I wanted to try this concept since it came about over a decade ago but there is no dining in the dark resto in my country. So when this opportunity came, I decided to also bring my family to have a taste of this unique experience. And we were not disappointed.
From the time of my reservation, Noir already gave a very good impression. They responded promptly to my emails and accommodated my dietary requests without question. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and served some cold drinks (I only wish that that the glass was not just half-full since we were so thirsty at that time). We also played a little game which gave us a feel of how it is to work with our hands without our sight to guide us.
My family, which included my 80 year old mother and 87 year old father, was not prepared for what is in store for them since I didn't tell them anything. Nevertheless, they enjoyed every bit of the challenge (it wasn't easy scooping food and bringing it to your mouth when it is pitch black). There were lots of conversations and laughter since we didn't have our mobile phones to distract us. It was really good for family bonding.
Food was also great. My son, who doesn't eat mushrooms, finished his bowl of salad which was mainly composed of well...mushrooms. In normal days, maybe we would have skipped some of the ingredients which we usually don't like or are not familiar with but since we can't see anything, we simply ate everything with gusto.
Price was a little bit high and it doesn't include drinks but if it is a different kind of experience that you are after, it was all worth it.

Dear Noir.-lovers,
Thank you for visiting our restaurant and it was nice meeting you and your family.
I am pleased you liked the dinner from service to food.
We definitely take our eye sight for granted, normally we do not realize how much we are dependent on our vision, until you set foot into our dark dining room. Suddenly you just have taste and smell to identify to dishes, which is unquestionably a challenge. You for sure came to the conclusion, or at least confirmed, the fact that we are eating with our eyes.
And therefore it is quite normal to start liking ingredients you normally claim not to eat or not to like. It happens all the time. Without the sense of sight and solely focussed on the sense of taste and smell, it is truly hard to guess what the ingredients are.
There are indeed cheaper dining options in Saigon, although there are many more expensive options too. It is of course how one compares; we feel that for the products and services we offer we charge a fair price compared to other restaurants here in the city and to those with a similar concept in the region. We do also employ more staff since we have in fact two service teams since the experience required more service staffs.
Thank you for your review and we do look forward to welcoming you back again,
Kind regards,
Germ

I loved this experience. It's unique, and very well delivered. On top of this, it's a social enterprise that supports visually impaired people by providing training and jobs in hospitality.
My friends and I had the Asian/Oriental menu and enjoyed every dish. Our server was very lovely as well, and communicated with us throughout our meal to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves.
The food itself was delicious. The menu was made up of classic Vietnamese dishes that were elevated with fresh ingredients, modern cooking techniques and surprising twists. The concept was executed really well, because we were really able to focus on the food, the flavours, textures, smells... So wonderful!
The price that you pay for the quality of food and service is really good value.
Will be recommending it to anyone and everyone travelling to HCMC.

Dear Michelle,
Thank you for your review and for choosing Noir. Dining in the Dark for dinner. We enjoyed sharing this unique experience with you. Seems you had a great evening with great dinner.
Since 83% of our senses is sight, in the dark with 17% left for four senses there is indeed an overload on your senses; taste and smell heighten, you will start to touch everything around you and the texture of the food is suddenly more noticeable, also oneβs hearing does become intensified.
We take sight quite for granted and you definitely came to the conclusion, or at least confirmed the fact, that we are eating with our eyes.
Thank you for the recommending words and it would be very to have the chance of welcoming you back, until then,
Kind regards,
Germ

This is a dining experience in an absolutely dark room, and by that I mean pitch black.
Thereβs a bit of orientation involved, including solving a puzzle game while blindfolded, and then you are led by your waiter upstairs and through a series of curtains, with your eyes shut. You put your hands on the waiterβs shoulders as they lead you all the way to your table, and only then do you open your eyes - not that it will make any difference because at this point you are totally blind!
As it turns out, the waiters are also blind, and some of the people that serve you are deaf and mute, (such as the guy that gave us the orientation game to solve).
We chose the 11-dish Vietnamese menu, which is brought out and put on your table in three courses. You need to navigate your way through each of the dishes in turn, while finding your cocktail versus your water, versus your fork and spoon, all while in the pitch black environment*.
Itβs a first-rate dining experience like none other!

