It is a shaggy, loveable joint. They only accept cash or check (so keep that in mind). It's the type of diner where you walk in, seat yourself in a booth or on a stool where you get to watch the quick-order cooks make your breakfast. The staff is local and very personable. The "Famous pancake" is huuuuuuge. I would... More

We had moved our daughter back to Ames for the school year the day before. Before leaving town we wanted to go out for breakfast. A friend recommended the Grove. This was a hole in the wall on Main /street in Ames. The street has many little shops and bars in remodeled buildings so it is quite nice. The Grove... More

This diner is only open for breakfast and lunch. On the weekends, get here before 8:00 AM to get seated without a wait. We try to get to The Grove every trip we make to Ames, specifically for the pancakes. The Grove's pancakes are as big as the dinner plate they are served and very delicious. Unless you are extremely... More

Go for breakfast, have the pancake (yes-just one because it's huge) with the homemade syrup. My kids love sitting up at the counter and watching their food being made. breakfast burritos are good too - usually one on special

exceptional omlets here and the coffee is good, hot, and fresh...there are tables and stools at the counter... fun to watch as regulars come in and get 'the usual"... this is not a fancy place by any means but the food is good and as comfortable as home...when in Ames we will be back for more

The Grove is just an Ames staple! They don't have the best food on the planet, but their breakfast is awesome! Best pancakes that use cake batter. Can't go wrong!

Order the special pancake it's amazing, it will be top with some sort of jam type mixture that is to die for. Great cozy diner. Great service!

This is a nice place as far as the food is concerned. But the place is cramped and needs some work. My last visit, the booth we sat in the seat was torn. The place needs a cleanup and painting. But this is a popular place for breakfast and lunch. Food is good and reasonable.

We like to try local places when we travel, and we especially like little diners in small towns for breakfast. Grove Cafe in Ames, Iowa is the ideal place, with the locals sitting at the Formica counter, old booths with tears in the upholstery, friendly service, and simple, but delicious food. I highly recommend the pancake for breakfast; it's one... More

Came for breakfast--sausage was good everything else is just okay. Booth we sat in was dirty. I had to ask for water and they filled only mine yet two others at my table were also empty. We were here in September and had a much better experience. Will not be coming back.

Thank LeannePas
