Based on recommendations we went here to have Peking Duck, but unfortunately I was rather disappointed. I have had Peking duck in one of the best Beijing restaurants, and this didn't even come close. The place is worn, the staff ancient, and they stood staring at us while we ate, blatantly laughing at our bad stick-eating skills. There are a... More

This restaurant has a famous reputation in Hong Kong. It has been serving up Peking duck and other classic chinese dishes for many years. However, we never order the duck here preferring to sample the many other good, freshly cooked dishes on the extensive menu. The larger your group the better the dining experience as you will be able to... More

I was hungry and tired after arriving in Hong Kong after an exhausting drive from the north side of Shenzhen. I found the American Restaurant and I thought it might be yet another burger bar but it’s actually a very smart Chinese restaurant. I am passionate about good Dim Sum and they didn’t disappoint. 12 pieces of the most delicious... More

First, let me admit to two bits of bias. First, I lived in Hong Kong and used to frequent this place. Second, I am more a fan of this style of Chinese cuisine than the classic Cantonese style. I love this restaurant. They offer an authentic experience for both locals and tourists. Yes, as people note, it could well be... More

This is a beijing restaurant where u could hv peking duck, roasted salty spring chicken, dumplings etc. as stated from other reviewers, do not expect to have good service here. old style restaurant with no particular good service or good food. Price is reasonable though. Not a must try if u want beijing dishes.

We ate here to see if it had changed over 30 years - evidently not, many favourites still on the vast menu. Not American food, but traditional "colonial" Chinese; Peking duck, sweet and sour pork, chicken with noodles, chilli beef. The service was hit and miss; our waiter was surly and downright rude, but we ignored his attempts to order... More

This place has to be one of the finest restaurants in the world. It matters not what dish you order, if you love Chinese food,it will have you mouth watering. Ok so the toilets don't quite match up to those at the Peninsula Hotel, but the atmosphere is enchanting and the aromas are exotic. Don't forget to make a booking,... More

Like so many reviewers, have been coming here for 20+ years. As with many destination places, the reality can be something of a shock, but I still head here at least twice per year. The good: atmosphere, salt/pepper prawn toast, fried rice, sweet and sour fish, chicken with cashews. The bad: have never had a good duck pancake here, most... More

Having lived in HK twenty years ago, we were anxiously looking forward revisiting the American. Among our favorite dishes was the Dried Chili Beef with Sesame pockets. On our visit, it appeared the waiters were the same ones working at the restaurant 20 years ago. And the beef didn't live up to our memories and the sesame pockets were pretty... More

Our hotel manager kindly booked us a table here in his name as we were really wanting to eat peking duck. When we got here we felt like we had hit the jackpot with an amazing local haunt. The dated decor, noisy floor, dirty plates, 80's feel, ignorant staff, packed in locals and difficult and confusing menus all meant we... More

Staying in Wan Chai / Causeway Bay

Neighborhood Profile
Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centers of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.
