I've never seen as many branches of McDonald's in prime city centre spots as I spotted strolling around Bratislava, but you can still find traditional local cuisine - both on the main tourist routes and further afield. I can't comment on the city centre locations...that trumpet their authenticity, but as Kozia Brana was only a short step from our apartment and seemed popular we thought it worth a go.
It's easy enough to find but you would have to seek it out, sitting on a corner location on a back street just outside the city centre.
The daily lunch offer looks a real steal but we were there in the early evening, and all we needed was a couple of plates and a couple of drinks to wash it down.
Dumplings, gnocchi and cabbage are prominent, and the presence of Moravian sparrow on the menu made for an easy choice - not a sparrow at all, but a pork fricassee affair served with hot sauerkraut and belly timber potatoes. Across the table was a jumble of chicken, gnocchi and vegetables which filled a spot but didn't display a huge amount of creativity.
The surroundings are traditional, the staff don't make a fuss if strangers stroll in even though locals seem to be the core customer base, and the prices are very reasonable.
Not the most memorable fine dining experience, to be honest, but good solid food at reasonable prices and not a meal you would be able to find anywhere else.More
