Really enjoyed our experience during our trip to Seoul! We were seated in a private room, which was quiet and very comfortable. Mr. Han and the other staff were very accommodating and provided detailed descriptions of the food and its history as we enjoyed the...set menu. Would definitely recommend coming to Jihwaja for both the food and the cultural experience!More

Korean Cuisine is always a cultural journey but what is amazing is how the restaurant has been awarded with National Intangible Cultural Heritage No 38. with 3 successions of master. A true blue Korean Royal Cuisine, that is Jihwaja. My husband and I had decided...to gave ourselves a treat to a royal feast that was such a memorable birthday celebration that we will never forget. An experience of royalty, excellent execution of food cum excellent service. Mr Han has been very patiently sharing each dishes and the history behind it. The journey through the meals was paired nicely with their Makgeolli and 黄酒 (direct translation yellow wine) that has a hint of plum (ume). Each dish has been prepared with great pride and intricacy. The balance of ying and yang that is coupled with nutritional ingredients from the herbs and flavor. We both had a full belly when we left the restaurant. I understand from Mr Han, the master still comes into the restaurant to ensure the quality of the food is maintained. I have to say they have been fantastic. Food that I love in the deluxe course : the beef Tartar, the platter of nine delicacies, meat skewer, braised abalone and sea cucumber, I love the abalone porridge and dessert. The rest were excellent but this was my personal favorite. What was more amazing was their service. They have been very attentive and detailed to ensure we had a great meal and experience. But what follows was beyond my expectation. My husband had erroneously left his credit card behind. Mr Han and staff had tried multiple ways to locate us and finally manage to get to us via the hotel. Mr Han had personally drove to the bar the same evening to pass the card back to my husband. I had only experienced this 5 star service on one of the trips in Japan. But this is my second and I have to say they deserved more than 5 stars. What a great experience and wonderful hospitality. Some of the starred restaurant may not be able to deliver the same kind of passion that Jihwaja have. It is not only the food, experience, service but the heart to the stomach was through their heart of serving and making the guest felt truly honor.More

I was celebrating my birthday and my daughter's birthday there at the end of December. I not only enjoyed the true authentic Royal Cuisine but also deeply experienced Korean culture. They successfully combined the food with art and culture. The restaurant's history and how dedicated...and determined the owner and his Mom were to preserve Korean culture through food really inspired me and my daughter. We were not only able to have some of the finest food we've had in Korea but it was a profound and priceless learning experience we will never forget. The staff and the owner treated us like family members. It was a beautiful journey. No doubt, we had an unforgettable night in the restaurant. I am planning to visit the restaurant every time we visit Seoul.More

If you want to experience genuine Korean traditional cuisine that only the Joseon royal families had the exclusive right to dine in, come on down to Jihwaja.   One of the very FEW places that can pride themselves on having the recipe and know-how which were...passed down from the royal chefs. Most “traditional” restaurants, often bombard you with different variety of side dishes that are often left untouched and, worst of all, lessen appreciation for each unique side dish. However, Jihwaja only serves dishes best represent Korean culture—they want you to taste the Korean art of cooking.  All of the dishes were simply amazing and I would gladly bring my Canadian friends over for dinner and more. I could taste each unique flavor of the ingredients and, at the same time, a whole set of different sensations to my pallet. One of the memorable dishes was a Korean red bean soup. I have always hated the taste and texture but thanks to Jihwaja my dislike towards red bean soup has somewhat changed and I am willing to give ita second chance. But I have a feeling that I will have a hard time finding a place that does it just right. Moreover, their staff is very perspective and cut-above from your run-of-the-mill waiters. They bring in the next food at the precise moment when the last shred of taste from the previous dish fades away.  This further allows you to enjoy the whole cuisine without any moments of interruptions.  And finally, as for their dessert, if you like Millefeuille, a multi-layeredFrench pastry, you will certainly enjoy Yagkwa(약과). They have employed a pastry technique called Feuilletage and you can clearly see each layer within the sweet. The only problem is that it is somewhat small but I can certainly promise you that their dessert will definitely give you a delighted conclusion to your meal.   More

