Getto Gulyas has garnered a reputation for delivering good value with its hearty traditional Hungarian fare and generous portions at reasonable prices. While the service is often praised for being friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming vibe, there have been a few less favorable mentions. Reservations are recommended by many diners to avoid a wait in this popular spot. The stylish and elegant decor enhances the sophisticated yet warm dining atmosphere. Although the goulash comes highly recommended, opinions on dishes like the chicken paprikash are mixed.

I was here the other night with my friend for a birthday dinner. We both ordered a medium rare T-bone steak, but when we got it we weren’t pleased with how it was cooked. After returning it, our waiter got us a new plate and the food was excellent. Because of the problem we had with our first plate that we sent back, we were compensated with a delicious dessert and a generous discount of the total price. We went back for lunch the day after and got us the best gulash ever. I will be in Budapest again this summer, and will DEFINITELY go to this great and calm restaurant again. I wanna thank the staff at Getto Gulyas for great service and of course your great lunch/dinner!

We first heard about Gettó Gulyás from our Air B n B host when we asked her for recommendations of places for dinner. This is one of her favourites. I love the pint of house made lemonade which is delicious mixed with berries (850 Ft). The Hungarian 'hortobagyi' pancake with mushrooms is more of a crepe stuffed with mince, onions, tomato, spices then topped with a paprika and sour cream sauce.Tasty! We've tried various paprikash dishes - all hearty and filling. The home made cheese curd dumplings with cinnamon sour cream happened to be our waiter's favourite. This came with three dumplings that had been fried, dusted with icing sugar, and sat in some thick sour cream. Surprisingly, the dumplings are light as air with a definite sourness from the curd but it's not overpowering. The sour cream is also toned down and actually quite sweet, paired well with the cinnamon. A great dessert idea. We went back a second time during our 3 days in Budapest to try the yummy goulash. Best to book a table in advance.

This is a traditional Hu restaurant covered with a modern atmosphere, truly means a great experience not only for foreigners, but for Hungarians also who live far from Grandma (as stew and paprikash is always best at her) or simply live a city life and tend to rather choose a Vietnamiese of Chinese restaurant during the week to have something special. I would highly recomment to give a try to our own tradirional cousine here. We have celebrated my brother's graduation this weekend at Getto Gulyas. The 7 of us got there without reservation at 12. We were very lucky to have a table. By 13.00 the restaurant got completely full of people with good reason.. Zsolt, our waiter contributed and assisted to our celebration with professionalism and humour. Roasted bone marrow is a must and we will definitely go back to try Curd Cheese Dumplings next time.

I’m Giving this place a 1* because I don’t think it’s current rating is a fair indication of the standards we experienced. The service was very arrogant and disinterested. While we there we saw so many people turned away due to ‘bookings’. We were there over an hour and a half and didn’t see tables filling up. I’m sure the staff could have gotten those people in and out within that time, but I think didn’t want to do any extra work that night, which was unfortunate for the customers that missed out. Food was really average and all dishes were served warm. We waited quite a while for our dishes but when received them, the temperatures were all quite cool. We had read that this was one of the best places to experience goulash, but were severely disappointed. Barely Any meat in the goulash, and what was in there was very tough and dry. Expected a lot better based on previous reviews, and due to such poor service, giving a 1*

As Budapest locals, we're generally wary of eating at the 7th district tourist traps. However, after reading the mostly positive reviews of Ghetto Gulyas, we decided to try our luck and see what the fuss was about. Bad decision. My partner and I ordered the chicken paprikash and the duck, both of which were so overcooked we could barely cut through the meat. The sauce looked like it was from a packet (as it got cold, a plastic-like film appeared on top), and the flavours left a lot to be desired. Our waiter, though, was absolutely brilliant. It's a shame because we wanted to like this place, but take it from us, it's not worth it. Visit Koleves instead.

We ve seen this place passing by. If you want to eat here, you wil 99% need to book in advance hence the restaurant is full most of the time . We ordered the Goulash, beef stew and knuckle stew. The beef and knuckle stew was somewhat above average but the Goulash was mostly average, condimente and water, potatoes carrots and meat . The prices are decent but theres a common thing in Hungary I guess, that the restaurant tips itself a certain % of the check . Clearly there should be hired at least 1 more waiter because the 3-4 ones couldnt manage the whole restaurant. On the menu there are only stews .

