This was my first time in Washington for over two years, so decided I deserved to celebrate. Blue Duck Tavern was definitely up to the task. We sat on the front patio surrounded by flowers, birds and a fountain. The broad umbrellas provided shade. The...freshly squeezed orange juice was a treat, and my glass of Albarino was crisp and cool. We had the special mushroom soup, artfully poured from an earthenware kettle. The braised short rib was tender and juicy. The two large Duck legs confit were heavenly. The accompanying greens and rhubarb sauce were perfect. A pinot noir from Oregon complimented the Duck. A salad of greens and grilled asoaragus were appropriate sides. To wrap up a wonderful meal we had the grapefruit posset with layers of citrusy flavor and tapioca. Service was impeccable. While prices are on the higher side, this was expected as the purpose was to enjoy a special meal.More

I was really excited to try this restaurant given its Michelin status. We had breakfast here several days as we were staying at the hotel. Finding one's way to the hostess is a literal maze. The host staff were consistently pleasant and welcoming, however, that...is where the service ended. Once seated we were waited on by folks who seemed to just tolerate their jobs, not once, but each day. No smiles, curt answers. When asked if the grapefruit juice was Ruby Red (that is often what Hyatt serves), she replied with "I don't know". I tried a little more and asked if it was bright pink. "Yeah, it's pink" was the answer. I said, "If it is Ruby Red, I would like some." When it arrived it was not Ruby Red. There was no check in to see if it was indeed what I wanted. I had to call her back over and apologized and explained that it was not the kind I wanted and asked very nicely asked if she would replace with orange juice. She did, but I felt like I was really putting her out. The next day when I ordered a croissant, the waiter asked, "plain?' I thought he meant plain as opposed to an almond croissant or such. When he brought it there was no butter or jam. The day prior, the croissant came with these normal condiments without needing to ask. It seems there would be consistency in how things are served. I wasn't looking for a friendly diner, but some smiles and warm service are always appreciated especially for a restaurant that is supposed to be top of the class! And, "I don't know, but I will find out" is always the correct answer. Generally food was good, but the pancakes and the French toast were dense and oatmeal bland. Stick with savory dishes- or better yet, save some cash and get better service by finding another place to eat.More

Soft lighting, great service, everything tasted good but note it is expensive, although good D.C. hotels may all charge this much. The coffee/chocolate/caramel dessert was yummy.

We went for Sunday brunch. Awful experience. Our initial server was cold and rude; he obviously did not want to be at work. His mode of interacting with us was to walk up to the table and stare. When engaged he had robotic responses. He...just seemed pissed to be at work. The level of service he offered certainly did not fit a restaurant of this price point or image; more importantly, though, his style of service would be unacceptable anywhere. When ordering, we asked about nuts, since one member of the party had a nut allergy. We got from the rude server a rude and non-specific response about if the nuts could be removed from the pancake dish, ultimately being told, "Well, if you're allergic, I'll have to ask." We also ordered a basket of pastries as an appetizer. Later, the food was served. The pancakes were served alongside nuts. The pastries didn't arrive. This was all handled in a poor and chaotic fashion by a staff who never uttered, "I am sorry." At this point, I went to the hostess stand and asked to speak with a manager. The hostess just stared at me, befuddled, as if a manager didn't exist. Another member of staff, to his credit, did then take action. However, the initial reaction was to tell us the rude server--who stood sullenly in a corner--was "not normally like this," which was not a particularly helpful initial reaction. Only when staff was told firmly, "fix this," did we get nut-less pancakes, have pasties delivered (well after main courses), and have an (actual) manager stop by to apologize. To the manager's credit, that apology was sincere, and the restaurant reduced the bill, which was appreciated (and warranted). But it would have been better if we had just had a nice brunch. I understand that mix-ups can occur, but the mix-up with the nuts in combination with shockingly subpar and unprofessional service was just too much, especially when brunch for three (with no alcohol) costs above $100. Bad experience.More

OK, blame it on Covid. Or whatever else you want. But, in my experience, the Duck ain't what it used to be. We were there for lunch. I was looking forward to the meal because it had been what seemed like forever since we last...were there. My wife began with a butternut squash soup. It was above average, but was heavy -- a lot of cream it seemed -- and a bit too acidic for her and me. She offered me the balance of her bowl -- about 65% of the original -- and I had two spoonfuls. The server asked if we were done with the soup. We said "yes," and he took it away without asking if, perhaps, dissatisfaction was the reason for so much not consumed. Next course: My wife had the chicken and I had carrot cavatelli. The chicken was dry, verging on tasteless. About 80% went uneaten and, again, the server did not inquire about our satisfaction with the dish. The cavatelli was good, but somewhat heavy, given the nature of the pasta. And that, with a glass of wine, took the total to just about $100, not all that dear for a really good lunch. This wasn't it. Maybe we'll see improvement with time.More

