The service is real, you feel very welcomed when you come in, immediately we were offered the sampler, which was explained to us, a little taste of what the menu offers, i decided on the special, which was the goat meat, my friend got the tomato sauce and spinach, which all the entrees are basically a plate of food, served... I am very familiar with food from other West/Central African countries and living overseas, this is the one kind of food I miss so, whenever I pass through DC, I am always excited to find a great restaurant with similar dishes. Off the bat, as another traveler said, go for the food, not the ambiance. It seems as their name... More

The food is incredibly tasty, and very unique in flavor. Since we had never eaten this type of food (from Sierra Leone), the owner gave us a small sampler plate. Since we liked all 6 samples, he then created a large dinner plate with all of them. It included 4 different kinds of meet (all but pork). Don't expect a... More

Sumah runs a little neighborhood gathering place for West Africans, but with his excellent food and welcoming manner he has attracted a wide range of customers in search of something different. The restaurant seats 20 at simple formica-top tables, and the food is served in styrofoam containers which can double as a doggy bag. The pictures don’t do justice to... More

This place was great. This was my first time trying African food. It was so different than what I am used to. I am so glad we got to go here. The place is slightly out of the way from central DC and isn't fancy, but it is the experience we were looking for. The owner helped us get a... More

Very clean, delicious food, great service and reminded me of being in West Africa. Commfortable and pleasant atmosphere, maintaining the culture of West Africa, sharing a sampling of the entrees for first comers. This visit was certainly a real treat and I look forward to another visit. Well worth the money. Cheers to Sumah's.

This was my first visit at Sumah's, I also pass it on my way to Howard University so I decided to stop in. My best friend is from Liberia and I have always been a fan of Casava leaf and okra, its delicious! I can honestly say the customer service was EXCELLENT! I felt comfortable and at ease as they... I worked in Sierra Leone for over two years and after I left I never thought I could find really a place that served the great West African food that I loved so much. I saw Sumah's featured on CNN's Focus on Africa and being in town for business, I had to check it out. OMG!!!!!! If I closed my... More

Came for dinner. Very good food. Large portions. Friendly people and great service. Don't let the appearance of the restaurant fool you. It took a while to get the food but it was worth the wait. Free sampler plate was a great idea since this was the first time I've tried west African food.

Best surprise of DC, a taste of the citie's diversity. The sauces are a explosion of flavor, completly diferent of everything I've experientes before. If you are adventurous and like new experiences, that's your place in DC!
