The chicken was moist and tender. The mashed potatoes were good. The salad was wilted, the bread was good. We had a problem with the bill. The waitress shortchanged us by 10.00. Hopefully, an honest mistake but be aware.

I called to place an order for pick up like I have done numerous times as I work a quarter mile from here. I pick up dinner on the way home because it is convenient. I frequent this restaurant all the time. I call as...I usually do and asked to place an order this was at 445 pm and told them I would like to pick up at 715 pm and the only thing I was told was we are taking no more orders. Nothing else just dead air. I only wanted to order 1 appetizer and 1 dinner but I got nothing including a I am sorry or kiss my butt. I unfortunately have a gift card that I need to use or I would not come back I will drive so I don’t have to use this place again.More
We have been going to Castelli's since 1980's and have never been disappointed. I remember the first time my uncle took my husband and me there. I ordered the Half Chicken then and my Uncle's eyes got wide and he laughed, "You've never had the...fried chicken here before?" We were cruising looking at the Fall Foliage along the River Road and decided to stop....Fast, courteous service, delicious food and plenty of leftoversw. The chicken was hot and fried to perfection.More
We went there for a family dinner. Even though they were crowded, they accompanied us very quickly. The food was good. The portions were large. And the service was excellent. Mike was our server. He did an excellent job. He even gave the children sherbet...because they were well behaved, unlike children that were at another table nearby. Highly recommend.More

My first trip here was in the 1960s. It's gotten much bigger, but still relies on chicken for much of its business. Guess one could say it's an old standby. The portions are huge, especially chicken, and it's good! Went there with relatives and it's...just like an old shoe; fits just right. The server was good, and cheerful. Some of their items could be freshened up a bit (green beans, salads were ho-hum, but overall another wonderful experience.More
Thank you for the great review! We're glad you still like the chicken - its been a secret recipe in our family for generations! We look forward to seeing you again in the near future!
When I was living in Collinsville, Illinois, and working in St. Louis in the mid-1960s, I was invited to attend a reunion at Castelli's Restaurant at 255 in Alton. I never forgot the experience...the food, the service, the atmosphere. So 55 years later, I couldn't...pass up an opportunity to make a return visit. Things haven't changed so much. It's still all about the food, the service and the atmosphere. Located at 3400 Fosterburg Road, Castelli's opened in 1937. Today, the family's fourth generation is running the kitchen and dining room, which seats 325 at a time and accommodates more than 800 on a Saturday night. While Castelli's is best known for its fried chicken which is ordered by 70 percent of the clientele, the steaks, seafood and pasta also put smiles on the faces of hungry and discriminating customers. My wife and I started with shrimp cocktail, home-made toasted ravioli, Italian tortellini soup and a Chef's salad, lettuce topped with ham, turkey, cheese, tomatoes, peppers and a hard-boiled egg with the Roman house dressing. For an entree, my wife chose baked lasagna covered with the house's milanese sauce and topped with provel cheese. In my quest to discover the best plate of spaghetti and meatballs in Chicago, I strayed off the reservation by ordering Castelli's version with Bolognese sauce. Excellent. Besides the signature fried chicken, other popular items on the menu are the eight-ounce center cut filet char-grilled with sauteed onions and served with four breaded jumbo shrimp and the eight-ounce salmon filet char-grilled with sweet onions and bell peppers and served with a baked potato and green beans. For dessert, we indulged in two large portions of home-made bread pudding. Like I said, things haven't changed at Castelli's in 84 years. The food still tastes as good as it sounds.More

There were five of us for a casual birthday supper. Heather L was our server and find a very nice job. Drinks were brought yo the table immed and for those drinking water a carafe of water and ice was also placed on table. Bread,...crackers snd whipped butter was delivered soon after the drinks. Shame bread was not warm! While this is an Italian Restaurant it is primarily known for its fried chicken which looks outstanding. Four of our party in fact ordered the fried chicken in various size orders. All of the pieces appear large and the breading was announced as outstanding. With dinner you get 2 sides and for us they ranged from a salad either very good Mayfair type dressing, broccoli, fries, green beans. The remainder of the party ordered the grilled pork chops. Mistake. They were thin, very dry, took a steak knife to cut them. Additionally Worcestershire sauce was finally asked for for some type of flavor. Should have had the chicken. Without the pork chops this review would have been 4 stars.More
Thanks for the review. We hope that you enjoyed your meal, but it looks like there is some room for improvement. We thank you for your feedback and hope that we have the opportunity to serve you again!
Both finicky kids cleaned their plates of spaghetti. My lasagna was fabulous and filling. Husband said livers and gizzards were great!
Thank you so much for your five-star review! Our team always strives for the highest standards, and we're happy to know that our hard work came across to you. We hope to see you & the family again soon!
Nice tables and booths. Great waitresses. They serve the best fried chicken in the Universe and with a side of fettucine served in a bowl topped with browned Mozella cheese.....to die for. Ask for skinned chicken and you will have crust with every bite. You...will want to eat every morsel of the tasty crust. The house salad is delicious and unique. Wine or beer and perfection. The steak chicken combo is the best of two worlds. This is our most frequented restaurant and has been for 50 years.More

Arrived for lunch and we were seated immediately. Friendly staff and clean facility. I had one of the lunch specials of salad and mostaccioli along with garlic bread. The food was very good and served quickly. The waitress was very attentive. They have several lunch...specials that were less than $10. They are noted for their fried chicken which I have had in the past and it is very good. Great place for lunch.More
I knew this place many years ago as the "Moonlight," long before Hwy 255 was built. I was in Alton for my high school reunion, and I wanted to treat my wife to a great dinner. I really like the "rural" setting of this place......sooo peaceful out there. The place has a "classy" feel to it when you go in (but fear not... it is "casual dress," for sure.) My wife and I both enjoyed our meals. Our server was very attentive, informative, and pleasant. BUT... after we had "settled in" to a nice, large booth, we realized... the service door to the kitchen (or dish washing area) was located just to the side of our booth. Many times during our meal we could hear the "ka-thunk" of tubs of dishes being moved around. I could even "feel" slight vibrations at my booth with some of the "ka-thunks." The bussing crew also sure did like to TALK LOUD back in that corner while shuffling dishes into the service area. I'm thinking that not only our booth, but also the two tables located on that side of the room had the noise factor hitting them (but probably not the "vibrations" I encountered.) So... my suggestion is you do not accept seating directly on your left as you enter the dining room. Oh... yeah... one other thing... if you dine too close to closing time, you will find the staff will begin their carpet-sweeping routine in the dining room before you are finished eating. But, rest assured, you will enjoy the food!More

God Bless GOOGLE for helping me find this location as it was DEF off the beaten path for travelers! Parking spaces were plentiful and handicapped accessible! Got there before the dinner rush (thank goodness) were seated promptly. a basket of fresh bread and crackers to...keep us busy while waiting for our supper. There was servers all around, some to clear tables, some to bring water, some who i only saw walking around... what was slightly lacking was a waitress who could refill my drink. The place went from only a few folks to no empty tables in a short time, and our waitress didn't come back for a bit. thankfully i had a glass of water to drink in addition to our soda. *Note this is not a unlimited refill place, menu said limit of 2 soda refills. It doesn't say so anywhere, but you pay your waitress at the table and NOT the hostess at the little stand on your way out!More

The fried chicken and salad are worth the trip to Fosterburg. Although they changed management, the recipes have stayed the same. The chicken is crisp on the outside but tender and moist inside. The homemade salad is so delicious and fresh that you could make...a meal out it and the bread.More