Dear Tony of Adelaide,
Thank you for detailed and kind review. We are so glad that you have had such a special and marvellous time dining at our restaurant. It is a great pleasure to be able to make each and every diner feels at home, and the team was more than happy to have served you.
We believe now you would "see" your food in a different light and hopefully, the next time you come, you would be able to pass the challenge with flying colours. Anyway, congratulations for doing well already!
Thank you for the picture of your dinner; it is the main course, I am right? ο
It was a pleasure welcoming you and we do look forward to seeing you return once your travels let you go back to Saigon,
Kind regards,

We had the western menu ( you can choose eastern one if you like ) and we guessed some of the things we were eating and some of the dishes we didnβt know or recognise at all.
We were led upstairs by a gentleman who was blind ,he was our waiter for the evening. He helped us to sit down and explained what was on the table including where our drinks and water was. It is pitch dark ,you cannot see a thing ,I found it a bit odd but we could hear people talking but had no idea how many other diners were around. When I say you canβt see you really canβt ! The food was all very nice and tasty and after youβve eaten you go downstairs where a member of staff goes through the full menu ,lots of surprises ...we had beef which we thought was chicken but I wonβt say any more or it spoils your experience.
I did enjoy it,Iβm not sure βenjoy β is the right word but it was certainly a new and very different experience for us both .We laughed later at how bizarre it all was. We can take all our senses for granted and it takes an experience like this to make you realise this.
Good fun.,,go and try it for yourself .

Dear Jane,
Thank you for sharing your impressions of your dinner. It was very nice to welcoming you.
Oftentimes, we tend to overlook and take our senses for granted, but here at Noir. Dining in the Dark we learn how to appreciate them. As the menus are not disclosed beforehand and no one is able to see while dining at our restaurant, we want to ensure our diner feel comfortable and confident as they enjoy their dinner. So, our guides are trained to explain the table setting, how each course is laid out and where to begin.
We definitely do not place a lot of thought on our eye sight, normally we do not realize how much we are dependent on our vision, until you set foot into our dark dining room. Suddenly you just have taste and smell to identify to dishes, which is unquestionably a challenge. You for sure came to the conclusion, or at least confirmed, the fact that we are eating with our eyes.

Went with my husband and our two teens, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The staff who greet you in the reception area, take food and drink orders and explain whatβs going to happen, as well as discuss the dishes afterwards, are exceptionally pleasant. Three of us ordered the vegan option and we were pleasantly surprised at how nice the food was. There were 11 small dishes altogether and it was great fun to guess what ingredients we were eating - would be even better if everybody is eating the same. Being deprived of sight was very interesting and would be very romantic for a couple - when you reach out and touch your partnerβs hand in the dark, you realise your sense of touch has been enhanced! Our blind waiter was very professional and friendly. Itβs amazing how this place is able to accommodate so many dietary requirements, and organise the serving of dishes in the dark.

Dear Jenny,
Thank you for your kind review and it was such a pleasure meeting you and your family.
It is great to read you liked the dinner from the service to the food.
We do encourage our diners to explore the complete "gastronomic journey" through our menu, putting aside one's likes or dislikes, and give dining in the dark a try; one might realise that a lot of likes and dislikes are just confirmed by the eyes and not necessarily by the taste and smell.
However we do take food allergies and dietary restrictions out of belief or religion very seriously; absolutely no issue at all to tweak the menu around.
I enjoyed talking to you after dinner and going over the concept of the restaurant and showing you the pictures of the dishes you had for dinner.
It would be lovely to welcome you back one day, we are looking forward to it,
Kind regards,
Germ

A novel concept to enjoy food in pitch black, and they really mean it. Just relax and close your eyes and taste the dishes, cause even if you try your best you wonβt see anything. Such a meaningful thing to pave the way for the blind and deaf to work, and it all worked out extremely well. Bravo to the idea.
Fresh and beautifully cooked food, and it is enjoyed mysteriously in the dark. Definitely will be back to try out the western menu. Totally exploded and stunned with the taste of everything in the eastern menu.
In addition, the restaurant is beautifully decorated with ancient furniture from around 1,2 centuries ago. The view is warm, cozy and magnificent. Also the blind game while waiting for table is interesting.
Overall, awesome restaurant. Definitely will come back, a lot more times.

