Good food, good service best chips in Zagreb! Reasonably priced too and will always make room for you. Recommend the grilled chicken with fries and vegetable rice

Looking for a restaurant to have diner close to the railway station and to the center we saw a kind of local restaurant full of people. After we looked around we came back to the Purger restaurant. It has been a tasty diner, nice people...where we enjoyed traditional dishes fully tasted. We’ll came back again. Thank you!More

Mid October, the chill is not yet in the air, but it won’t be long now. Autumn is in your nostrils and also nostalgia, or some vague longing for the comfort of a past that is either real or imaginary, or perhaps only what you...wish the past had been. You find yourself in Zagreb, a city in transition. Center town is not what it once was, globalization seeks all corners and this is no hiding place. Somehow you find a bar that gives you a real feel of home (it's actually called Home), you even make new friends there. Back out on the street, you wish that things could just be this way again. It’s hard to describe both the good vibe and the sense that the vibe is slipping away forever. Capitalism must destroy all of it, this is the way it will be. This tiny nation has no chance to hold it at bay.  You’re hungry. You walk, because in lovely Zagreb you pretty much always walk. There are plenty of choices for dinner, this city is loaded with great restaurants. On a lark, you hoof just a bit past the most tourist-friendly center of the center, past a couple dozen fine kitchens, to Gastonica Purger. Why did you stop here? You don’t really know, but you are drawn to the menu printed on a poster out on the street in front. The offerings draw you closer, familiar as they are. Now inside, you are no longer so sure about your choice: the lighting is too bright, the servers seem miserable in their short white sleeves and black vests. One of them is gulping shots every time he comes up to the bar. There are no cozy corners here. Then it dawns on you: this place is exactly what it wants to be, the same atmosphere you found before the war, in a country called Yugoslavia which may or may not be purely mythical. You’re sitting down in a commie restaurant. Every customer is older than you. There are tons of foreigners here, but not the sexy kind. A table of ten Hungarian workers sits next to you, starting off with pitchers or white wine and šlivovic. A lone Austrian tells you that he comes here for dinner every night when he’s in Zagreb. And he’s here a lot.  Everything on the menu is as you remembered from growing up. We opt for an appetizer of fried cheese with tartar sauce. How can such a thing be delicious? She orders a plate of ham (smoky, tender, with generous fat and for some reason no mustard offered), potatoes and sauerkraut. He gets duck and mlincime. How to describe these noodles? They’re fugly and all stuck together, swimming in the juices and fat of the duck or turkey they are served with. They are a testament to the culinary brilliance of these people, pure bliss, always upstaging the meat, so much better than they have a right to be. Heavenly fatty ugly mlincime. The duck is perfect with the noodles, a bit chewy on the outside, but tender and fatty and juicy when you bite into the generous chunks. As you eat, you blend into a Yugoslavia that exists only in memory. At the time, it seemed corny, these servers, this dining room. But now: are you weeping from the overwhelming nostalgia, or is the heavenly food and the buzz from several large glasses of beer?  There’s no possible way to put our bliss into words because it’s not simply about the food’s flavor, great as it is. The presentation is pedestrian. It all reminds you of American soul food. It might not look like much or garnish Michelin stars, the server might be a bit gruff in an old school way. You had no idea how much you needed this meal, this place. You are stoned, blissed out, and it’s far from merely a sensory experience. It's amazing, but it's mixed with melancholy and memory and the smell of autumn in the air. This dinner has taken you back to a place you didn’t realize that you were longing for.  Back on the street again, the October chill feels different. You are back in touch with whatever it was that you yearned for; it has not died yet apparently. You are comforted by this, and by the simple, honest food. You walk home, because you pretty much always walk in Zagreb, but content in a way that you didn't dare to hope for.More

I selecte Purger for dinner, and the choice was excellent: food was very, very good (I had country sausages with sauerkraut and potatoes), servings were big, service was outstanding, and prices were low. This was the very best restaurant I tried in Zagreb!

Here you can eat traditional Croatian dishes, like sarma. Food and service are bad. Štrukli didnt even look like štrukli, i wont even mention the taste. Service is slow, they forget two times at our order, waiter even rolled his eyes when i order coffee...after we closed the tab. Interior is from early 90s. We were sitting on the terrace that smelled like a toilet.More

I was recommended to visit Purger as a nice local place. I was intrigued to read in one of the reviews that the food there is 'as if your grandmother from Zagreb would cook it'. :) The staff is very experienced and forthcoming. For the...main courses, we ordered cevapcici and grilled squid, both were delicious. Hvala!More

This is a place where locals go. You will realize this when you find that the staff speaks little English. They make up for it, however, with an extensive menu in 4 languages. We were there with a guide who spoke Croatian, which helped. I...had stuffed sauerkraut- cabbage leaves prepared like sauerkraut (much mellower and less acidic than the US version) in a mild tomato sauce. Stuffs peppers were also an option. So was black sausage (made form cow's blood) if you're into that. My fellow tour members chose the weiner schnitzel- huge portions beautifully fried and puffy. You may want to share one portion- they cheerfully accommodate that at no extra charge. Since I've been totally off my diet on this trip I had ice cream for dessert. Wow- three flavors and SO rich. Highly recommended for a generous traditional meal.More
