We ate here to see if it had changed over 30 years - evidently not, many favourites still on the vast menu. Not American food, but traditional "colonial" Chinese; Peking duck, sweet and sour pork, chicken with noodles, chilli beef. The service was hit and miss; our waiter was surly and downright rude, but we ignored his attempts to order... More

This place has to be one of the finest restaurants in the world. It matters not what dish you order, if you love Chinese food,it will have you mouth watering. Ok so the toilets don't quite match up to those at the Peninsula Hotel, but the atmosphere is enchanting and the aromas are exotic. Don't forget to make a booking,... More

Like so many reviewers, have been coming here for 20+ years. As with many destination places, the reality can be something of a shock, but I still head here at least twice per year. The good: atmosphere, salt/pepper prawn toast, fried rice, sweet and sour fish, chicken with cashews. The bad: have never had a good duck pancake here, most... More

Having lived in HK twenty years ago, we were anxiously looking forward revisiting the American. Among our favorite dishes was the Dried Chili Beef with Sesame pockets. On our visit, it appeared the waiters were the same ones working at the restaurant 20 years ago. And the beef didn't live up to our memories and the sesame pockets were pretty... More

Our hotel manager kindly booked us a table here in his name as we were really wanting to eat peking duck. When we got here we felt like we had hit the jackpot with an amazing local haunt. The dated decor, noisy floor, dirty plates, 80's feel, ignorant staff, packed in locals and difficult and confusing menus all meant we... More

I dragged my wife back here so that I could re live childhood memories, and i am so glad that I did , the menu thankfully has not changed a bit , crab meat and sweet corn soup, sizzling beef, chicken with cashews, special fried rice followed by toffee apples and washed down with a few bottles of Tsingtao, perfect... Peking duck was very average, not bad but also not good. "Free" starters that we received before ordering were not free at all. It appeared on the bill with $8. Other food was okay, but absolutely nothing special. The service was terrible. Simply put, you can get better food and service for your money. Stay away.

Everyone should eat at The American once in their lives. The decor is ... interesting. The service is sometimes offhand, sometimes charming, sometimes even a bit rude, and that's all part of it. But the food, the food! Shredded beef in sesame pockets is legendary, pigeon good, broccoli in garlic - it goes on. You won't just go there once.... More

The restaurant is Chinese restaurant with tires decor. The food was delicious. I didn't order the dishes so my recollection of what we ate is poor. We had duck, eggplant, prawns and a dish which involved stuffing bread rolls with a beef stir fry that was to die for. I'd go back in a flash!

Went for a quick dinner, the staff are elderly gentlemen and even though there was a language barrier our waiter was able to provide us with help in choosing some of their more popular dishes, their fried dumplings were spectacular, the sweet and sour pork was really really good but the King Prawns in chilli was something to remember. Staff... More

Staying in Wan Chai / Causeway Bay

Neighborhood Profile
Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centers of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.
