Surprising & delicious food - try the Banitsa !!

Arrived late into town and noticed Checkpoint Charlys as we looked for somewhere to eat, as a table was just leaving , we grabbed it on the outside terrace. Menus soon arrived and our order was taken, a tomato salad starter with moist buffalo mozzarella was delicious but not as good as the home made Banitsa ( cheese pie) there was a short 15 min wait but it was worth it, the cheese pie was the best I've ever tasted, a full meal in itself, it was awesome , really , really good Mains of chicken schnitzel served with roasted potato was perfect, crispy light chicken , the sausage plate was served with potato salad and peppers but after the amazing cheese (Banitsa) it was a little hard to finish everything even though it was all good . House wine was served in 500 cl carafe a reasonable 12 lv. Service was very good, English spoken, the inside rooms are homely , I did not enter the main part but I'm sure it would have been interesting. I left very full and content !

First off, the place is not that easy to find ( Found it by strolling around in an alley and the menu gave me an impression that it might be a good restaurant). The service is pretty decent and I like the homey feeling of the place. The food price is average and the portions are decent. I really enjoyed the food, it had this home cooked meal kind of taste and it was pretty good. I would suggest going there in the week for their lunch menus.

On holiday in Sofia, for a dinner with a friend we find this restaurant by chance. In summer it features an outdoor garden (veranda) with great attention to detail and a very peaceful environment, with pleasant jazz music in the background. The menu is extensive (too extensive) and the dishes we chose were really well made and well presented. The red wine offered by the glass is also good. The service very kind. I count well above the average for the place, but definitely acceptable when compared to a place of the same level in Italy. Recommended for a quiet dinner and/or as a couple.

Lovale found by chance while walking in the center. Above expectations. The environment was very nice and the food was simply delicious! A shared starter, two main courses and drinks for less than 25 euros each. Very kind waiters.

Tasteless food in a nice ambiance. The menu actually looked much better than the dishes tasted. As too often in Bulgaria, cooks seem to have lost their way to the salt and pepper jars.

Impressive and Emotional

Upon sitting on the table, you are handed a notebook with recommendation to “write what you remember about the communist times”. The place has lots and lots of books filled with pain, they keep them in baskets, on tables, on shelves, lots of memories, a lot of pain… They also have copies of the signs posted at Checkpoint Charlie when entering and leaving; the walls are covered with, you guessed it, memories and pictures of the dire times, hardly enticing you to eat, but good for drinks and talks… Please don’t tell me you don’t know what Checkpoint Charlie was...

Great place to visit in Sofia/ must book in advance. All portions were big, prices were good (on avg 25 euros pp including wine and deserts). Service was not slow, but it was not very friendly. I think it has to do with the Bulgarian culture and not rudeness itself. Loved the live jazz music in the background

Honest urban restaurant

In a cozy atmosphere, among others for fast but decent lunch,I was amazed for the varity of the menu as long as the dayily menu's inspiration. Good choice for plesant food expirience served by kind stuff into a cultural desinged place, in the heart of the city.

The food is very delicious. The service is at a high level. I would recommend the schnitzels - both pork and chicken - the best I have ever tried. However,the restaurant is a bit overpriced.

Attention - smoke inside

It uses to be one of my most favourite places in Sofia. Past tense. Last time, on a romantic dinner and someone was smoking just next to our table. Well, for the prices well above the average it should be completely forbidden. Commented it to the maître d'hôte and he said "thank you for the feedback but we can't do anything about it". Well, disappointing, a lot. Btw, the duck breast were overcooked.

Adhoc birthday lunch

We decided to pop in today for a birthday lunch. After an initial confusion about the entrance, we settled for the baked camembert cheese (MUST TRY!!!), the piquant sausages (delicious), the beans (love, love, love) and the chicken with mash for our daughter, who polished her plate. The mains were just as delicious: the duck and the juicy meatballs. The cream caramel and coffee were the perfect finish. Warning: the baked chilies with garlic are not to be underestimated! 🤣🤣🤣. The service was great. Thank you.

Loud, jumping, busy, fun

Checkpoint Charly was a bit hard to find, not much signage and the road in front was being torn up. But we did find it and we were happy. Food was great - we had shopska salad, kebabcheta, lamb meatballs, and piquant veal - all was delicious, expecially the lamb meatballs. There was too much food, we probably should have stopped after the appetizers. A large group of local teachers was celebrating the end of school and a jazz piano player was performing in the back. A fun night!

Great place with tasty food

My bf and I just had lunch there today. We each ordered a lunch special and tarator. The food got to the table quickly and was very tasty. The restaurant was cozy and the wait staff friendly.
