Excelent food! Maybe the best we tried in Sofia! Maybe the place is not so nice, but you get compensated by the food and the nice owner! Very good prices too!

Ashurbanipal Is a tiny local restaurant with tremendous food which has amazing flavor. If you like the tourist scene a large smoky restaurant... don’t go here. But if you like great food and a small homestyle atmosphere this is a place you need to be....The food was bursting with flavor. There are about six tables with the owner outside working on the orders one other person in the small kitchen. The owner spoke great English and made some terrific recommendations our table was covered with plates of food it was all delicious.More

We visited this place couple days ago. We were 5 persons and we were lucky because the place is small. The owner, a very friendly person, does everything alone. So, when your dish is ready he calls you and you get it by yourself. Everything...we tried was very tasty, homemade. The red wine also good. He offered us some dishes for free and we are grateful. The only thing is that some portions are really small, not enough even for one person. The prices are ok.More

This gem in the "ladies' market" section of Sofia is a delight. Freddy, the owner/chef is as good with guests as he is with his dishes. The decorative ambience is a tad perfunctory, but the other diners having a great time, a good dinner, make...up for it.More

We had high expectations due to the many positive TA reviews & thankfully we were not disappointed! We arrived just after opening & there was only one other customer so when we initially ordered meatballs, we were told this wasn't ready. So we asked what...the other customer was eating & ordered it (cinnamon beef) plus a spinach & chickpea dish. Both dishes were ready quickly and you collect them from the counter, along with cutlery & extra plates if required. Both dishes were very tasty & although the beef didn't fall apart, it was very soft in a lovely tangy, spicy, rich cinnamon sauce.. which went very well with the packet of warm flatbread & salad provided! We also tried the red wine which although doesn't look appealing in the cardboard box, was actually not bad for 2.5 Lev! In total, lunch came to only 18.60 Lev for two. So we can't wait to come back to try other items for dinner! FYI this is a cash only place.More

Reading the reviews we were expecting a nice dinner. The worst of all was the attitude of the owner and staff - yelling at me form 10 meter "What do you want?" Then complaining about the quantity we ordered (i just like ordering in batched,...not to order excessively and then throw away food). The whole place is like a garage, it's completely self-service. Food was interesting in taste but nothing special. I would not go again for sure.More

This is a hidden gem in Sofia. Went here for lunch and the food is simply amazing. Had veal in curry sauce, kebab, chicken with spices, eggplant in tomato sauce and spinach with chickpeas. The salad and pita are on the house. The owner is...an amazing guy with a great heart. He told us about his life, about his cooking. He's really passionate and you can see this in the food. Tea was also great. Don't miss the place if you're in Sofia. Note: the place is open, but the door at the main entrance is closed most of the time. Be sure to check the door :)More

It happened to us too, we knocked and nothing happened. We were about to leave but then suddenly the door opened and Freddi welcomed us and invited us in!
