I had my dinner here with one of my best friend. We were suprised by how enthusiastic, supportive and professional the servers were. We have learnt that they were all students, so impressive. The food was quite good, specialized in French cuisine. The atmosphere was...chilling with French music but the restaurant is quite small. Generally, the whole experience was good. I will comeback if I have time!More

Very good dessert and space. Poor taste for music. Nice people. And excellent choice to escape the afternoon heat.

Pretty restaurant with promise. However, food is meh. did enjoy the foie gras but the rest of the meal was lackluster. Probably the most disappointing meal we encountered in Vietnam.

The first time to the restaurant Vatel. I feel very satisfied with the service style of the staff here, as well as space cozy and equally luxurious. The staff and manager are very enthusiastic and fun to me. They showed me the family's special set...menu restaurant. Then me and my family chose the set: Earth & Sea, East & West, Royal and 1 part cow Alacade Rossini. The food in the set very tasty, especially the foie gras and beef dishes Rossini. As said the director and staff recommend dishes according Vatel brand in foie gras and beef Rossini's. After the starter, maincourse came to dessert, it was great to my family to enjoy France as Tiramisu cakes, Chesse cake. After the meal my family is very happy about the food and services of staff here. If you want to enjoy the good food and service style French style, do not hesitate, go to the restaurant Vatel to verify howMore

Don't go to this restaurant, save you money for much better places, of which Saigon has many. I went here recently, meeting up with 3 friends for a special evening together. Vatel looks as elegant is its owner and although medium expensive (200,000 - 400,000...Dong a course) the menu promises a delicious, interesting range. Plus Vatel runs a hospitality and cooking course at a local university. So all the signs were promising. What a let down it turned out to be. Very ordinary cooking with very little flavour or style, in fact boring to the palate, and small portions. That wouldn't matter if it was inspired cooking. We mentioned this to the owner, who had fussed around us all night, until we told her our disappointment. When it came time to pay, she was nowhere to be seen....that speaks volumes in my book. Go elsewhere.More

In anticipation of my 82 year old mother's and my eldest sister's arrival in Ho Chi Minh, I researched and visited a number of restaurants in the vacinity of their hotel. The idea of changing things up and going to a French restaurant in Vietnam...was a result of their love of this wonderful cuisine and having already spent 15 days in country on an organised tour. Restaurant Vatel appeared to have a lot going for it. It is a good looking, intimate venue, the menu included some promising options, it has a relationship with Ho Chi Minh's Hoa Sen University and employs local students and previous reviews had been very positive. I met the manager, Gina on two occasions prior to our evening meal. Gina is an extremely elegant, well spoken Vietnamese woman who spends part of the year living in Paris. She is also a very good and convincing sales person. Indeed another member of my family's tour party was equally smittened with Restaurant Vatel and joined our party after we stopped by for a coffee to confirm our reservation. Sadly, we were less than enamoured with our restaurant experience. In essence, the dishes we experienced at Restaurant Vatel went from laughably awful to disappointingly bad. We are in the restaurant's VIP room and were greeted by the sight of a recently deceased cockroach, albeit the size of the corpse was impressive it was clearly an early warning sign. After the body was removed, we were presented with an Amuse-bouche which generated some nervous laughter ... grated carrot, ham and little cubes of cheese ... it tasted pretty much what it sounded like. I ordered, at the recommendation of Gina, the "Royal Menu" (450,000d) which consisted of - Pan-fried foie gras, Shrimp Risotto with Provencal Tomato and "Dessert Special Vatel (Chef's pastry and icecream). The froie gras was very good and nicely presented but things quickly returned to err "form". The Rissotto was a pallid fart of mediocrity and the dessert was, for a lack of a better word, boring! My fellow dining companions fared no better. My mother ordered, as her main course, the "advertised" Grilled rack of lamb in a Bearnaise sauce (320,000d). What she received, in fact, was Lamb Chops which tasted like mutton. A barely touched dish laid testament to her views on this disappointing dish and the kitchen's deception. My sister, also an experienced traveller and resident of New York City for the past 38 years spent a great deal of her dining experience shaking her head in disbelief ... such culinary incompetence from a restaurant with an alleged pedigree is rare indeed. She also suffered the indignity of having one of her utensils fall onto her foot as the sole wait staff clumsily and unprofessionally clear multiple plates haphazardly from the table. Our invited guest, a documentary maker based in Indonesia and with 9 years residing in London was equally dismayed with his dishes including what appeared to be, from the menu, a promising Baked Fish Cassolette. In closing, having emptied my wallet of US $90, I have never seen or tasted such amateurish dishes sold at such an exorbitant price.More
