This delightful bakery and restaurant was less than a block away from my hotel during a recent business trip to DC. Hungry for breakfast on the morning I arrived, I settled into an al fresco table, ordered the brunch (an entree, plus pastries, plus coffee and juice), and prepared myself for culinary happiness. The food didn't disappoint. A lovely spinach... More

Well okay, maybe the ambiance would've gotten 4 stars if we'd sat outside, but it was too chilly. What I really don't understand is how others' experience of the service and food could have been so different from ours. The food, especially, was really, really good. We both had the spinach and chevre omelettes, and they were delicious (among the... More

We've been going to Bread and Chocolate for 35 years and, though we now live in North Carolina, we still enjoy breakfast there when we're in town. Maybe it's because we've enjoyed the same staff all these or I have my favorite birchermuesli every time I'm there or the fact that we've had hundreds of jolly breakfast with family and... More

I visited this outfit twice in October. Service was iffy on both occasions with either princess waitstaff types or just not particularly interested in working there. I mean, if I want rude and condescending attitude I can get plenty of that at places whose food is actually worth it and where at least my requests are taken seriously. It could... More

The restaurant refused to do substitutes (not even for an up charge). The potato latkes tasted terrible. Service was not good, had to remind the waitress serval times to bring me what I had ordered. And the food quality was not good. Will not be going back.

We had and excellent breakfast here. The espresso was wonderful. The kids really enjoyed the French toast and the adults sa ores the omelettes. It was too early for dessert, but the ones in the cases looked great. The style was very modern and the service was excellent.

We went for lunch, the Spinach and goat cheese quiche was very good so was the egg benedict. We went back for breakfast the next morning, had brioche, just like in France, the croissant was ok, the mousseline was very nice and not too sweet. Coffee is not so good, kind of tasteless The staff is very sweet and makes... More

Bread & Chocolate has been around since the 70's, and it hasn't changed all that much: same pastries, similar but modernized mix of breakfast dishes, salads, & soups; same pleasant mural in the back corner; same steep flight of steps down to the bathrooms; same mystery as to where the kitchen is (the waitresses must get a real workout going... I saw many folks sitting enjoying a relaxing meal outdoor in front of the restaurant so I decided to take a break and have lunch. I ordered the salmon salad and the chocolate diamond for dessert. The salmon was excellent and the dressing was wonderful. The dessert was fresh and pretty good although a little dry for my taste. The... More

We had a family brunch. The service was slow but ok when it is a nice day to sit outdoor talking. The staff were quite busy so it took a few reminders to get refills on coffee and water. But they were friendly. The food is unremarkable. The omelettes pretty standard. I had pear, cheese, and bacon on bread. A... More
