“How delicious was that huh?" asked our waiter who passed by and didn't even bother to listen to my response. "Not really" I replied, but he was long gone. He never planned on listening. When we started ordering, we asked the waiter for recommendations. His...response was “you can’t go wrong! You’re in for a treat. If it's on the menu - its good!” That sounded reassuring - but we needed help choosing not a sales pitch. So I Ordered the Poke which turned out to be tuna on slaw with way too much vinaigrette. Could not finish it. When the waiter took it - he didn't ask why I hadn’t finished it. I then continued to the macadamia crusted catch of the day (Mahi Mahi). When the dish came there was a very fishy smell. The fish was not fresh at all, and very dry. It was served on purple sweet potato puree - which was very heavy, lumpy and starchy. It was smothered with some kind of sauce that was overly sweet, and a side of salad made of pineapple and onions. It was a bad dish - terribly executed. I could not eat the dish, lost my appetite and just left it on my plate. That's when the waiter came to ask “How delicious was that huh?” and walked away before he could hear my reply. When we got the bill - it really stung. so much money for such low quality food and service - this place has single handedly won 1st prize at the worst possible price to value ratio I have ever had in a restaurant. I had a bad experience here and will not return.More

This restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, literally in the middle of nowhere, but certainly worth the effort. There is outdoor seating for the unvaccinated. The indoors has an open kitchen with a large seating area. There is a full bar and the...wine list is nice and reasonably priced, particularly for Maui. The menu is new Hawaiian, which is fairly common nowadays, but this is where it started. They still do it better than anyone. My kids love the crab pizza appetizer. The ahi poke is excellent, served on an Oriental salad that is an excellent complement. The popcorn shrimp is fun, served in a popcorn box with some popcorn. For dinner the macadamia nut crusted mahi is outstanding. The ribs are also excellent. Save room for dessert. The pineapple upside down cake is wonderful. We also had a bread pudding special that was fabulous. This continues to be one of our favorite restaurants anywhere and they haven't lost a step in 30 years.More

To say our entire group was disappointed by our Lunch at the Hali'imaile General Store is a great understatement. We went with a friend who had been there several times in the past, and it was excellent. This time, however, the food was mediocre at...best, stingy in portions, but expensive in price. My fish tacos were bland, with very little fish and even less slaw. They seemed to have a shortage on tortilla chips, as there were around 6 on the plate, and a very small portion of sauce to accompany both the scant number of chips and the bland tacos. My husband fared worse. He ordered the Caesar salad, which was also bland, and made the mistake of ordering a blackened fish for the top. I would estimate the total size of this $18 addition was no more than 3 oz of rather over-cooked, dry fish. The only dish that was decent was the pulled pork sandwich. Additionally, I would highly recommend not ordering the Tai Mai. I love Mai Tais, and was advised that their version of that classic was superb. It wasn't. I left most of it behind. I don't know what white pieces were floating throughout the drink, but I really don't like chewing my cocktails. I support the restaurant's mission of local foods, but I would advise them to look at the quality of the food, as well as the portion sizes. I don't need an overwhelming amount, and appreciate that too large a portion leads to a) over eating and b) waste. But what was served overall was not acceptable for what we paid. We don't plan on returning in the future. We'll head down to Mama's Fish House, which was exceptional!More

My husband & I went here after our pineapple tour. This place is beautiful, and rich in history. Everything tasted great. They have lots of options, especially if you have dietary needs. The portion size is lacking, and the price point is $$$ even for...Maui standards. If you want a high end meal in upcountry country- this is for you! If you’re traveling on a budget, skip this place in front of the truck on our way back to the beach.More

Katie Rose was an excellent server as well as the host with thr cool mask. If that didn't make our first night great after a 10 hr flight.... the food was even better. We ordered the crab flatbread pizza appetizer... GREAT. Then the Coconut Seafood...Curry was to die for. OMG. I just had the leftover for breakfast, which I had been dreaming about all night. Outside seating was great. Everyone was great. I don't think it can be topped... but we will see. Will defintely put it on my list WHEN we come back. MAHALOMore

Overall, it was good experience. The patio is covered which is nice; however the seating area itself seemed a little underwhelming. Ie: some tables had table cloths, some didn’t. It’s pretty bare with no decorative touches. Just tables and chairs. The food presentation is incredible...and servings are large. We found the taste and seasoning a bit disappointing. We added salt to our catch of the day and the green curry was a bit bland for us. My companion loved his ribs and fries though.More

I wouldn’t rank this place amongst the top restaurants on Maui simply because it doesn’t hit all the marks. The food was very good. I ordered the bone in rib eye special medium rare and though it came out rare it was still good and...given the number of overcooked steaks I’ve had I’d rather they err on the undercooked side. The problem was the service. We showed up ten minutes early for our reservation and were told it would be just a few minutes. So we stood awkwardly by front expecting them to call our names soon. Meanwhile we saw other people from the outside porch area being seated and I realized they had been waiting too. By the time we were seated it had been 20-25 minutes of standing at the front. There was no acknowledgment or apology for the wait, and no communication while we were waiting . The wait is understandable. Sometimes people take longer to vacate their tables and they can’t control that. My issue is with how they handled it. Instead of telling us it would be just a few minutes and leaving us hanging they should have suggested we enjoy the view from the porch or have drinks at the bar and they would come get us. Once we were seated our server was friendly and showed up quickly but then went incognito after taking our drink orders. It must’ve been 20 minutes before we ordered. The dining room is large and too brightly lit. It lacks any ambiance. So to summarize this place has good food, but mediocre service and setting.More

Our best meal in Maui. Fun location in Up Country next to the Pineapple and Distillery tours. The food was amazing and very creative. I had the “Sushi Napoleon” for appetizer and it was the most striking and delicious plate I’ve ever had - a...combination of contrasting flavors and textures that was amazing. And the macadamia nut crusted Maui Maui was amazing too. Inside is very noisy, but they have a big tent outside where we sat and that was so fun. It was a circus-like tent with lights strung up and a cool breeze blowing thru. This is our favorite place on Maui, we’ll worth the drive (and the country up there is quite beautiful).More
