Great Indian cuisine !

We really liked the food here. We had a Tandoor dish and a type of curry dish, accompanied by naan and rice. We started with the scallops appetizer. Our helpful and friendly waiter advised us that we had possibly ordered too much food and offered to give us 1/2 order of one of our dishes, which we highly appreciated The portions are very generous and everything was excellent. We were excited to have kulfi and gulab jamun for dessert The atmosphere of the restaurant is very comfortable and attractive

Excellent Indian Meal!

I never felt the requirement for an 'Indian meal fix' until I went to Charcoal the first few times. By now every couple of weeks I suddenly crave Indian food and off I head to the restaurant. The service is top notch, similar to the levels of service one receives in top notch restaurants in India. The food is simply delightful, good quality ingredients, well-prepared, consistent and very tasty. I prefer to go with a larger group to have the chance to order various dishes, but it also works for just two people. The place is buzzing every day of the week, and they also have great cocktails, I suggest: Delhi Duty Free and Black Money. The overall experience is always consistent and I keep coming back for more!

Great concept with delicious food and drinks!

First stop on my Bangkok tour was Charcoal. The ambience was great and all the dishes we had were very tasty and freshly made to order! They have an amazing cocktail list and you can tell they take time creating and preparing them. All the ones we tried were good! Service was a little iffy at times even though the place was not full but seems like the typical for any Indian restaurant. Definitely a unique and tasty dining experience!

Not up to my expectations

A special occasion type of restaurant with good design and ambiance complimented by good service but for the price felt disappointed. By international standards this is expensive for an Indian restaurant. Of the various dishes we tried not one was exceptional. Did like the Dahl, nans and rice but disappointed with the tandoori chicken(not enough flavour from the marinade even though the chicken was tender) and the leg of lamb from the tandoor. Maybe we ordered badly so would be willing to go back and try other dishes from there large menu. A nice touch considering how expensive this restaurant is would be to give every diner an after dinner "pan" on the house rather than charge 60 Baht.

Bollywood Dancers a highlight.

You know that when the review starts with the dancers and not the food that something maybe a little off. Which is such a shame as this is our local Indian and we've had some fabulous evenings here. Judging by the other reviews around our time we may have been unlucky with the food, but we will laugh about the long wait for the burnt nan bread - a signature dish - for a long time. Our other favourites the leg of lamb and the broccoli were disappointing compared with usual making this a poor meal. The Manager has handled the situation well on the evening issuing free desserts for the table and written an apologetic reply to our feedback for which we are appreciative. For this alone we will look to return for a future dinner. However, I won't have the confidence to return with a group of friends saying 'this is the best Indian around' until we have rechecked and I would not book for a celebration at the moment.Having said that the Bollywood dancers were a great new touch and really added to the atmosphere. We absolutely wish them all the best in recreating the charm of Charcoal. We know it's difficult times and we want you back as great as you always used to be!

Everything about this place is truly amazing!! Gerald made our visit extra special by being helpful beyond expectation. He not only told us great vegetarian and meat options but also cocktails to compliment the flavours. We handed our decision making over to Gerald and we were blown away by the quality and flavours of the meal! The restaurants ambiance was spectacular and very unique. You can see your food being cooked in its special charcoal way and the toilets take you to India with the signs and sounds that you experience. It was our anniversary and our friend made the booking; we had the lovely surprise of a complimentary cake from the restaurant! Thank you everyone, we can’t wait to visit again!

Good food, service needs to be improved`

The food was great. Overall good service and staff, but some staff in the restaurant are rather unfriendly and was not willing to help. We stayed 2 weeks and had breakfast included. Every morning the table was arrange only after arriving there, considering that the restaurant was quite empty is not very careful. We have a baby with us, and the food was always put in reach of the baby, which could lead to issues.

Best Indian food in Thailand!

I really wanted to check out this restaurant during our Thailand trip and I am so glad we did. Everything about this restaurant is 5 star - ambiance, food and service. Malai broccoli and veg Biryani were the highlight of our dinner. Special shout-out to our server Vikram who really helped us pick the right options from the menu.