Had had many good meals in the past which is why I returned with my work team. Very disappointed in the quality of service. While the food was still quite good (Had the Burrata as a starter and Duck as main course.) I felt like...this was a cafeteria/mess hall. My guests were barely finished with their first courses when the clanging and banging of taking the finished dishes were interrupting the conversation and frankly making my guests who were still eating, feel rushed. The bread plates were removed with the first course plates and when I discreetly pointed that out, the server answered "just use your dinner plate for the bread" (I know, clutch the pearls LOL). It was just messy. When the main course arrived, the guest to my right was given my dish, so when I politely said "oh this is mine", server just reached his arm across my face to drop the dish to my left. It was all very sloppy. Some who read this may think I sound picky, but for an evening out with colleagues at a place I remember being fond of, I was really disappointed. Honestly, for that kind of service, I should've taken my team to a diner.More

As per DC regulations, our vaccine record was checked upon entry. We had requested a quiet table as we had things to discuss with our friends, and we were led to one of the glassed-in tables that the Blue Duck Tavern already had even before...covid. Service was calm and very pleasant, attentive but not overbearing, we didn't feel rushed. After a round of drinks we ordered the duck, the crab cakes and a chicken dish, plus several sides to share including a salad and the fried cauliflower, everything was excellent. Just a really nice and relaxed evening.More

My wife and I found ourselves, for the first time, free and on our own for Thanksgiving. After a thorough online review of turkey day options we selected Blue Duck and were looking forward to holiday dinner. Well, I must say that although we had...high expectations these were exceeded. We had a delightful total dining experience. The restaurant is lovely , the service we experienced from all staff members was exceptional (knowledgeable/helpful/friendly) our server "Pelin" was amazing, every item we tried on the menu was outstanding. The breads and home made butter was wonderful. The crab cake appetizer was delicious with tasty chunks of crab my pumpkin soup was beautifully placed into the bowl and it also was ultra rich and wonderfully delicious. My wife had the prime rib a bountiful portion well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I discussed my selection with Pelin and settled on the turkey based upon her description. I received three thick slices of white meat and one piece of dark. The meat was so tender that I really didnt need a knife. Don't know how they seasoned it but the meat had a wonderful taste nothing that I have experienced over many Thanksgiving's. My stuffing and cranberry's were also very good. The shared mashed potatoes were rich and creamy. I passed on the lovely green beans. Dessert plate contained three items, one plate we shared and the other we took home. Wonderful desserts! We had a bottle of Moet, which we love, and it was reasonably priced.More

We stayed at the Park Hyatt for 3 days under the FHR program and were given $40 credit per person per day for breakfast. This turned out to be perfect because the Blueduck serves up some delicious breakfast. We particularly enjoyed their French Toast, Pancake...and the homemade granola with fresh berries. The avocado toast was OK, but nothing spectacular. All that being said, the food was definitely not reasonably priced and if we didn't have the breakfast credit, this might not have been a tenable breakfast situation. Do give a place a try for the ambience and the food, but you may not need to return for seconds.More

We wrangled whether this should be 3 or 4 stars because it is more of 3.5, but given the improvements since our last visit, especially with the food, we round up to 4 stars. We’ve visited Blue Duck Tavern through its several ups and downs...over the years. In late 2019, Blue Duck Tavern lost its Michelin star. This aligned with our thoughts (and review) during our last visit in 2019. The food has markedly improved since our last visit. Everything we ate was solidly prepared and it’s obvious the restaurant focuses on the selection of the highest quality purveyors (not just something printed on the website like many restaurants). The standouts were the duck (as it should be : - ) ) and the charcuterie plate. The duck was juicy, tender, and uniquely smoky- a pleasure to eat. Our charcuterie was extremely flavorful with obvious care in the restaurant’s selection. The kale cucumber salad (also a great starter) gets high marks for piquing your appetite for the meal. Service was overall good. We received the right amount of check ins and our salad was split into two plates which was a nice touch. However, the meal started off a little unpolished with awkward explanation of off the menu items and poor communication between server and the reservation about our lactose allergy which could have been smoother. This raised my concerns about service execution but smoothed out over the meal. For the price, we had one cocktail, three glasses of wine, two starters, two main dishes, and one side. We were adequately full and passed on dessert (probably too much bread). The total price including tax and tip was about $300. The value is overall OK and would be a bigger fan if Blue Duck can up its service game. However, we would return again for the duck.More

Make no mistake. If you've been to the Blue Duck Tavern in years passed, the food and service were cutting edge. That is no longer the case. We visited during the pandemic and noticed a severe drop-off in quality. We returned this past week to...learn that this appears the new normal. Let's hope it returns to its once proud self. Otherwise, there are too many good choices in DC at better price price points to consider this an option.More
