I was more than a little surprised to find this place in such a small city, even though I affectionately refer to Vientiane as the Western food paradise of SE Asia. We went in the evening and even before you enter you can appreciate how...tastefully decorated the place is. There are beautiful vintage Hungarian posters covering the walls. The menu had plenty of favourites such as goulas and paprikas. The crepe pancakes were done very nicely. The owner came out and we had a good chat over some of his fine Hungarian brandy.More
It was a real surprise to find a Hungarian restaurant in Laos. And particularly because the restaurant is located away from the centre of Vientiane.
Kotai Bala, the proprietor, and his wife have put together an interesting venue with some great Hungarian posters.
The food...includes goulash, Wiener schnitzel and pancakes.
The wine includes a number of Hungarian favourites including Tokay.
We had a good, and certainly different, evening at the Budapest Bistro.More
I'd been meaning to try the place for some time. I particularly like that it's open in the afternoon when I prefer to eat as places are less crowded. I started with the goulash soup which was very tasty and meaty. Followed by the Hungarian...Pork Stew with dumpling which was mildly spicy and a delight. The place has a great decor, air conditioning and excellent service. A real gem.More
On my first visit to the Budapest Bistro a few months ago I was impressed it had potential.
On this trip to Vientiane I re-visited to see how it was going, the first evening I went for dinner, I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel, it appeared...to be veal at least but was so over cooked I could hardly cut it and had to chew my way through it, the Potatoes and Cucumber salad that accompanied the Schnitzel were a good combo.
For desert I ordered the Emperor’s Crumb a shredded Pancake served with tinned fruit and strawberry conserve, it tasted quite good but was very dry, the house red wine was white nice though, I was rather disappointed!
Two days later I returned for lunch, to give it another try, this time I ordered the Hungarian Pork Stew with Dumplings and Salad, this was much better good simple tasty food cooked well, rich and slightly spicy, the shredded Dumpling was a nice touch, the meal was accompanied by the Cucumber Salad again, glad I like Cucumber.
For desert I chose the Hungarian Pancake Gundel style, with Walnuts and flaming Chocolate sauce, the Pancake was very nice and the Chocolate sauce not too sweet with a hint of alcohol to give it a bit of a tang, mine however was not flaming, once more the red wine was great.
I still think the Budapest Bistro has potential but they need to improve the consistency of the food quality and please train your staff, the waiting staff seem to have little idea of what to do or how to serve customers.More
The Budapest Bistro is a great little restaurant on Tatmay Rd, Phosinoun Village, they have a great selection of Hungarian Soups, Mains, Sweets and Wines, you can sit indoors or on the patio out front, the restaurant is clean the wait staff efficient and friendly....I dropped in for lunch and had the Meatballs with vegetables which were delicious and Strawberry Pancakes, again delicious, if you are in the area drop in for an authentic taste of Eastern Europe in Vientiane.More