One of my most favorite dining experiences ever. I’ve frequented quite a number of Michelin-starred restaurants, and although Jihwaja technically isn’t starred, I’d rank them up there with the best of the best. The attention to detail is superb. Let’s start with the food. The...freshness and quality of the ingredients, the presentation, even the order that the courses come out in are well-thought out. Each course is accompanied by a wonderful explanation and a small historical anecdote of the dish. The portions are of tasting menu size, and by the end of dinner we were absolutely stuffed. We took approximately 3 hours to finish dining at our leisurely pace. The food was extremely delicious, and had a lightness about it that didn’t make me feel bloated, even after I had eaten all the courses. Moving onto the staff. Mr. Han was the absolute best, so knowledgeable and personable. He really elevated our dining experience to the next level. He even brought out one of the junior chefs for us to meet after we complemented a dish. The pride that he takes in the Royal Cuisine really shows, and Jihwaja proves that it is most definitely a point to be proud of. Thanks to Mr. Han, we truly had an unforgettable night. I would highly recommend Jihwaja to anyone who enjoys fine dining.More

I was first impressed with the promptness and attention to detail during the reservation process. I got a reply on the very same day. It was very thoughtful of the restaurant to prepare a rose and personalised card for my mother's birthday. When we arrived,...there was an effort to strategise the seating arrangements for all the guests in the restaurant so thatwe had our own privacy and space without being too close to the other diners. During the dinner, the ingredients used were very fresh, especially in the first few dishes where raw vegetables and fruits were used. There was an explosion of flavours and different textures from the various ingredients which complemented each other well. They also managed to modify the dishes to cater to our needs without comprising on the flavours presented.  The entire dinner experience was enhanced by the detailed explanation given for each course. It was very informative and I have learnt interesting facts about the dining habits of the King.  The pace of the dinner service was also just nice without much lag time inbetween courses and neither was it rushed. We started about 6.30pm and finished around 9pm. Was wondering how they would pace the course as my menu had 11 course and my mum's had more dishes. But they did it well e.g. combined 2 of my mom's course into 1 without making it awkward. There were some minor misses e.g. the beef was slightly too well cooked for our liking/preference and the sauce for abalone dish was slightly too favourable we could not enjoy the freshness of the abalone. However, these are just some really minor issues. Was reading some of the negative reviews and I think it's important to understand that this is a fine dining restaurant and experience I.e. portions will be small (degustation menu) and service may seem slower between courses if you just gobble up the ("small") portions without taking time to appreciate the presentation. We spent 315 000 won for 2 menus (195 000 and 12 000) and it was definitely worth every cent for an overall exquisite dining experience. So, do give this restaurant a try if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply wanting to have some good food/service/dining experience.More

After a long walk with our hanbok, my fiancee and I decided to eat at this restaurant upon the recommendation of my friend who once ate at this restaurant. Its just 10 mins away from the palace. When we got to the restaurant they gave...us hot towel, and theres also a brochure telling the history of the restaurant. The price was a bit expensive but I wasn't disappointed because I just eat what I paid for. I forgot the name of our order since its in korean name, but it comes with chicken soup with mushroom, and also my favorite dumplings! The food is so delicious and people of the restaurant is very accommodating. The old guy who might be the owner or manager of the restaurant roams around to talk personally to the guest and explain some of the dishes. It was so nice of him to do it. Also I felt at home at this restaurant because they all speak English. The restaurant was a bit full when we dine in but that didn't stop them from making everyone feel welcomed specially one of the server whose very good in english. She's so charming and energetic, i love her! Everytime she goes to our table her smile is so relaxing and I really enjoyed talking to her. I don't think shes korean by the looks but I can hear from the other table that she also speaks korean, so amazing. This restaurant is a full package! We had a lovely lunch for two at this historic restaurant that was thoroughly enjoyable. We had the simple lunch fixed price menu (relatively speaking) that included two soups, a vegetable dish, a noodle dish, braised short ribs, rice with various side dishes and dessert....It was an amazing dining experience given the mixture of delicate tastes and textures. It was relatively mild by Korean standards but unique in terms of the complexity of the flavors. The service was excellent and despite having a large number of dishes, the meal was completed in a reasonable amount of time.
