OK FOR PIZZA...

Long time ago it was a top restaurant downtown. Right now just Ok for pizza, basic desserts and a glass of something. I would avoid pastas....Too pricey for what you get in general. Indeed a tourist spot - and not for gourmands....

Great Italian restaurant

The restaurant is easy to walk by. One must really know where to go but the visit is worth finding the way. The atmosphere is old and prestiged, once opening the main door, you walk into a bar. The restaurant is hidden upstairs and behind the bar, so walk right in! Hope you made a reservation, because this place is popular. The service is Italian version of friendly, which means precise, temperamental and fast. Food is really good, pasta is Al dente, and the amount of flavors in the dishes is astounding. We didn't have any pizza (as seen from photos), and can't say anything about those. Over all, the restaurant is good for families, couples and bigger groups. Especially for bigger groups, make a reservation. If you like Italian food, this place is worth a visit in Tallin.

Nice place, avoid pasta

Chose to have dinner in the place based on good reviews here. Should have read the reviews more carefully though and avoided the pasta like many other reviewers suggested. The place itself is nice with good atmosphere and good service, and the pizzas in the other tables also looked nice. However, the Spaghetti alla carbonara was barely a one star performance with its lack of taste, watery consistency and fatty uncooced bacon. Spaghetti Bolognese was better but still nothing to write home about: bland and boring. The place itself and service four stars, Bolognese two and Carbonara one star. Opt for pizzas instead.

Hairs in Vitello Tonnato and they cold not care less

This restaurant has really dropped down. The service was rude and food was not carefully made as in earlier years. The highlight was that we found long black hair in our Vitello Tonnato. I mentioned it to the waitress but she said nothing in response. They also did not offer us anything - we also had to pay the full price of the hairy-Vitello Tonnato. We will never ever come back!

I liked the restaurant and would have liked to have a birthday dinner there with 10 of my friends. we asked if this was possible, and if any kind of group menu would work. for the main course we wanted lasagna. I also asked if it would be possible to organize any kind of menu for €20 per person for the food, and that we would order the wines and other drinks on the spot, so that everyone could order what they wanted and we would handle the drinks with separate cheks. The restaurant replied that they do not serve pasta to a larger group, and do not write separate cheks. So we were not accepted as customers. If the reason had been stated to be perhaps the fear of the possible volume that a larger group can hold, I would have understood, but that an Italian restaurant whose menu is mostly pasta, pizza and risotto, does not serve pasta to eleven customers, and cannot write more than one check, I cannot understand that ! It's a shame, I liked the restaurant, but now will not be visiting there any more. But maybe it's positive that the restaurant is doing so well that it can choose its customers 🙂

We arrived without a reservation in the late evening and got a table next to the fire. The Pizza menu is not as expansive as some restaurants but the combinations are well thought out. We ordered the goats cheese pizza and the truffle salami pizza. Both were delicious. The ingredients seem to be of higher quality than other Italian restaurants around. The waitress was polite and attentive. We saw they also do delivery so I am sure we will order in at some point.

This restaurant is the best in Tallinn

We just love this restaurant, there has never been any bad experiences during the last 10 years, since we found this restaurant. Every time we come to Tallinn, just like last Tuesday, the plan was to come to Controvento and have a perfect three course meal, a cocktail and a nice bottle of excellent wine. We ate bruschetta, linguine with prawns in spicy cream sauce and finished with ice-cream in whisky & coffee. The service was friendly and fast as always, and we left feeling happy and knew, that we will be back to this restaurant again soon.

Friendly staff, lukewarm pizza, but good dough

I came in around 3 in the afternoon. I got seated pretty quickly by a friendly gentleman. I ordered d a pizza with spicy salami, which wasn't really spicy. I must admit I have a high tolerance of spicy food. I had to ask for some spicy oil, which I quickly received. The first thing I noticed was that the pizza wasn't hot, but only lukewarm. The same was true about the pizza of my partner. The dough of the pizza is quite good, although the sauce could use just a touch of salt. Had a very good desert, tasty ice cream in cold coffee and whiskey.

It was quite a trip to get to Restoran Controvento

Pizza guide Tallinn #11, Gunpowder boys. It was quite a trip to get to Restoran Controvento, Vene 12, 10140 Tallinn. The pizza we chose was the Calabria* EUR 11.00 Tomato sauce, mozzarella, terav salami, one of the two labeled as strong flavor. The staff immediately understood that we should have something crackling and extra chili arrived at the castle straight away. The pizza was perhaps a little sticky in the middle and the salami a little chewy. The service was top notch, scores 10 from both of us. The pizza, Ole 7 and my own score 8. Definitely a place to visit.

Authentic Italian Pizza

Excellent Italian Pizza with lot of flavours. I can highly recommend the pizza with salami and balsamico flavours. Also the Italian beer - Tipopils Pilsner, from the microwbrewery Birrificio Italiano, was a nice addition to the meal. Friendly service, and fine atmosphere. Full score for Controvento.

We wanted to give this place one more try, because it is so popular, but we have had only average experience before. This time we went there on a busy Friday night. We got a table next to the fireplace, so it was extremely hot to sit there. Really unformfortable, because the table was only about one meter from the fire. We were seated and someob threw us the menus, but did not ask if we would like to have something to drink. I am used to that in good restaurants guets are immediately asked what to drink, when the menus are brought. We waited and waited and finally I had to asku if we could order something to drink. The pizzas we ordered were quite tasteless, I would give 2* of the pizzas. I really don't understand the hype of this place. Staff was also really non-smiling. Someone reviewed earlier, that there were no fake smiles, that really is true :D I think we won't give this place a third chance.

We had lunch here and ordered fish. Grilled trout was very good. It was a bit difficult to find this place because the address is Vene 12, but the restaurant actually is on a narrow alley which starts at Vene 12. In italian restaurants there is no price for a portion, but everything ( food, salad etc. has own price ). Tasty food.

It’s hard to leave a place without eating the food, but salad was dress while I asked it to be undressed and pasta was so full of pepper to be uneatable. Every waiter may have a bad day and every chef may have a bad day, but if they both behave bad it means Manadgment is to be blamed. I paid, I left and now I’m waiting in another restaurant. Fellow food lovers only advise is to stay away.

Excellent food, pretty busy place. Nice service and friendly waiters. I had the fried goat cheese as an appetizer and it was really good. As a main course, light fish cooked in the oven, it was also good! All side dishes for the main dishes (potatoes, salad) are paid separately, but it's nice that if you don't eat them, you don't even have to order them. Good wine options. :) the place was so full that coats couldn't fit in the coat rack and also quite noisy due to the large number of people.

Great pizza, great tortellonis and great prawns. Our gluten free member of the party was treated well and he was able to dine as usual. Again, pizza was amazing, tasted quite the same as in Italy. House wine was excellent and the waiter was well educated on the food he served. Will visit again.
