We went to this place yesterday evening. Once we entered the place our table was already decorated full of Meze's. It is a good thing that you feel "invited". However, there were some Meze's that we don't want to eat but anyway they take them...if you. The warm meals are mainly from offals but kebaps are also there. The ambiance is ok but place is too small and the tables are too close to each other. The only bad thing here is the WC where there is only one and you have to wait quite long. The prices are reasonable, indeed cheaper than the other similar kind of restaurants. The food quality was good. The service was also good. The personal was very friendly and they made a kind reduction in the bill which is really very kind behavior. The place is definitely advisory!More

Good range of starter plates ( the best humous we tasted) and very good grills. As other people have commented do try the grilled liver, really good. No concept of gluten free unfortunately and as they do not serve rice or potatoes my wife missed...out on Carbs. Also we were charged for a dish we did not have, so not a perfect experience but the good food makes this a very popular place worth tryingMore

It is nice atmosphere of "meyhane" at Kadikoy. There are few places all tables full at wednesday in Istanbul. Cold and hot ppetizers are tasty and more than 30 kinds and liver is best. Turkish raki is main drink at "meyhane" also wines are available....You can finish your meal with pumpkin desert. 200 cc "yesil efe" together with cold and hot appetizers cost 35€(140 TL) slightly higher prices $$ without main dishes. If you want to feel "meyhane"atmosphere , that is right place to drink and eat between elegant, polite people .More

I go there time to time with friends. It is one of the best old-school "meyhane"s in Istanbul. The ones in touristic areas like "nevizade" are not my type. They are usually quite noisy with some musicians trying to rip you with the noisy instruments....Birtat is not like that. They serve traditional mezes with raki. Their fried liver (arnavut ciğeri) is the best I ever tested. Their prices are bit high but they deserve it I believe.More

The place is pleasant in itself but it is too expensive for what it offers. The food is mediocre and you do not receive value for money.

first of all i should tell that there are two branches of this restaurant. one of them is in Kadıköy of which address is written above. the other one (and in my opinion the better one) is located in Koşuyolu (a local neighbourhood which is...not far from kadıköy and very easy to reach). the full address is: Koşuyolu Mahallesi, Kalfa Çeşmesi Sokak, 16, Kadıköy. As i see fram other reviews, people complain about not to be able to communicate with waiters. unfortunately this is true because they are purely local. Birtat is a local restaurant that serves mezze (little turkish tapas) and meat dishes mainly. You should drink Rakı here. I recommend "Tekirdağ Rakı". and start with mezzes. try "topik" (alike with humus). Then I recommend everyone (even the first timers) to try "ciğer" which is liver of lamb. Birtat is famous for its ciğer. this is by far the best of the town. second, you should also try "adana- bıçak arası". approximately you pay around hundred TL (30 euros) per person.More

After having read the review from Shai S we decided we had to eat here. Although the wait staff were accommodating and friendly, we were unable to speak a common word - and four languages were spoken at our table - we could not communicate...what we wanted to drink, or request a side of rice. The mezes were average at best - we left two unfinished and the hummus we make at home is significantly better. The mains from the grill are what you would expect. Overall, we had an average meal.More

This was my second visit to Birtat and it did not disappoint for sure. Truly a great find, Birtat is an old meyhanesi on the Asian side of Istanbul which does some absolutely fabulous mezzes. Their pepper dip, fried liver, lahmacuns are absolutely a delight...to devour. Usually filled with locals, this is tucked away from the madding crowds on the main square and main street.More

Established in 1956 it is considered the oldest traditional , authehtic, family owned Lokantasi/ Turkish grill restaurant in Kadikoy and , believe me, you will not find a better place to sample the most delicious local food anywhere on the Asian side. As soon as...you sit down you are presented with a large silver tray of starter/appetizers to choose from..what they call "mezeh" (Meh Zay). The treats range from stuffed grape leaves with rice and roasted nuts and herbs, or eggplant dishes, zuccini, tomatoes and feta, humus, fresh bread and olive oil with minted pesto or pomegranate balsamico. You could really make a meal from just the starters. But then there is the grill..lamb, chicken, beef, kofte, shish (kababs) all done over a large charcoal and olive wood fire that lends an unbelievably sweet smoky flavor to the perfectly bbq-ed meat, served steaming on your plate with veg , rice or potatoes. And they have excellent house red or white wine to cleanse the palate and enhance the experience. Yes..they also serve (chilled) Raki and ice-cold beer. And the service is friendly. Try to save room for the dessert, made fresh and quite plentiful..puddings, fruit plates, chocolate cake..so I do mean ..save room! Best of all, it will not break your budget...Highly recommended for couples, friends, family lunches. As the locals say "Cok Guzel". (Afeyet Olsun!)More
