Food and ambience

African, Cafe, International, Vegetarian Friendly, Vegan Options
Singapore's first African themed cafe and lounge taking up all three floors of a shop house in the gorgeous Keong Saik area. UTU is a cosy refuge away from the hustle bustle of everyday life. Our award winning Baristas serve our house blend, named “Ubuntu”, a blend of beans from Uganda, Mexico and Brazil . You can expect a rich buttery texture with hints of cashew nuts & brown sugar, subtle notes of red wine, caramelised apricot acidity and an intense dark chocolate finish. We believe that for a coffee to be great, you have to use not only great beans but also great milk! We exclusively use Hokkaido Milk, extra creamy, extra wonderful. UTU serves up a full brunch menu as well as authentic dishes

Kept coming back and trying more dishes. This time we had 1)salad with grilled chicken. The pomelo and kaffir leaves made this dish so refreshing 2) lamb samosas. The well marinated spices in the samosas gave these a kick! 3) for mains we had -...Moroccan Lemon Chicken Tagine which contained Marinated Chicken, Olives, Saffron, Charred Onions, Quinoa, House Pickled Lemon. Served with Quinoa 4) Swahili Fish Curry which is a favourite in this place. Made up of Red Snapper, Tamarind, Coconut Milk, House Curry Paste & Habanero. Served with Coconut Rice 5) carrot cake- so moist! Wow. All in a great place to introduce your friends to . Great service from Joma and Jonathan!More

A nice homely cafe tucked away in the heart of Singapore. However, parking might be a little tricky on the weekends. All in all a very nice experience. Nigerian Fiery Peppered Pork Stew A very feisty dish which reminds us of a woman’s temper. After...two mouthfuls, our entire mouth was on fire. Consists of black Angus pork belly, charred peppers, habanero and smoked fish accompanied by coconut rice and a mango salsa. Despite being capable of turning our mouths into a flame thrower, it was actually quite tasty and the mango salsa was an absolute life saver as it does take the edge off some of the heat. Curried Avocado with Raw Garlic Toast A pretty refreshing dish consisting of fresh avocados, red curry paste, raw garlic nicely rested on sourdough toast and sprinkled with cassava chips, & arugula. To be honest, at this point we could not taste much due to the heat originating from the forest fire in our mouth caused by the stew. But it did a great job in taking away some of the heat and had a refreshing touch to it. Our full review is on Instagram (@monk3yseendo)More

Love this little gem. Been there twice and the food didn’t disappoint. The fried chicken, goat curry and the fish curry are just delicious. The lounge upstairs is so warm and sets a perfect ambiance for a group of friends or a date night. The...staff although quite busy are friendly and do their best to be attentive.More

Hands down one of the most characterful, pleasant, and interesting cafes I have ever been to in Singapore. Perfect home in Keong Saik, the cultural epicentre of Singapore, with all the interesting shophouses. The way the cafe is curated, and the depth of its design...ethos right from the cutlery you use, to the motifs on the walls, has really won my heart over. Seriously, even the toilets are super nicely curated, and smell great too. Real A+ effort for everything! While you are having an eye-gasm at Kafe UTU, you will be attended to by staff who are passionate about delivering a splendid dining experience – with nothing less than a genuine smile. I would like to specially mention Kynna, the marketing/ops manager at the area, for her high level of hospitality. At bespoke places, I am always interested in the food offering. I was given a great recommendation for the UTU breakfast, which was an eclectic blend of African flavours, with an Asian fringe. Big thumbs up to Kynna and her team; I see many smiling faces at Kafe UTU itself too! Overall, a MUST VISIT for anyone who appreciates fine touch at a dining establishment. You will find yourself going for repeat visits just because the vibes are perfect. A 5-star review for this one is really a no-brainer.More

I came in with high hopes and was nothing but disappointed. The space itself is nice but I was seated at a bar where there were dishes being done one foot away from me for the duration of my meal. I understand dishes need to...be washed but for the price of the food here you shouldn’t feel like you are eating in a kitchen. The food was well seasoned but the veggies in my veggie stew were not even cooked. I had to ask for a sharper knife to cut through them. This shows me that the food was as rushed as the service It is such a lovely area and there are many places nearby that I would recommend before going here If you want to go to take photos in the space that’s fine but for a quality comfortable meal this isn’t the placeMore

We (2 plus Baby) made our way to Utu for lunch. We knew there are no reservations possible which I find very arrogant but well, we really wanted to try the food. We were told waiting time is about 30 min and we will get...a message or call. No call after 30 plus minutes so we went back and checked and were told that there is a table for us now. BUT the table is upstairs. How were we supposed to carry the pram 15+ steps up a narrow staircase???? And yes she saw the pram when we asked to be waitlisted for the next table. Would have appreciated if we were just told that this is a very child unfriendly restaurant.More

One of my favourite bars- not too commercialised, small, quaint.. had wonderful service from staff member, Jonathan and bar manager, Joma . , serving up tasty cocktails. Lamb samosas are delicious! Went well with the cocktails! Tried the angry B*tch cocktail this time.

Was a little upset, at first, with the “will not seat till the whole party arrives” rule. But this place is worth all the rules, and the waiting to get in. The food is delicious and very unique. Started with the peppers and lamb samosa....For mains we did the pork belly and the Swahili fish curry. The mains were better than the appetizer, if you have to choose, but all in all great evening. The good service added to the experienceMore

Went to check this restaurant out based on many great reviews. Ambience was chiilax, friendly service staff and also delectable selection of food. If only more of us were there we'll order more to try. What we tried today for lunch was tasty and satisfying....The cauliflower starter, breakfast and Swahili fish with rice were good enough to make us want to return to try the others. The spiced latte had unique taste that's not overpowering (think masala tea). Reasonably priced too. Worth a try!More

Came here for dinner with friends they do not take reservations as my friends have not arrived they could only seat us when everyone in our party have arrived. We waited for an hour or so till it was our turn. The food and service...was great the food had a fresh taste unlike any other I have tried before. I especially love the peanut butter chicken and the desert. Will visit again!More