Dear Anthony,
Thank you for raving review. We enjoyed sharing this unique experience with you.
I am pleased you liked the dinner from service to food.
Besides having a unique dining experience in the dark and job creation for the blind and visually impaired, this concept also allows our guests to get a better insight into the life and work of the blind. I am happy that that is noticed and appreciated by you.
We believe the lack of experience in the service team - none of them had any employment prior to Noir. - is compensated by their passion, enthusiasm and possibility to show our guests how it is to be in a complete dark situation.
Glad you like to come back, we are looking forward to it!
Kind regards,
Germ

Our tour guide suggested this restaurant partly because of the food, but mainly for the experience of eating without being able to use your sight. Myself and my brother visited on New Year's Eve and were blown away by every aspect of the evening. The welcome and service were second to none, and arriving to a glass of sparkling wine and canapΓ©s was a very nice touch. Once inside the entirely dark restaurant area, everything we were given to eat (four separate courses) was of fine dining quality and much of our conversation was regarding what we thought we were eating. Our waiter was attentive and helpful throughout, without being obtrusive and guided us through the whole process (including where to locate our cutlery!).
Once our dessert course was finished, we were led back into the lounge area of the restaurant, provided with another drink and final sweet samples, and the owner went through exactly what we had eaten during the evening.
I cannot recommend a visit to Noir highly enough - if you are in Saigon for any length of time, you have to give this place a try. You seriously won't regret it!

As other reviews have stated, this is indeed a very unique dining experience. We had tried something similar before (in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and I have to say that Noir did it slightly better. It's a little bit strange at first but once you get used to the darkness the fun begins. Eating without using your eyes is a very special thing to do and it's crazy how far off you can be sometimes with guessing what it is you ate.
The food itself was delicious with some very interesting combinations. You can tell from taste and texture that they only use high quality ingredients.
They listen to any restrictions such as food allergies or intolerances you may have and double check without giving away anything on the menu.
Afterwards we chatted for a good 30 minutes with the owner discussing the menu as well as our holiday. Super nice guy! We had a great time and will definitely return if we ever come back to Vietnam!

Dear Bart,
Thank you for your kind review and it was very nice welcoming you. We are pleased you liked the restaurant, the dinner and the food.
We are quite proud of our kitchen team and the dishes they prepare. The team places a lot of effort in the development, preparation and even presentation the dishes, since it is a big part of the dining experience. We really want to make sure the food and the service are fully enjoyed by our guests and that is why it is a great you did enjoy
No doubt dining in the dark is unique and strange at the beginning. It is not often that we are in surroundings with totally no light at all. The senses of taste, smell and touch heighten and we perceive a meal in a different way. For you as a guest most certainly unique, for our service staff job opportunities at the same time.
I enjoyed talking to you after dinner and going over the concept of the restaurant and showing you the pictures of the dishes you had for dinner.
Thank you for your warm recommendations and it would be a pleasure to welcoming you back,
Kind regards,

The staff performs a bit of a symphony of service when you arrive. You're welcomed with a drink (alcoholic or not). You're asked to place shapes onto a board blind folded and they walk you through the menu. You're then escorted to your dining area by a person who is visually impaired and who is to be your server for the evening.
Hieu was our guy - he was fantastic! He was funny and charismatic. I one point I said, "I see" and Hieu laughed and made a joke about it. My boyfriend and I chose the menu from the West so that we can both try to identify our meal.
At first i freaked out. I didnt even want to put my feet on the floor. After a bit you feel a lot more comfortable with the experience. I highly recommend this to anyone who's interested.
At the end of the night we were shown pictures of the different dishes we ate - we were wayyy off. The staff member who walked us through the pictures was the loveliest. I wish i remembered his name. He explained the history of Noir, where it started, how it now has expanded to hiring hearing impaired as well in their flower shop. The entire evening was an unforgettable experience. -Must go!

