We were looking to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown that had some atmosphere so we decided to try Tony Cheng's. We actually liked the fact that it seemed very 70-80's because that gave it extra character. We were impressed with how nicely the tables were set and had white tablecloths. A little pricey for lunch but we definitely over ordered. There was only 1 other person as a guest so it was like private dining. DC in general wasn't very crowded because we visited the week after inauguration.

We wandered in off the street past some shady people seeking shelter from the cold wind. Once we climbed the stairs we found one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. The roasted pork fried rice was perfection and easily was shared between us. The Cantonese duck was out of this world. Nothing we ordered was not perfect and seriously the entrance may have been shady but it was almost a nice portal to travel through to get this great food as a reward.

After visiting various restaurants in China town DC my friend and I came to the conclusion that the Chinese restaurants in China town are just okay. We came here for dim sum on a weekend. There were not a lot of people. The food is just okay and did not excite us. I hope they can work on the wow factor.

Upon entering Tony Cheng, I realized I was in a beautiful, classical Chinese restaurant with uniformed waiters and white table cloths. The atmosphere was quiet, as there were few diners at an early hour (5:30). The cocktails were very good, and our dinners were served with grace and ease. We had hot and sour soup (excellent), fried dumplings (good), spring rolls (excellent), chicken with broccoli (excellent), duck with asparagas (good). What I appreciated the most was the warm, welcoming atmosphere. And even though it's considered a seafood restaurant, it serves meat, vegetarian, and vegan options. I would definitely return again and again.

Went for lunch expecting Dim Sum unfortunately they no longer serve Dim Sum and the waiter informed us that no one serves Dim Sum in Chinatown, we ordered the fried Calamari very greasy but OK. Shrimp toast was also greasy and not anything like I have had before would not recommend. Steam Beef dumplings were very good. Fried wonton that wasn't greasy but with a sweet I think cream cheese in it, not what we expected and would not recommend. When we received our bill there was a 20% service charge which surprised us as we were only two people not a crowd. When he ran our credit card it came back with space for gratuity, don't understand that. When we were leaving a delivery man asked how it was and we said OK, he commented that he would not recommend Chinatown as a destination. He also informed us that there is a great Dim Sum restaurant on 7th and H or New York St. very good, very clean.

Such unpleasant staff. A smile could make a difference. Food ok, but no more. The tip will be mandatory 20% because they add it as service fee, which is cheeky. I wouldn't have tipped if it wasn't mandatory. The first plate was dirty. We had to ask for a new plate. Not recommended. Old venue. No! Not recommended. Worst restaurant in a long time. And you got in a bad mood because the staff was so grumpy.

The food was prepared excellently, and was served promptly. The wait staff was friendly and helpful and the meals were very tasty. We both had seafood dishes and shared them. The portions were very generous, and, although we were both very hungry after a long day of travel without any meals, we were unable to completely finish them.

We we in Washington DC tour our nation's Capitol city. We were on The Old Town Trolley Tour and the tour guide mentioned there were some good restaurants in the Chinatown district of DC. We found Tony Cheng's Restaurant. We saw where Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter had eaten there. We enjoyed our meal. It was authentic Chinese food. It was a memorable experience!

I do not recommend this place. Food is expensive, place will not match the price you pay for. We observed that the servings from other table is much more and larger than what we received. Dirty chairs and restroom.. dry ribs, dumplings have thick wrappers, greasy calamari and bad service and disrespectful from the waiter. hot tea is not complimentary.. Not a place that I can recommend even with my enemy..

We cannot recommend Tony Chang anymore. The hot pot was not even close to what I knew from China. It is more to be described as a meat pot with sauce. The restaurant mostly looks dirty. Unfortunately, it cannot be compared to previous days.

We wanted to grab a bite on our jaunt into town and this looked like a bet to be sure. After making our way up the stairs we were met by the host to took us to a nice table. We were served immediately. The wait staff was helpful and friendly. I ordered the birds nest - and it was amazing. Chock full of seafood, the bowl was made of dried noodles resembling a birds nest. After soaking up the juices of the meat, seafood and sauces, I ate the bowl as well. This was a great meal and the atmosphere was quite nice as well. I definitely recommend!

We happened upon this place in chinatown. We are extremely pleased with our attentive service and the quality of our meal. They have traditional Chinese fare in fine dining experience. Our meals were above average and the service was amazing. I would certainly recommend if you are in the area.

The process to get a table was unorthodox but we figured it out. When our # was called we were seated next to the tank with live crabs and lobsters. The kids likes that. For whatever reason they were understaffed on a Saturday night. It took 3 tries to get silverware and a trip to the bar for napkins. The food was good. I feel like we weren’t very welcomed there and were rushed out. This was my first time dining in Chinatown , maybe that’s the way it is ?? I asked for a beer while we were waiting and was told “no”...very odd to me.

My friend and I were looking for a place to eat. Originally, my friend wanted sushi but we were having a hard time finding a place. We found a restaurant and were heading there when Tony Cheng’s restaurant caught my eye. As a joke I told my friend how about we try this place. Which by the way Google maps didn’t show us this restaurant as an option. Anyway, I am glad we chose this place. They offer “family style” dinners and the food is great! This hole-in-the-wall was the best decision we made that night. I would give it a try. You’ll be very surprised how good they are.
