Went there for lunch, it's very close to Hagia Sophia in a very busy district, so we expected a restaurant full of life, people and ambiance, on the contrary it was empty, spiritless and depressing. The music in the background is ottoman classic music with gave a creepy mood with the emptiness of the restaurant Food was just average nothing... More

The starters were really delicious but the main courses were ordinary. The service was ok. We had no reservation but they got us a table anyway wich was a plus. It seemed to be popular for business people.

The visit to Matbah restaurant exceeded all my expectations. The friendly staff compliment the warm ambience of the place. The food is excellent. I recommend chestnut soup to start, lamb shank as main course and baclava for dessert.

We visited this restaurant twice to assure ourselves that the quality was consistent. It was. We chose completely different menu items. Winter contributed to the dearth of customers. The quality of the food was upto our expectations. We opted for a la carte on both visits to avoid any overlaps. Some of the dishes were exceptional like the quail in... More

We were recommended to dine at Matbah by our concierge and were not disappointed. The Ottoman style food was fantastic and the service first rate. Don't leave without trying the pumpkin dessert! We later spoke with one of the locals who said it was one of his favorite restaurants. The head waiter of another restaurant also acknowledged it is very... More

I went there to experience ottoman cuisine with my sister. The food was good but what exceeded my expectations was the truly great service!! We had to take a taxi back to our hotel and the manager of the restaurant asked the doorman to show us where the taxi will be. They also gave us a small gift which was... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
