An American friend who lives in Shanghai recommended we eat at the Black Sesame Kitchen during our visit to Beijing because he said it was the highlight of his dining experience. Couldn’t agree more. Situated in the authentic hutongs of central Beijing within walking distance...of the east gate of Jingshan Park, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. In addition to the cool atmosphere, we were personally greeted and served by our two lovely female Chinese chefs for the night, learned how to roll dumplings, had great wine, beer and conversation with Jen the owner, and ate way too much of an amazing 10 course meal. We will definitely be back next time we are in Beijing and hope to take part in the cooking classes too.More

We had a party of 13 and great seats in the kitchen. The Hutong setting is really pretty (although they seriously need to invest in some a/c). The servers and chefs were very nice and friendly. The food was amazing and there were 10 or...11 courses. Each was delicious except the mapo tofu which was a little disappointing. On the other hand, the fried mushrooms were amazing!! We had a great time and would definitely go back again.More

We had a birthday party celebrated in this place with a couple of Spanish friends. The food was amazing , best eggplant ever. We also made dumpling before the dinner and had lots of fun with it. BUT be aware that "free flow vine" is...actually only 2 glasses per person. And food (how amazing it was) is rather less ...so don't come too hungry because u will not be full. Other than that we had a wonderful time with a cosy atmosphere.More

Great online cooking class, allowed participants to see how to cook, slice, measure ingredients. I'm not an experienced cook but this class made it easy to make some of the most tasty Chinese dishes that don't take a lot of time and were delicious. Sign...me up for the next one!!!More

Shortly after Jen Lin -Liu's book "Serve the People" was published , I had the opportunity to visit Black Sesame Kitchen in Beijing with my family for a cooking class. The hands on experience was extraordinary and dinner was delicious. With the Corona virus limitations,...Jen has begun an online Zoom cooking class in which I participated last week. Watching the preparation and cooking along, if you wish , was fun and the dishes were ones you would not typically think to search for in a traditional Chinese cookbook. If in Beijing, schedule class and dinner for an experience you will long remember.More

Wonderfull cooking classes, I’ve learned so much about the simple process that needs to be followed for restaurant-like stir fry veggies and the other vegetarian dishes we made were scrumptious as well!

I had the joy of participating in a new offering from Black Sesame Kitchen last weekend: A livestream cooking class with founder Jen Lin-Liu. The recipes used ingredients most of us have on hand (even during quarantine) and the instruction was clear and simple. The...food was delicious. Even after living in China for a number of years, I learned a few things about technique that I look forward to applying beyond these recipes. The vibe was relaxed, and everyone got to participate and share their own experiences, questions and "results" via Zoom, with an option to have a sit-down virtual meal together at the end. Great fun. Thank you, BSK, for keeping the love and good eats alive in creative ways!More

One of the best meals we had in Beijing. Amazing crew with perfect English skills (not to common in tho area). We loved the food, the stories, the hospitality and all the the knowledge they gladly shared. There is no way to get closer to...history, ancient cooking and deep down to the Chinese culture. We loved it!More

This is a lovely communal dinner where you will meet other travellers and sit at a long table and have lovely Chinese food. I would recommend it for your first night in Beijing. It’s in a Hutong so you’ll experience that but mostly you’ll meet...other travellers who can give you tips on where to go and what to see while you’re in Beijing. good food and a wonderful communal night. We enjoyed it a lot. For ¥350 each we got 10 courses and they included wine so not too bad.More

There are tourists but it's no trap. Also plenty of long-term residents of Beijing from elsewhere who have learned that this is the best meal in town.
