This was one of my first restaurants in Istanbul. Such a romantic place, in a historical building, with real Ottoman Cuisine in a wonderful environment. Great!

This place was recommended to me from a different hotel. The best dinner I had in Istanbul. Excellent quality, service and not expensive as one could think. The restaurant site is clean and confortable. Recommended visit. Won't regret.

All I can say is not value for money. Had bad experience in terms of food. Ordered chicken dish and spinach but that was not upto my expectations. Will never go there again. But hospitality of the waiters were good. Went there thru trip advisor reviews.

I'm so glad we found this place! Picked up a leaflet from our hotel and tracked it down. Fabulous location adjacent to Hagia Sophia, truly beautiful, well cooked, fresh tasting authentic Turkish cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful and lots of mini treats thrown in as 'on the house' which were a delightful added bonus. I hope the tourists come... More

Had lamb shank...good food, good service, nice open atmosphere...the restaurant is located on a terrace with retractable roof...we were staying at the hotel. If you are looking for a little fancy atmosphere after all the gyros on the streets, this may do the trick.

We had been really looking forward to eating at Matbah and the mezes and the lamb shank main course did not disappoint. Service was very good too. Unfortunately one of us ordered a chicken main course and one of the two pieces of chicken was dry and inedible. It's a shame and shouldn't really happen at an expensive restaurant such... More

An excellent site adjacent to Hagia Sophia with sheltered terrace dining overlooking part of the old city. Light, smart decor, well set tables and polite professional staff create a sense of 'fine dining'. There is a well set out menu giving the 'provenance' of many dishes and a wine list features turkish wines. Our dishes, preceded by complimentary pomegranate juice... More

It's always a pleasure to re-visit Matbah. Although they serve pretty heavy dishes, the food is fantastic and you cannot stop tasting everything. Nice terrace and a pretty good wine list to complement. This time we were asked not to stay on the terrace if we insist on having wine for our dinner, because of the Ramadan. So please consider... Saw this restaurant as it was above a Madrassa (for art) that we visited. We were intrigued but knew nothing about it. Decided to try it on a whim. It is a beautiful restaurant, but unfortunately because of terrorism, tourism is down and the restaurant was practically empty. We had a lovely dinner with Mezze and treats brought by the... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
