We visited The Schoolhouse as part of a group trip after our walk on the Great Wall, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I always rate a restaurant by whether or not I would buy their shirt if they had one, and I would have bought the polo shirt if they could have found it quickly before we needed to leave.

Dear LPinFL, Glad to know you enjoyed and would have bought a shirt! We do have them in stock and there's really no excuse we couldn't get one to you in time. Will you please send me a private message with your size and your address and I'll have a shirt expressed to you at no charge -- we need... More

I only have amazing things to say at this place. I only regret for not staying longer. I booked it for only one night and went back to Beijing the next day after hiking at the Mutianyu section. The staff is friendly, the rooms are rudimentary with huge windows facing the Great Wall. The food is also very good (and... More

The schoolhouse is a very cute little spot to stop at, but I've been disappointed several times. Despite the fact that we plan visiting ahead of time (you have to, if you are purchasing a vehicle pass through them to go to Mutianyu...at least the day before), the staff on every occasion seemed to just be arriving, and we waited... Dear TravelingChens, Our restaurant is currently only open for groups by advance reservation due to local traffic restrictions. We suggest a la carte guests dine at our sister property, the Brickyard Retreat, in nearby Beigou Village. Thank you, Jim Spear, Partner More

I loved this restaurant. It was far enough away from the tourist traps of mutianyu and had a great selection of local fare and western food. Grab a beer relax in the surroundings of this beautiful building and friendly service.

You can see people working and teaching others, which is very nice! You can find mementos and take a rest after the Great Wall.

The Schoolhouse at Brickyard at the Great Wall is located a short drive from the Mutianyu entrance. All the old farmhouse buildings are restored and there is a small restaurant overlooking the garden. We were booked for a set lunch menu and could choose from 2 starters, 3 mains and there was some dessert and coffee/tea afterwards. Starter choice was... More

A pleasant enough setting and we both had the set lunch(no choice in the matter) it was a nice place. A little noisy on day we went with both a private event and some loud american fellow diners. Had to wait a while for the service too.

Nice location, good service, OK food. I was disappointed at the lunch here. I didn't think it was good value and the dining room was quite cold. I had arranged this in advance but didn't get what I thought I'd arranged for myself and my friends. However, I enjoyed the location and the service was good.

Whenever I go to the wall, I always stop here. The food is quite decent, and the arts and crafts are quite nice. Service is usually pretty friendly.

Description
The Schoolhouse is based on an abandoned village school and is part of a sustainable tourism business founded by Jim Spear & Liang Tang, longtime expat residents of Mutianyu, in 2006. We offer local foods made fresh from scratch to groups of 12 to 144 people with family or buffet style menus. Advance booking is required. The operating season each year is early March to November, closed for winter vacation. Individual guests and small parties are welcome to book a table at the intimate lodge cafe in our nearby hotel, the Brickyard at Mutianyu, which is open year-round. The Brickyard is a long-running Travelers Choice winner based on a repurposed glazed tile factory and includes extensive gardens. The outdoor terrace offering spectacular views of the Great Wall is open for dining in clement weather. The Brickyard can also serve groups of 12 to 144 people on the premises year-round by prior booking. We also operate a nearby noodle shop called Xiaolumian open for groups of 12 to 36 people from early March to October by prior booking. The noodle shop is also open on weekends and holidays 12:00-16:00 from April to October to individual guests and small groups.
