Had lamb shank...good food, good service, nice open atmosphere...the restaurant is located on a terrace with retractable roof...we were staying at the hotel. If you are looking for a little fancy atmosphere after all the gyros on the streets, this may do the trick.

We had been really looking forward to eating at Matbah and the mezes and the lamb shank main course did not disappoint. Service was very good too. Unfortunately one of us ordered a chicken main course and one of the two pieces of chicken was dry and inedible. It's a shame and shouldn't really happen at an expensive restaurant such... More

An excellent site adjacent to Hagia Sophia with sheltered terrace dining overlooking part of the old city. Light, smart decor, well set tables and polite professional staff create a sense of 'fine dining'. There is a well set out menu giving the 'provenance' of many dishes and a wine list features turkish wines. Our dishes, preceded by complimentary pomegranate juice... More

It's always a pleasure to re-visit Matbah. Although they serve pretty heavy dishes, the food is fantastic and you cannot stop tasting everything. Nice terrace and a pretty good wine list to complement. This time we were asked not to stay on the terrace if we insist on having wine for our dinner, because of the Ramadan. So please consider... Saw this restaurant as it was above a Madrassa (for art) that we visited. We were intrigued but knew nothing about it. Decided to try it on a whim. It is a beautiful restaurant, but unfortunately because of terrorism, tourism is down and the restaurant was practically empty. We had a lovely dinner with Mezze and treats brought by the... More

Located beside the Hagia Sophia, the restaurant is a beautiful walled patio, cool and lovely. The menu features historic palace recipes from the middle ages adapted exquisitely for modern palates. Make a reservation. This was one of our most memorable wonderful meals on a two week trip.

The atmosphere is so magical and the view is fantastic. Location is right by Hagia sophia wall. Me and my best friend had a ramadan iftar there and it was amazing. And they gave us a... More

This is a pretty legit joint. The food was really good - we had the fish balls and the sailor's pie for starters and the goose kebab and the steak for mains. The sailor's pie was fantastic. The honey used for it was tremendous - although we were informed by our trust waiter that it was just regular honey. They've... More

The Matbah was advertised as authentic Sultan cuisine. We would have no way of knowing, but it was very good, and the view and atmosphere is very nice. We ate early and were about the only ones there, I suppose due to recent terrorist activities. But we figured why should we let terrorists win. The chances of trouble are smaller... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
