We ventured into Chinatown after visiting Wat Raimit, which is close by. Chinatown is the usual hustle and bustle, like anywhere around the world. If you go down the side soi's, you'll enter very packed streets full of people and vendors selling anything from Chinese medicine to tacky toys, gifts etc. There are lots of street vendors selling food to... This area in the old part of Bangkok is just a good place to wander through, especially if you have never been to China. The buildings are a mixture of colonial styles and are now home to a lot of wholesale companies. Fake shark's fin restaurants sit alongside Chinese medicine vendors and souvenir stalls. Go there on the subway and... More

I took a cab to Chinatown (100 baht) to take some photos. I walked around with my tripod & camera and shot away! Got some great shots that portray the heart of this area and felt safe and had a unique experience that most tourists don't get...best of all, it was cheap and fun!

Poor hygiene conditions, smell from about 1km away of effluent, people going to toilet on the street. Street market rubbish, smokey etc.

Get there early before the tourists come. The easy way is to use the BTS skytrain (get off at Hua Lamphong station). There is a huge wholesale market for cloths, shoes and toys . The jetty is close by so you can take a river taxi for a cruise on the Chao Phraya or just to go the other side... More

Staying in Silom

Neighborhood Profile
Silom
Despite the lack of any major tourist attractions, this lively neighborhood is a favorite of many. Whether it's the (somewhat naughty) nightlife of Soi Patpong, the various handicraft night markets or the plethora of dining options that tickle your fancy, a night out in Silom is a must on every itinerary. It's worth a stop during daytime, too: join office workers on a quest to tasty street food during lunch and shop at Silom Complex for a great mix of Thai and international stores. After a day of strolling around the congested sidewalks, a visit to Silom's Lumphini Park, Bangkok's answer to NYC's Central Park, is a welcome change of scenery.
