Situated on the edge of Georgetown University's campus, The Tombs is a neighborhood restaurant by day and a popular gathering place for Georgetown students by night. Along with 1789 and F. Scott's, The Tombs rounds out a trio of restaurants built in a Federal-style townhouse dating from the mid-1800s. When Georgetown alumnus Richard McCooey founded The Tombs in 1962, he named it after a mention in T.S. Eliot's poem "Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town." Whether its students watching a Hoya basketball game, Georgetown alumni sharing a pitcher of lager or neighbors enjoying Sunday brunch after visiting Holy Trinity Church, The Tombs traditions run deep.

We chose this restuarant based off of it's website and past reviews after visiting DC for the day, and we were not disappointed. Our server was quick, knowledgeable, and friendly. Food was moderately priced and tasty. A must see when in DC.

A very unique place, with nice decoration. Food is also very good. Simple but tasty, ideal to accompany a drink. Staff is very friendly and helpful. We arrived 4 minutes before the kitchen closes and they served us with a very good attitude. Would definitely...More

We came before the rush in the lower back part of the restaurant, which was nice because too loud around the bar area and seating. A family at the opposite end was not thrilled with their arrangements that the dad was visibly ticked off about...More

We had dinner here this week. Good service. Cozy ambience. Basic menu. Coffees and teas were not hot. Average food quality. For two entrees and an appetizer and coffees plus one wine, over $48. Seems high for the basic menu and average quality.

I've been visiting The Tombs, on and off, since the mid 70s. Plenty of fond memories. Great food, great prices, great ambiance, great staff (vastly improved since the time I lived in DC in the early 2000s), great location. Totally unpretentious, compared to many of...More

Visited The Tombs while on college tours with my child. Had a few people recommend this place. It was good but not great. It is located in the basement (tombs?) of a townhome. It is more spacious than it would appear with a nice sized...More
