We were staying at nearby Hanalei Bay Resort, and after six years living in Australia my husband was desperate for what he calls a ‘proper’ American breakfast. This place delivered in spades. Great eggs and hash browns, plenty refills of coffee, and a huge pancake to keep our kid happy. Sometimes you need a place that does exactly what it says on the tin - and the Wake-Up Cafe is that place. Loved it.

We were told they had the best french toast, so we went. You wait in line outside and there are three tables inside and three outside. We were lucky to have a nice seat on the porch and it was our first morning there. We got the french toast and the breakfast burrito with pork. The french toast is a cinnamon bun deep fried with sugar and comes with whipped cream and caramel. It's very rich. My husband, who does not like sweets, thought it was amazing. Me, who likes sweets, thought it was a little sweet. We split our breakfast, so the burrito was a good match to cut the sugar. There were tator tots in it which made it rather nice and crunchy. The flavor was very good. The people were lovely. It was good food and a very nice experience. Cute little place.

The food was really yummy, I had the kalua pork and cabbage and my wife had the chicken. The portions were huge, my wife and I probably could have shared a single meal. The restaurant does have a fairly immature atmosphere to it, probably not a great restaurant for families.

We tried Wake Up Cafe today, we should have read the reviews first and we would have passed on this place. Very disappointing and overpriced for what you get. $38 for two and poor quality. I said to my wife it tastes like the hash browns have freezer burn and were cooked yesterday. My wife said her bacon taste like it was cooked last week in old oil. The owner or the person who runs this place must not read any of their reviews. The place was empty while all the other breakfast places in this area were very busy, after reading the other reviews back in the car, we now know why. Reviews were very similar to what we just experienced. We looked at several of the menus at the other places and we could have eaten for half the price as what we paid. Based on how busy they were, food quality had to be better. When we travel, we always search out mom and pop style places to eat. Sometimes you win big and sometimes you lose and get places like this. We usually always read reviews and today we did not and just winged it.

This restaurant was the only bad experience we had during our 21 day stay. Zero Aloha in this place and I should have known the second we walked in and half the tables in the place were empty on a busy day. At the same time a breakfast restaurant across the street had a 45-60 minute line that literally wrapped outside their building, this restaurant had no wait and several tables open. We decided to have breakfast and while the food was ok, we did not come back again to give them our business. It is not the place to go to if you are looking for good friendly service while trying to enjoy a peaceful and happy vacation. I can see why most people opt to go to the restaurant a few steps away instead of this one even if it means waiting in line. As my family and I approached the restaurant, I realized that I left my mask at the hotel. We noticed everyone sitting at the tables in the restaurant were maskless (some eating/drinking, some were not and were just waiting for their food) so my wife asked me to sit down while she ordered since she had a mask. This way we would be respectful and remain compliant with the states orders. As I proceeded to sit down (in addition to the front desk lady yelling out that I needed a mask), a lady came out to approach me while I was seated at the table about not having a mask. I apologized to her and asked her if they had a disposable mask I could use since I forgot mine. She said she could sell me a mask, and I obliged with no problem. We wore our masks until our food arrived, and remained the only people (eating or not) that had to wear a mask. As I waited, I noticed a sign posted at every table that stated patrons did not need to wear a mask while seated. To be respectful and since I was asked, I continued to wear mine anyways. Before leaving I spoke to a young lady that worked there and gave her the feedback. Brought up to her attention that while the sign clearly said I was ok with not wearing a mask while seated, and there were plenty others in every table not wearing a mask, it was a bit rude, could have been approached a more tactful way, it was horrible customer service to force one patron to do what the rest of the restaurant was not doing (plus a little silly… if your intent is to keep everyone safer, you would have everyone in the restaurant wearing the masks. Not just us). At one point, we observed the same lady that I bought the mask from with her mask down to her chin while interacting with the rest of the staff members in the kitchen area. I then went to read the reviews of the place and read the owner’s rude responses to any negative comment and it all clicked. It appears she is under the impression that running a good restaurant is not tied to providing a good experience and service to customers. I hope the feedback we continue to provide will help her realize that they call it the “service” industry for a reason. If she doesn’t realize it soon enough, I’m afraid it will likely have new owners in the near future.

The churro french toast is one of the best things I've tasted!! A full portion is massive, so I recommend sharing or getting a half order. I ordered a full portion and could only eat half, but luckily I couldn't finish because my friends loved it so much that they ate the rest. The burrito was also very tasty! My local friends said this is a restaurant that they frequent and now I understand why!

The moment we walked into the Wake-Up Cafe we were met with a pleasant greeting and welcome in. The waitress served us almost immediately and our food took only moments to arrive. The Over the Falls special is the best french toast dish we had in all of Kauai. Last thoughts, the cafe is quite small and doesn’t seat that many groups, so get there early!

Is there any truth to the rumor I heard about the cinnamon roll no longer being served? This could stop us from going back to Kauai. Someone needs to get the chamber OC commerce involved if this is true. We arrived 5 min before closing and after a few minutes of crying and begging, they agreed to serve us the cinnamon roll. It’s better than almost anything!

We ate here pretty much every morning of our recent trip and saw no sign of the rudeness some have complained about. Be nice, be patient, and be prepared for some of the most delicious eats on the island. The Kalau (sp?) burrito is truly fantastic and big enough to split. We also tried the churro french toast which was massive and delicious—you'd need three people to come close to finishing it. Don't miss the tots. We had a wait some mornings, but you can get your coffee from the counter to tide you over. Big mahalo to the kind staff for making our mornings so bright.

I'm not a crazy loco moco lover, I don't crave it and usually have to be in the mood, but this one is crazy good. I was coming here for a shrimp dish (but their conversion away from their shrimp truck stuff makes it more limited) so I decided to go for the loco moco, it was amazing. So tasty with perfectly cooked well-seasoned hamburger patty, excellent rich gravy, egg and topped with onion rings. Everything looked good here, coffee was great (and popular take-out item)

The service and food were amazing!!! Seating outside was limited due to Hawaii’s over abundance of caution regarding covid, but totally worth sitting on the curb to eat. BEST Portuguese sausage EVER! The fisherman’s breakfast flavor is off the charts. Great place to start your day or trip in Hanalai

It was so good, we ate there twice. Hubby had the (huge) burrito and I had the bagel with egg, avocado and jalapeno cream cheese. There's not much seating inside, but it's worth going there, even if you have to do take out.

Huge portions of delicious take out breakfast food. My daughter and I shared the full order of churro French toast. It was decadent and we sadly could only finish half of it. So good. My other daughter got the egg, bacon and tater tots breakfast and said it was really good. We wanted to go back another day but ran out of time. Highly recommend. The little shop has really cute stickers and gift items. There are a couple of picnic tables in the parking lot and on the little porch off the cafe where you can sit. We took ours to go and ate down at the beach 5 minutes drive away.

Great food. We ordered the shrimp for lunch and both the coconut and the garlic were delicious. Also a great place for breakfast. The churro French toast was so good we came back a second time! (but keep in mind, a full order easily feeds two!)

The staff and who appeared to be the manager are the absolute rudeness people I’ve met. I’d steer clear of this place unless you like unhappy, disgruntled and overall sour people. Not a great way to start your day in such a beautiful place! Lady in picture is the culprit. Go see for yourself it’s almost comical. Note: I complete reviews often all over the world and luckily this is my 1st negative review.
