We ate in the bar area and were waited on by well-dressed elderly man who did not speak English [that is fine] and did not want to put up with us taking the time to decipher the menu with a smart phone and dictionary. He...stood nearby waiting for us to decide – quite rude. Having said that, the Spanish tortilla was very good, the fish dish was average.More

Bar Union is like entering the Tardis and emerging in 1950. A dark, atmospheric place, full of strange unlit corners, heavy furniture, moody ambiance and unchanging values, it's where the ageing metropolitan elite meet the politicians, where the business chiefs do their quiet little deals...and where - often to their discomfort - tourists sometimes wander in and wonder why. It depends entirely on whether you like the feel of old spy books, the dustiness of antiquity and enjoying a beer in a place that hasn't altered in a century. If you do, you'll love it. You'll want to spend longer and longer here. If you don't, try McDonald's.More

As other reviewers have done, went here after a recommendation from the free tour guide. Menu was a bit intimidating but between a bit of pointing at other dishes we ordered the dish of the day for 3750 CLP, which was a soul followed by...chicken and rice. Home style but I could never make it quite the same. Kids were tired and just wanted hot chips, which were available. Because they didn't want the chicken that usually comes with the chips, the waiter brought double serves- they couldn't finish it all. Pisco sour was small but good. Bread basket so yummy, love a good bread basket. Five people ate for 35000 CLP including drinks and tips so felt like an ok meal. Atmosphere is classic, fees like the movers and shakers could be making deals over lunch or dinner. Waiters are proper 'career' waiters, all older gentlemen with no hipster beards in sight.More

An interesting place to stop and eat - designed to mock the exclusivity of the members club opposite. My Spanish is non existent, however, staff were great at helping.

Bar La Union captures the soul of Santiago in a way. It is full of the buss of business and politics at lunch time with plenty of local luminarties dscussing the afffairs of state and finance. The meals are consistently good - Chilean comfort food...in a busy, hectic atmosphere but thast is part of the charm. A visit here will give you a flavor of Santiago society.More

So the story of this bar is pretty cool, it is established right opposite the club Union, an exclusive club for rich and upperclass gentlemen, in a way to mock its exclusivity. This bar is almost as old as the club itself.

Went after a recommendation from the Free Tour earlier in the day which had positioned this place as an authentic bar/restaurant. Indeed it was in a time warp and had a good early evening atmosphere with locals from work. Greeted warmly by a nice waiter...in white we had a couple of the Pisco Sours which were very good and then it all went pair shaped. I must take some of the blame as I cannot speak Spanish. So when a beer came with WITHOUT alcohol, I knew it was not going to be a good night.... We ordered from the fairly extensive menu that in reality only offered limited choice. With a bit a of help I ordered pork and my wife a beef dish...... My pork a real off cut full of belly, poorly cooked with terrible fatty chip things. My wife faired little better with a beef covered "thing" which contained ham and egg, equally not good with fat served with potatoe - ie chips. We paid our 22,000 PSOs and beat a hasty retreat. Sadly not a good experience and whilst I accept it was my fault for not knowing what I was ordering, it wasn't when you look at what was actually served. So my TA advice is to go for a bottle of red, sit in the bar and then go elsewhere for food after you have soaked up the atmosphere.More

The unassuming front and lack of major signage keeps this local place low-key, and many visitors pass it by. Inside, it is a brilliant and very down-to-earth cafeteria-style place. Food is basic - I tried the meat sandwich. The meat of the day was hot...sliced roast pork with "italiano topping (sliced tomato, mayonnaise and avocado - so called because they are the colours of the Italian flag). Absolutely delicious. With a Pisco Sour it came to about 3000CLP which was a bargain. Soak up the local atmosphere here. Make sure you can speak basic Spanish. I was the only traveller in there which made it even nicer.More

Was recommended this from our tour guide. Really cool old funky place. Best of all this is not a touristy place. This seems like a authentic local hang out. Just had drinks here not a meal, worth a visit if you want to get away...from the touristy areas.More

Shame the food isn't better as the place itself is a trip back in time. Old fuddly waiters, not very tasty food but worth a visit. One of the few places in santiago you'll see people standing at the bar drinking. Drop in, have a...borgoño, seep in this unique atmosphere.More
