When you are visiting downtown Ames, you will be able to grab a quick lunch or dinner at this fine new cafe and bakery on the west side of town. All of the baking is done here and the food is fresh and tasty. They have homemade soups and typical bakery items. Sandwiches are made up fresh and cost $6-8 with chips and a pickle. If you like soup and sandwich, expect to pay $10. There is no beer or wine, but they offer Italian coffee with one free refill. There is a nice open area for dining inside and they have take-out. Free WiFi, TVs and a small play area for kids are available. Hours are 7 am to 6 pm on Mon-Fri, and 7 am to 1 pm on Sat. They also sell gluten-free foods and a fresh loaf of bread is $6.

Hello, rshedges516. Thank you for a very detailed review of our bakery café in Ames. We are incredibly grateful for customers like you who take time to help to tell others about our place, especially since we are still relatively new in Ames. (So new that we are still learning the ropes about using UGC apps like TripAdvisor. Sorry for the delay to your response, but we’re on it now.)

We had a group of ladies that went for lunch. They forgot to bring one lunch and came to ask what she order. When they brought the others lunch, they had no idea what sandwich to give to us. With my lunch I waited and after about 10 minute they finally came and asked if we had received everything. They had forgot to put my order in the system. They claimed the bread batch had to be redone. When I did receive it, the bread was not very good.

Dear Ann W, I'm Kim, the owner, and I'm very sorry to hear that our staff did not fill your order correctly and speedily, even leaving out items for your group. If it was this past week that you came in, we were training two new staff members. And though that's no excuse, we are working hard to train our new employees and help them to fill every order accurately from the start. Because you didn't have the experience you'd hoped for, we want to make things right for you, as well as the other members of your group. Our accounts manager, Staci, can be reached at amesia@greatharvest.com. Since we can't contact you directly via TripAdvisor, please reach out to Staci and she'll get you a complimentary sandwich with a bread you like, and the service will be quick! We work every day to improve our customers' experience, and your opinion matters to us. Thank you for sharing with us your experience so we can improve. We hope you'll give us another chance to impress. - Kim

I went for lunch and the Dakota bread was good, but the chicken salad had much to be desired. I saw the big cinnamon rolls so went back the next day and purchased one. That was a big mistake. The frosting really leaves a bad taste in your mouth and in the center of the roll not completely done. They are not worth the $3.00 for their big sized roll. Over all I was not impressed with the things I have tried.I would probably not go back again.

Thank you for your helpful feedback, Amy. I'm very sad to read that the cinnamon rolls were't fully baked the day you visited. I'll talk to the bakers about your thoughts on the frosting. The cream cheese we use may be too tangy. We're glad you enjoyed the Dakota bread. We mill our own wheat for Dakota bread, which means there are no preservatives and the whole wheat flour is utterly fresh. We think our fresh milled flour makes all the difference in our breads! We do hope you'll come back to try other sandwiches. Our Spicy Apple Bacon sandwich is a customer favorite, and I really like our breakfast sandwiches made on freshly baked biscuits. Either way, we're glad you gave us a chance. If you do end up back in our bakery in the future, you can bet we'll be working even harder to earn your business.

Have had many satisfying family lunches at this restaurant. However, I recently tried to use curbside pick-up there. I arrived at the appointed time and phoned in. My message went straight to voice mail. Apparently no one inside checked my message, so I waited for over 10 minutes. In frustration, I went inside for pick-up, despite the risk. In addition, both my wife and I agreed that our sandwiches -- which we have ordered many times before -- were not up their usual quality. (NOTE: I would have sent this complaint to the manager by e-mail but apparently their e-mail is set up solely for orders.) SUMMARY: Don't bother with curbside pick-up. They don't have it.

We had a wonderful lunch with fresh baked bread and dessert yummies. The Pecan Pie thin was amazing. Our sandwiches were delicious.

We try to stop by every week to pick up a loaf of their bread not always the same kind and also picking up scones or cookies too. We sometimes have soup and a sandwich if we are in there around lunch time.

We stopped with our 3 and 7 year-old on our way home from Colorado. We were craving something healthier than standard interstate exit options. What a gem of a place! Fresh-baked bread where they grind the wheat themselves. The tomato basil soup was the best I have had. I also had the turkey melt and it was so fresh and flavorful. The Asiago basil and raisin cinnamon chip breads are so good! Definitely make the drive from the interstate if you’re in town. You won’t be disappointed!

Just visited this cafe that has only been open for 4 months. The owner is super friendly and loves to greet patrons and offers samples of any of the day's offerings. Their pecan bar was scrumptious. My husband tried the cranberry scone and we also bought some chocolate biscotti's to take home. The atmosphere is relaxed, airy and well lit. They also have a private room one can reserve. We will definitely be returning for sandwiches made on one of their great breads and I will be ordering rolls for Thanksgiving.
