This is a nice bar and restaurant off 18th and M in DC. We were looking for a place on the Friday after Thanksgiving near our hotel to get with other members of our family who were in the area. We couldn't have looked more out of place here (a couple of 50+ year old tourists!) but felt comfortable and enjoyed our early evening beer. Not somewhere we would have chosen to eat, just because if seems more of a bar, but great for good...choice of cold beers.More
If on M street in the West End of DC, this is a serviceable spot to catch some of the game on tv, have a pint to break up the day. It was set up in traditional bar style, bartender and manager were very nice....Not a destination ‘must get to’ but if your strolling down the sidewalk, and get a thirst, stop in.More
I hate writing bad reviews but I feel it is important to be honest. Last week my family and I went to this restaurant to eat dinner however there was only one person working both the bar and seating areas. She has long braids in...her dark hair and seemed very flustered that day. No one in the place was eating any food and the back area reeked of mold. We sat and waited to order our food for at least 20 minutes while we watched her run around the bar and other tables to serve drinks. We honestly felt bad for her so we decided to leave but pay for what we drank. My father gave her money at the bar and she got angry. As we were walking out (after tipping her) my young children heard her curse at us and throw the money in the register. It was completely unprofessional and absolutely inappropriate for our children to see such anger from an employee. We didn’t want to add more work to her but her reaction was quite disgusting. Very disappointing experience on our family vacation.More
SOW has good beer tap selection. I ordered their burger with cheese bread and it was surprizingly good for a bar. Its a neat unique bar with a fun atmosphere. Overall food is great.
I went here twice in one day on our trip. The staff is so friendly and the bar is a great size. I really liked their french fries too! Overall, it was a great time. If you are looking to go out there are a...lot of bars in the area as well that you can hop around. The best part about this place is that they didn't have a cover charge when the other bars were already charging.More

My husband and I were visiting from Florida and we had been going high end for food and drink all week and we were looking for a chill place to have some beers and just chill out. Well, we found the place. The bartenders James...and G were awesome and made it feel like home! We only tried the chicken wings, but had them twice on two different occasions and they were great! If you are looking for a local dive bar to have some great well poured cocktails and beers, this is the place. If you are looking for something fancy this is not the place!More
We used a Restaurant.com gift certificate at Sign of the Whale. Often when we travel, restaurant.com is hit and miss....often miss. This time, a big hit. My wife ordered a grilled turkey reuben and I got pastrami. Honestly, I would have preferred to order corned...beef, but the pastrami was very good. Both sandwiches were huge....the biggest I have ever had. Plus, it came with a big order of french fries. The sandwiches were $12 each, so I had to order chili got get my bill up to $30. The chili was excellent too. Sign of the Whale is a bit of a dive, but still quaint and friendly....with excellent food.More
When we walked in it was kind of dark, but the eclectic decor grabbed our attention. There were some regulars at the bar who made us feel like family, and the bartender (James, I believe) was super cool and attentive. We had boneless wings and...mozzarella sticks, and both were some of the best we have ever had. This place is definitely worth checking out.More
Neighborhood gem/ dive bar to stop by to watch sports and have a bit to eat. Outside appearance is deceptive, located in a row house. Inside the food is actually declicious. Quesdilla had light cheese and plenty of veggies. Dips - Hummus was tasty and...had veggies and chips. Sliders- turkey melt was tasty too. Guacamole had chunks of avocado and fresh herbs served with chips. They can reduce no of chips with each serving.More
This place should run a bar only, i came here for brunch. It was very disorganized, so dirty and cluttered. The food was xoxo...i actually can make it better at home. It was a huge disappointment.
The bartenders are simply worth going to have a meal and drink with. Fun and inviting and so nice to not have rudeness. The pours are great and I had the chef come to me and ask if he cooked my meal correct? Who does...that? Awesome service. Hubby said best ever grilled chicken sandwich and his head is burning (he's not smart if he orders a hot sandwich, that's another story)oh, the prices?? Can't beat them. We are in DC! Unheard of reasonable!! This gets and A +++ rating!!More
Food was really good however the premises itself was very dirty and smelly (smelt like a night club). It was evident this establishment had not been properly cleaned in years - layers upon layers of dirt and cobwebs. Such a shame considering it's housed in...quite a nice building. So much potential gone to waste.More
Crappy beer selection in plastic cups? Yikes. Good burger, though. The staff was overwhelmed. The bar wasn't clean. I won't be back.
