It was a bit of a walk to get to Asitane Restaurant, but too many people had recommended this place as one of the few spots were you could sample authentic Ottoman cuisine dating back to the 1500’s. Set in a secluded and leafy courtyard this restaurant offers a beautiful location and excellent service. We tried the Vine Leaves stuffed... More

We went there because my daughter is interested in ottoman history and she had seen this restaurant presented on a cooking travel show. The waiters and ambience was nice we were given complimentary sherbet, and bread with a walnut paste. The food was okay and small portions , it was a good experience.

The food was wonderful and the restaurant provided history of the recipes. Service was very courteous and before leaving, they gave us each a gift of orange jam. Very thoughtful.

We had lunch at asitane after visiting the Chora museum next door (recommend that too) and discovered a very "different" combination of foods and spices. Clearly "Ottoman" food is different from the Turkish/Balkan that we know and love. I hope to be able to go back before we go home as, even swapping food, we were not able to sample... More

We had dinner at this lovely restaurant, next door to the majestic Chora Church museum. We tasted the authentic Ottoman cuisine, recipes from the 15th to 18th centuries. The dishes were delicious and flavoursome. Had a lovely evening.

I went because people rave about this place, but was disappointed. It's really close to Chora Church which is handy but they were doing works to the Church so it was really noisy! It was also over-priced for so-so food.

A restaurant next to Chora church that serves delicious ottoman cuisine. The rice that can with the veal was absolutely delicious. The services was first class. And the toilet in the bathroom has automatics seat covers.

Went there on a Tuesday and the restaurant was very quiet with us being the third table. Definitely a one of a kind place to try out what the Ottaman royal family liked in the 1500s. No doubt about that. The kind of cooking and base flavour laid traces in many modern cooking.

Visited this restaurant for lunch today mostly on the advice of Anthony Bourdain and the comments on trip advisor and I must say I was completely disappointed. My wife took the selection of 4 appetisers .....could have packed way more punch for the portion size which was 4 quenelles made with teaspoons....had to ask for another roll for these as... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighborhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