Our staff takes great pride in what they do and are always more than happy to assist you and contribute to a most comfortable dinner. How wonderful that you liked the service provided by Hieu.
It was our pleasure to have served you and we are really glad that not only did you enjoy yourself thoroughly, you managed to have a chat with our visually impaired guides to understand more about them and how their world is like.
Thank you for the nice recommendation and we do look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back,

I went the other night with two friends visiting me from America. You choose from three menus: Asian, Western, and Veg. As explained beforehand by staff, we all chose the same menu so we could all try and guess what we're eating, together. Also, before going into the dining room, you put on a blindfold and practice fitting small wood blocks into different matched slots so you can return the dishes to the tray when in the actual dining room.
We chose the Asian menu and we were brought out the appetizer course followed by the main courses and then dessert dishes. You aren't wearing a blindfold as it's complete darkness inside the dining room. You can hear others talking but you have no idea how many people are in the room or even where they might be sitting.
The real fun is when you finish, return to the lobby and someone comes out with a big tablet and shows us exactly what we had to eat. The food was good but it's kind of difficult to rate, partly because you can't see it and at times I found myself concentrating on getting the food on the fork so the process of eating can be distracting from the actual culinary experience. Still, it's a fun and different dining experience and the more people in your party, the more discussion there is.

Dear Brian,
Thank you for writing about your impressions of your recent dinner in the dark.
We are pleased you liked the dinner and found the experience fun.
For sure it is fun trying to guess the ingredients once you cannot see the dishes. We take our sight very much for granted. Once having a meal in the dark and focussing on smell and taste alone makes you realise how much we are reliant on our eyes.
You are also more focussed on conversations with one another at the table.
It was a pleasure welcoming you and we do look forward to hearing from you again once you return to Saigon,
Kind regards,

I took my wife here last week to celebrate our anniversary. It was a great date for us being away from the kids and it allowed us to really focus on talking with each other and to listen to each other closely. So this experience really awakens your other senses that we take for granted. It also allowed us to really appreciate our eyesight as you could not see anything. The staff was great from the very start: motorbike guard, greeter at door, welcoming host, server, and checkout host. Our blind server - Thu - was very great. She guided us very well and we were not worried at all not being able to see anything. The food was great as we chose the menu from the West. And it was very interesting talking with my wife in the dark trying to figure out what each dish was. Overall, it was a great experience and we did not have any complaints. It is a bit pricy but it was worth it taking my wife out and also giving back to those who made our experience great at Noir.

We went to Noir just knowing we would be eating in complete darkness but what we did not know that itβd be so dark that you couldn't even see your hand if you held it very close to your face.
It got a little overwhelming for the first few minutes but then became fun.
We were welcomed very warmly, explained the entire concept while we drank a surprise welcome drink.
We were then introduced to our caretaker for the meal Ms. Thu who did a fantastic job.
We had the vegetarian set menu and it the meal was very tasty and filling.
If youβre in Ho chi minh and want to try something new and different, go have a meal at this place

Dear Ankur Apte,
Greetings from Saigon. How wonderful to receive such a nice message of compliments. Thank you indeed for choosing our restaurant for your special occasion and for taking the time to write your impressions. It is always a pleasure to be able to pass on such positive feedback to the team members who contributed to the success of your visit.
I am glad you liked it. It can be rather unnatural at first, there is suddenly absolutely no light in the dining room and in our lives there is always light around us. We are very depended on sight, and that is something we take very much for granted. However, as you mentioned after some time one gets easily adjusted and can feel liberating at times and fun to guess the ingredients in the dishes.
Thank you for recommending our restaurant and Thu, the team and I do look forward to welcoming you back,
Kind regards,
Germ

From the very first second, guests are carried in the palms of competent and caring hands, and guided through an unusual and deeply satisfying 'foodie' experience.
With choices of Vegetarian, Eastern or Western menus, guests get to switch off their valuable sense of sight, which heightens every other sense and makes this a unique dining adventure.
Our waiter, Bao, was attentive and efficient and every other staff member slickly led us through the process with sincerity and professionalism.
If you are intimidated by the thought of not seeing your food, or being blinded for an hour, then consider their new restaurant, Blanc, which is an A la carte fine dining experience, where you are challenged to communicate in Vietnamese sign language, to the non-verbal staff.
I wouldn't hesitate to take appreciative older children.
The prices are exceptionally reasonable for what you get in return.

Noir - is the most fascinating dinner experience.
Upon arrival, you are welcomed in the most fabulous and attentive way. Cocktails are dreamy and the decoration of the hall d'entrΓ©e is elegant and chic. After enjoying your delicious drink, being explained how everything works and even have a little game to start using your senses in a different way, you are directed to the main restaurant where your fantastic waiter welcomes you...
It is a must do! I can't empathise this enough. Apart from the delicious food the hole experience is absolutely amazing. I've been there by myself and then with my partner -both times were awesome and completely different. I will definitely love to visit again soon. Highly recommended!
