Having recently relocated from Moon Street to the adjacent Sun Street, the "new" Plaza Mayor is smaller than its predecessor. But rather than detract from the new restaurant's appeal, the smaller environment has arguably enhanced it, creating a cosy and vibrant atmosphere. On the evening...that we went, the restaurant kept the doors facing Sun Street opened, which is a nice touch, and despite the warm weather outside, the restaurant remains comfortably cool due to the aircon. (I would imagine that the open-door policy would be a big plus as we enter the cooler Oct-Nov months, probably the best time to dine al fresco in HK.) For starters, we opted for a selection of tapas: chorizo; padron peppers; prawns in garlic; mushroom/spinach croquetas; and anchovies. All were very good. For mains, we shared the chicken paella 🥘, which was perfectly cooked and excellent. The wine list, which not surprisingly leans heavily towards Spanish offerings, has a number of good whites and reds. The genial owner, Martino, was on hand to recommend a very good, yet affordable, rioja for us. Our bill - which also included a large bottle of sparkling water, a glass of white wine and a vodka martini - came to ~USD230 (~HK$1800), equivalent to USD57 per head. A most enjoyable evening.More