Top notch food (5.0) let down by average service (2.0)

One of our hot favourites for special occasions - we have celebrated birthdays, farewells here regularly and have never been disappointed with the food and service. This time we booked for our wedding anniversary (through Chope) with a request for a small cake. Right from the get go we could sense this was going to be a “slow service” night - place was packed and staff strength was half !! Great food (Murgh angaaar, Lamb Biryani avadhi style, Dum Key Bhooley) salvaged the evening although our cake request was blithely ignored ... Please do take these small things into consideration - they make a BIG difference in ensuring we remain loyal customers in the future !

Absolutely fantastic

After a while you get a feeling that this is going to be good, before you've even eaten anything.....I can honestly say this is the best Indian food I've eaten outside of the sub continent The ambiance is stunning, lots of brick and earthy colours. There's a show kitchin so you can see the huge , imported from India tandoors being used. No rice, just wonderful soft unctious meat served with stunning dhal and beautiful naan bread, light and delicate, unlike the doughy ones on the UK. If your in Bangkok and appreciate great food you've got to visit.

Very good food, but a few misgivings

The ambience and inside of the restaurant was very pleasant. Drinks were good and service was good. Food was excellent though quite expensive. Quite noisy, but still enjoyable. Lamb Sheekh kebab starter was 450 Baht, a Murgh Angaar 450 baht, a garlic naan 110 baht and gosht dum biryani was 650 baht. Not cheap by any means, once drinks and a pudding is added. Total bill was 2972 baht. Toilet door in the ladies was impossible to shut and lock so was unable to use.

A very pleasant experience

It was a very nice experience of tasting some delectable dishes which the Manager served....the Hyderabadi Kathal Biryani which was very well done.The Manager specifically told us to taste the Tandoori Malai Broccoli which was also done very well. Surely, a place to visit again for vegetarians too!!!

A pleasant surprise... an exceptional meal

As Indian food lovers we decided to dine here after looking at countless options in Bangkok, in all honesty we did not expect to have such an amazing gastronomic experience, but we were glad to be totally proved wrong. The restaurant has a great concept in focusing on North-western Indian charcoal grilled specialities, they are truly passionate and honest to their cuisine, which we total respect. This is not the classic albeit generic Indian restaurant you will encounter in cities all over the world. Furthermore it was a welcome surprise to have a more focused menu without hundreds of options, they also offer a comprehensive drinks menu with some great Indian inspired cocktails/mocktails. The dishes are extremely well executed, the textures and balance of spices/flavours is spot on, each maintaining a charcoal smoky influence. Some great dishes to mention, the Char Coal Dal, the lamb Sheekh Kebab, Murgh Malai Kebab and Murgh Angaar, we look forward to trying the rest of the menu when we return. The grilled lamb and chicken dishes from the charcoal pit were amazingly succulent and have irresistible flavours! Servings are generous, as a couple we could not finish, the dish presentation is contemporary whilst maintaining a traditional Indian feel. The restaurant is set inside a hotel with both inside and terrace dinning with tasteful contemporary decoration and soft lighting. From start to finish the service was excellent, we felt like guests and the team were attentive and extremely knowledgeable about the dishes they serve. Big thanks to all the team, with a special mention to the Prerak the manager and the head chef for their personal attention and insights.

How To Improve Upon A Great Experience

The seasoning and execution of the kebabs was excellent with only a few out of several dozen that came out a bit on the dry side. In order to justify the price of the weekend brunch buffet, the selection of meat kebabs available should be expanded. The oven used for making pizza was broken when I visited, which should again be addressed by an early morning test of the equipment with a near noon opening. I let them know I did not drink alcohol and was brought a mocktail without asking what flavors I liked and it was not to my taste, which should have instead have been based on a request of what flavors I enjoy. Since I have a love of Indian food, I spent a week eating at most of the Indian restaurants I could find in and outside Pahurat. I would say that Charcoal had among the best of the non curry meat offerings when accounting for seasoning and execution, but at the price point more variety is needed to produce an overall culinary experience that is superior to what could be ordered a la carte at other Bangkok Indian restaurants.

What a fabulous experience. From the minute I entered, Prerak and his team were simply superb. I was allowed to have the Chairman’s menu even though I was alone and the dishes just kept coming, each one an absolute delight. The taste sensations were amazing and the meats so very succulent and juicy. The lamb is so so good and the roti just the best I ever had. A very special birthday treat to myself as working in Bangkok alone, made all the more special by the little cake at the end. Thank you and see you again soon.
