My parents and friends used to come here(I was 11-12). Vahls was hopping,it has slowed now, however, except from the big flood, the place hasn't hardly changed. I come here because, like CHEERS,I am greeted like family and not just another customer.Food is great and service is a treat.

When you walk into Val’s, you’re walking not only into Silicon Valley’s history, but also a place from the past. There really is no other place like this in the valley. The menu is unique and not exactly my to my liking. However, enough people...like the old fashioned comfort food (liver and other things that were popular 40 years ago) that this place is a landmark and place to go and see. What makes it special is the people and atmosphere. Again, unlike anything else I know of. The bartender knows everyone in the bar, the people in the bar know each other, there a piano player and locals regularly sing along to songs from the past. You really do feel like you’re walking into a place that might have been a frequent experience in my parents day but is rare (and missed) in Silicon Valley today. .More

I am delighted to find a piano bar in the mid San Jose area. You can be sure we will go here several times of year. The food is pretty good. They are an Italian restaurant. The decor is from the 70's but clean. We...came here for lunch, so we have not experienced any piano music there yet. We started with Mimosas.More

We looked up an old place that was well known within the business community of San Jose years and years ago and found out it was still open.... barely. What used to be a gem is now an old tarnished antique. The menu is so...limited, six items.... BLT, Club, hamburger, open faced roast beef sandwich.... you get the picture. The service was magnificent, and I felt bad because I could see her trying. Will not go back again.More

We went on a Sunday so it was fairly quiet. The food was just OK. Not bad, not good. The waitress was extremely nice and attentive. The piano bar looks like fun. We'll come back just for that but not the food.

Zombies would complete the picture. This place warmed my heart. The food was only ok, but certainly it could be eaten. The staff was engaging and professional. The decor was a serious throwback to the mid-fifties, as were the clientele, who have aged considerably since...that time. The thing is that they have live karaoke, with an ancient but able pianist, a guitarist, and a drummer. You get 10% off your tab if you sing. And the old folks get up and render tender and moving songs from that bygone era, made all the more tender and moving by their memories and frailties. It is waiting to be part of a novel, or several novels, but someone needs to get there and document it because this place will not be this way ten years form now, maybe not even in 2020, if I'm seeing that right.More

The food it's okay, but the amazing thing is that on Sunday afternoon and some more days you can have lunch while the people eating at the restaurant is singing.

I've been coming to Vahl's since my childhood. Fortunately and unfortunately, not much has changed since then. Great place for resurrecting memories of the 50's and 60's, complete with the bold, flowered wallpaper. Food matches the decor with old school basics. The unfortunate part is...the same, depending on what you're looking for. REALLY need to rework the menu and the decor if total nostalgia isn't your idea of a satisfying dining experience.More

Vahl's has changed little over the past 50 years. The furniture, the decor, the guests and staff are timeless classics. Their bar and pool table are dimly lit and frequented by a friendly group of regulars. One dining room is used on Friday evenings for...live hits of the 1940s played and sung by people who were young at that time. It is also one of the few restaurants around where you can order dishes like rabbit, liver, or a squid fillet. Their appetizer platter comes with pate, olives, and other classic European bites. The garlic bread, by contrast, is made with fluffy American white bread. Come on Friday or Saturday nights after dark to see the classic bright neon sign, right out of the 1950s.More

I love Vahl's because even though the food is kind of mediocre, it is the atmosphere of a once glamorous restaurant still holding onto what it once was. White tablecloths, formal settings, a fading grande dame. They are so behind the times that they cannot...run a tip on your credit card. Which was embarrassing, as then my date and I carried no cash. We asked her to run the card a 2nd time for a tip. Couldn't do that either. Warning: call first. Even during their posted business hours, they may be closed! note: This is a very historical restaurant in Alviso, end of the bay. The area is bleek. It is worth the trak for sake of adventure.More

Despite the less than attractive exterior and the rather dated interior, the food is fantastic and there is plenty of it. Frank, the bartender has been there for a long time and is quite an interesting fellow to talk to. The waitresses are very attentive...and their recommendations (especially the carrot cake) are spot on. Love this place!More

The food here is delicious. I have to admit that the outside appearance and inside ambiance leaves much to be desired, but the friendly service and delicious food more than makes up for it. If you go definitely order the steak sandwich, it is DELICIOUS!!!

Time has stood still at Vahl's. Great menu, great service, great prices. Most of the waitresses have been there for decades. Want to feel like you were in the early 60's going for a great meal then go to Vahl's
