on me. When the food arrived it looked like a bad attempt at trying to make it look like the appetizing meal pictured on the menu. I had the ribs (AKA Duke's Dish) and while it was cooked it had the texture of something that had been sitting in the over or under a warming lamp for over an hour. The meal was severely lacking in flavor and freshness. I followed the meal with a desert, only because the meal left me hungry. The desert, the donuts, was delightful. It had a great contrast of flavor between the sweet cherries and sharp cheese. It was a very large serving and I could not finish it all. All together I was dissatisfied with the overall experience.

They are not very polite. When you arrive, they invite you to the bar and after an half hour they call you even if the restaurant isn’t full. The beer and the dishes (I took the pork shin with polenta) are quite good but they are more expensive than other restaurants.

When taking a tour of Transylvania from Bucharest, the host recommended Caru’ cu bere as a must see visit destination for a taste of Romanian food. While I made a beeline for it that evening, I found that his claims it was the most popular restaurant in the capital were far from an exaggeration. There was no danger I was getting near a table. As such I opted to go in for lunch the following day, and while not filled to the rafters as it was the evening before, it was still very much alive with tourists and locals alike. The restaurant has a large outdoor section, which as per the norm, has a tented over, heated cover in winter, but the real joy is sitting inside. A VERY well preserved traditional Neo-Gothic building with intricate wood, stone and stained-glass design, this almost looks like it was converted from a church. The staff are dressed traditionally, and I was led up the tight spiral staircase to the small upstairs section which overlooks the action. And action! This is a popular destination for tourists in its own right (it has its own gift shop) and I feel they find the perfect balance between playing to that and not taking it too far. As such they have live folk musicians and the traditional costumes and menu, but stop there to let you take it in. As for the menu, it hosts a nice variety of traditional Romanian dishes and classic fair. My server was polite and even took the decent step of informing me I was maybe ordering too many sides given the stodgy nature of my main. On the subject of my main, I opted for the pork and beans, which was delicious and something of a local favourite. I came in at a very fair price for such a popular restaurant for this, a side of potatoes and a drink, and all in I was pleasantly surprised with my bill. Overall, I’ve got to say Caru’ cu bere does indeed live up to its billing. I’m not sure you should visit Bucharest without stopping by, albeit if you’re going at dinner time you might want to book ahead.

First time I entered the location was during my first year of university. Irrelevant, you would say, but it was my first year in Bucharest and I was trying out lots of restaurants at that time. Many of them did not surprise me at all, but when I entered this one, I literally felt like I was on the Titanic. Probably because of the walls. At the same time, I could feel that Christmassy 🎄Home Alone atmosphere. At that time, I was also on a budget, so I was pleased to find out they had student menus where you could make up your own combinations, on a very low price, compared to the other dishes. July 2019 brought me back on the terrace together with my family. The waiter, I remember, was very friendly, with a sense of humor, the only less positive part being all the noise around us, but it was understandable since it was the peak summer and a lot of foreign tourists were having lunch there. I'm recommending you!

This is a total tourist restaurant, beautiful and huge. The service is fine although lots of attitude starting with the hostess and extending to the servers. We were in Romania in November and we had difficulties finding a good salad and the salad here was pretty good. My husband had a meat and potatoes meal that was also good. We did have the traditional Romanian dessert of donuts with jam and sour cream and they were delicious. We sat upstairs looking over the bar and it was fun to look over the action. They have this process to foam up the beer which was interesting to watch. There was also had folk dancers but we mostly just saw the tops of their heads. Old Town has a bunch of tourist restaurants and this was the best we ate at but not our best meal. The building is just lovely, food is average to above average, but the snooty service made the experience less than what it should be. I saw other reviews with similar comments - I guess their reputation and location keeps people coming even with poor service.

This is Bierkeller-meets-Bucharest, all authentic 1880s paintwork, panelling and stained glass. It is, genuinely, a German brewery restaurant; if in doubt just join in the very Bavarian folk dancing laid on every 30 minutes after 9pm. It’s noisy, it’s crowded and a tad touristy although with a good number of Romanians too. I don’t think you can book, so just rock up, elbow your way to the bar, and have a beer while you wait and you’re soon whisked upstairs or downstairs to a table. The menu is extensive with a wide range of Romanian soups, meats and fish - mine was both fresh and tasty. Good for a group but slightly less so for a tête a tête; nonetheless service was very attentive and the food very good.

What a disappointment! Service was really bad - the waiter messed our order and gave us wrong dish. Then he tried to blame us for it. He was rude and didn't want to help. The food? My "lamb pastrami" was dry and really hard to chew. Only good thing was traditional Romanian dessert. Of course - place is beautiful, bit I think they rely only on that. So if you want to go there, just go to see the interior and then go to eat somewhere else!

I used to love this place a few years back but last visit here was terrible. It took quite a while for someone to get our order, and then my dish was brought in 15-20 minutes, while my boyfriend's took almost an hour. Not to mention i got sick after eating their papanasi (which did taste heavenly, to be honest)

The food is getting worse and worse, the wine is terrible and comes in an almost empty glass. I had the worst beef salad money can buy in Bucharest and the worst wine. The sweets are good. It has become a tourist trap, with occasional live music, which is nice but starts late 14.30 and ends in like 20 mins. The services and location are great.

The Caru' cu bete reminds You to one of the original breweries in the south of Germany - traditionally furnished, but very full and touristic. Especially in the sunny months it attracts to many tourists to go to the Caru' cu bete and therefore it can take a bit longer to Order and to get food. Nevertheless you should have a look, if you are already in Bucharest.

This place worth a visit because of the beautiful bulging, the nice enviroment and the friendly staff! The food is tasteless and quite expensive for what it offers. The waiting for a table is long and if you want to make a reservation you have to do it many days ago but of course this has nothing to do with the restaurant but with the big number of people arriving there all day. BUT we also tried a traditional desert called Papanasi which was really really GOOD and we left the restaurant with a nice taste in our mouth.

This was our first meal in Romania. We love trying local cuisine and visiting historical places. This one is both - a wide choice of Romanian dishes and the oldest brewery in Bucharest (opened in 1879). The building is classed as a historical monument - the sign outside confirms this fact and it’s very very beautiful outside and especially inside. Stained glass windows, wooden furniture, colorful ceilings - all of that makes a wonderful ambience. We took the earliest reservation for lunch and the place wasn’t very busy. Despite that the service was slow though. We didn’t mind it as we were in no rush. Our waitress spoke poor English but she was a nice girl. We took some beer, an appetizer for two (platter with meat, cheese and veggie cuts), cabbage rolls to share (a must dish in Romania!!!) and papanasi for a dessert (basically donuts to put it simply). Good thing we were sharing everything because the dessert arrived on two plates. It was like two portions. First, we thought it’s a mistake, but it’s one standard portion. Our Romanian friends explained us later that those donuts are always served like that. Also, on the menu it mentions that it’s 420 gr. So just be aware :) I don’t have a sweet tooth but this was my favorite dish during our lunch. We sat upstairs. It was kind of private there, but don’t forget to make a reservation as the restaurant is known to be very popular and busy at all times.
