Matbah – Ottoman Palace CuisineThe Ottoman Empire has reigned over the huge lands for centuries and coexisted with many nations and cultures. By synthesizing all the acquainted cultures in order to produce a unique taste of its own, through the time, the Ottomans have enriched the Ottoman Cuisine. Several cuisines majorly deriving from Middle Asia, the Balkans, the Middle East and the Europe are the main contributors to the Ottoman Cuisine. This cuisine has prevailed mostly in the kitchens of the Ottoman Palace and therefore, the palace has turned out to be a unique place in order to grasp its tastes completely. Unfortunately, since the guilds of the palace cooks did keep their recipes as professional

This is an excellent site for lunch or dinner to try some traditional Turkish meals as well as some reconstructed Ottoman meals on which the Emperors themselves used to dine. Service is excellent as is the food. Everything is clean. Be adventurous because you will...be rewarded!More

We stopped in by lunch based on the sign outside as we walked down the street. I was really pleasantly surprised when we walked into the restaurant as it was so bright and nicely laid out. The food was very good and the staff really...pleasant. Would definitely look to come back for dinner at some stage.More

Ottoman Imperial Hotel and Matbah Restaurant … Outstanding During a three week trip to Turkey, six days were spent in Istanbul at the Ottoman Imperial Hotel. My most enjoyable dining was at the Matbah located in the hotel. I cannot recommend the hotel or restaurant...too highly. The Ottoman Imperial is located in the Old City … a brief walk to the Sultanahmet’s many historic sites. My room overlooked the Hagia Sofia ... extraordinary view, especially at night. Both the hotel and Matbah Restaurant have an unpretentious and comfortable dignity. The atmosphere is especially warm and welcoming … much appreciated after hours of walking/touring. Matbah’s manager, Mr. Muharrem, gives restaurant guests his complete attention … anticipating their needs, explaining the menu, circulating amongst tables to ensure that all is well, and overseeing a professional and attentive staff. Master Chef Kadir Yilmaz’s talents speak for themselves. Centuries old recipes, researched from the Sultans’ libraries, provide a dining experience from another age. Fresh ingredients combine with a delightful blend of textures and flavors. Dishes are beautifully prepared and presented … more importantly, they are delicious. The menu is reasonably priced. The staff of the Imperial Ottoman and Matbah are among the most dedicated and welcoming I have met during years of overseas travel … they made my visit to Istanbul exceptional.More

We visited during Ramadan and thoroughly enjoyed the set menu: a wide range of small bites to start, sour cherry soup, and bourrek and meatballs. Then a choice of hot dishes and dessert. Lovely rooftop restaurat with good views and excellent service.

The best (goose) soup I've ever had. Our fantastic guide Esin took us to this quiet, relaxing venue located right in the middle of the top Istanbul attractions. After touring the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, and Topkapi Palace we needed to recharge, and this was...the perfect place to do so.More

Service and location were nice. Unfortunately the main courses were disappointing. Mixed shish with chicken, tenderloin, meatball, was overcooked and dried out.

Matbah is in a hotel quite close to Hagia Sophia, but the restaurant is quiet and peaceful. The menu specializes in the cuisine of the Ottoman court and is quite different from the kebabs and similar foods that you get in simpler restaurants. It is...fairly expensive, but well worth it for the experience and the surroundings. We liked it so much that we reserved to go back a second time. The eggplant(aubergine) stuffed with quail and the stuffed melon were particularly good as main courses. The menu is quite short, but everything looked appealing and the recipes in many cases date back several centuries. We ate in the summer garden, which is a terrace open to the sky and to a view over the rooftops of Istanbul. The tables were well spaced and the overall atmosphere was one of quiet elegance. Service was attentive and the wine list suitable. Although fairly expensive by Istanbul standards it is quite reasonable compared to similar places in a Western European city. We enjoyed ourselves immensely.More

Had dinner here. Very pleasant surroundings, unhurried service and beautifully cooked food, although we were disappointed that one of the dishes on what is not a large menu was unavailable despite the fact that we were there in the early evening. It is however a...good place to enjoy lovely food as a special night out. It is not cheap.More
