Currently part of The Yak and Yeti Hotel, this fabulous restaurant has been famous in Kathmandu for more than forty years. It is actually located in an old Rana Palace which also contains the old Crystal Ballroom, from ages past, which is worth taking a peek if you can find someone to turn the lights on for you. This restaurant... More

The dinner was very good and tasty, because we were the only guests we got lots of extra things (cheese, chocolates). We had the cheese soufflé which was not as heavy as we thought it would be, and as main course the chateaubriand with lots of vegetables. There is a really cosy atmosphere and the waiters really give lots of... More

This is at the top end of the price range for restaurants in Kathmandu, but this is not reflected in the food. The food is good, tasty, fresh and all the things you'd expect at a good restaurant, but forgettable. At these prices the dining experience should be memorable, for the taste, the atmosphere, the service etc. There is no... More

The 4-course candle-lit dinner was part of a package through Yak & Yeti Hotel so it was a fixed menu (although 4 choices for the main) at a reasonable price (relatively cheap for us, very expensive for Nepalese). There were actually 5 courses - appetiser, entrée, soup (never had garlic soup before), main and dessert. Lots of bread with oil... More

I stayed at Yak & Yeti hotel and it was convenient for visit this nice restaurant. We went there with colleagues for the Valentine's Day and had a delicious meal. Chicken Kiev was very good and the serving was good as well. I would recommend this place, but make sure you book a table in advance.

we choose this place to have our christmas dinner there. The food variety was great and a good spread, certainly not comparable to some other 5* Hotel restaurants, but I believe for Kathmandu this is on the upper level. It had the usual Christmas fare like turkey, lamb shank, a wide starter buffet with salads, cold cuts and soup. Additionally,... More

Ordered their Filet mignon- hard, tasteless, full of grizzle- a bad cut of meat- inedible- the setting is nice enough with its center fireplace for the winters- one can tell they are trying hard to sell this place as upscale but just like the $10 / day tourists KTM attracts they should just stick to Nepali food and be authentic... Fantastic location (at the Yak and Yeti hotel) with a very well presented interior with tables surrounding the eponymous copper chimney as the centrepiece. Food was very good, and the service was exceptional.

Description
At the time when the longest standing restaurant of its quality was created, the path to The Chimney was just a series of dirt lanes winding between stone houses in the jewel of the medieval Kathmandu Valley. In a fairytale land of not so long ago, the infamous Boris Lissanevitch established The Chimney. Boris' name alone conjures up legends of his unheeded extravagance and enigmatic adventures; famed Russian ballet dancer, entrepreneur, and entertainer of royalty, the tradition of the unprecedented Boris and his Chimney Restaurant continues to this day.

By night, the handcrafted, open, copper-shafted fireplace blazes and the vaulted ceilings of The Chimney are illuminated with the shadows of myths as tall as Everest. Boris' original recipes live on as his famous Borstch is served as well as the Smoked Bekti, Chicken a la Kiev, and the flaming baked Alaska Sagarmatha.

Traditional favorites are honored while an inspired international menu at The Chimney achieves distinction of its own. With a palette of fresh ingredients, is refined with masterful innovation. Savor Rack of Lamb with an Eggplant and Sesame Ragout and relish the piquant Tartare of Smoked Salmon with Wasabi, but be warned, new creations are always coming out to tempt you.