This is the sole restaurant in Budapest for which I had to made a reservation (over several restaurants tested in 3 days) so I expected this place fabulous. The place was crowded but not fabulous. The service was not great (no drink without asking, no suggestion, no explanation if you ask something, they read the menu for you - thank you I do not know how to read! - no candle for diner for solo traveler - silly perhaps but this should be part of the "care" of all customers) and the food is average. Moreover, I did not get the dessert I ordered (I suppose they had a problem since I waited for more than 20min and got a lemon meringue pie instead of a cheesecake, without any explanation!) In the end, service fee is not included and highlighted in pink on the bill, which is bad because what to do when we did not like it? We feel forced to (over)pay. It should be better for the restaurant to include a fee automatically like many other places in Budapest, where on the contrary the service is perfect. This last experience in Budapest is deceiving, fortunately all the other places were amazing and Budapest will remain one of my favorite European destinations!

Im writing this review after second visit to this place and I must say, this place is superb. We came here this time for dinner without reservations with little hope that they will have place for 4 people and we were lucky as the place was full of people but one place for 4 was empty. (Reservation recommended) The stuff was really nice and immadietly gave us the appetizers, which were delicious and took care of us perfectly trough whole evening. The gulyash (soup) was one of the best Ive ever had and chicken paprikash definetly was the best Ive ever had. After that we still had a bit of a room for dessert so we ordered somloi halusky which were flawless as well. To underline the quality and taste of food, one of us was comes from family with hungarian heritage and was in ecstasy of the food served here. In the end, I must say that this is definetly one of the best places in Budapest where you can feel like you are in the most posh fine dining restaurant and still pay (very) reasonable price. Will definetly visit this place every time Im in Budapest.

We went here with a bigger group and had a really good time, the place is nicely designed, a sort of paired down coziness which I really liked. The waiter was very efficient, we got a really quick service from him. The food was not to everyone's taste, some of it felt very low in quality and some dishes were only lukewarm. My beef cheeks were mainly fat and gristle, the sauce was quite nice though. Food altogether a little disappointing, we were hoping for fresher, punchier dishes. The one that stuck out was the steak, which was very well prepared. Everyone also loved the vast selection of palinka :)

We were able to get in without a reservation by sitting outside, but saw the couple sitting next to us barely touched their food and had the server take the plates away. We thought it was strange as we heard wonderful things about this place. About 30 mins later, we saw the same thing with the table on the other side of us. When we got our food, we realized the chicken was very bland, and the beef was insanely salty. There was no medium or thought put into these dishes it seems. They were just churning dishes out due to the high volume of guests. One server kept reiterating to people looking to get tables that there were no tables or reservations available because they are booked EVERY day, EVERY weekend, EVERY season. He said this to basically every family that asked to get seated. I get that the restaurant is popular, but it seems like people are just there for the atmosphere and not the food? So much food wasted from what we saw as all the servers rushed past us. Plus, ALL the servers are stressed out beyond belief being pulled in every direction. Our server was very kind, but you could tell he was stressed.

I'm a hungarian student and I have an american exchange student in my care and I thought this restaurant would be the best to show her the hungarian cuisine because I heard good things about it from one of my friend. However, I was really disappointed with the service and the food. The waiter didn't really care about us and was rude a bit, the food was average, my mushroom stew was over peppered, the dumplings were dry, we also waited a lot for the food. My exchange student liked it though, but as a hungarian I wasn't pleased.

We found this near our hotel when looking for a restaurant to try Hungarian cuisine and it did not disappoint. I had the beef cheeks, which was full of flavour, great service and the complimentary crushed duck starter was a nice touch. Service from our waiter Thomas, was great, very attentive and took time to explain what the dishes were. The bill was not too expensive, certainly worth looking at if you are near the Jewish Quarter.

We went there for lunch and food was so good. This place is amazingly well decorated. Service was excellent and nice. We had homemade lemonades, vegeterian and meat based dishes - all great and generous portions.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us so kindly. We are beyond happy to receive the maximum rating from such an experienced guest. We cannot find the suitable words to describe how happy we are by the fact that our restaurant managed to live up to your expectations! Moreover, it is an absolutely outstanding feeling to receive a compliment of our meals and the staff’s work at the same time. Thank you very much for choosing us, we really hope that you come back some other time in the near future. We cannot wait to see you again! Best regards, Getto Gulyás Management

We were looking for a good out of the way non-fancy place for some good Hungarian food and was lucky enough to stumble onto this charming place. It's a low key, down home type of place with very little frills. Small, cramped tables fill this small eatery but the portions of the food were very large. We had the rooster testicles and cockcomb stew and the chicken paprikash. Both were very tasty! As with most places in Eastern Europe, the service stopped once the staff member took our order. No one stopped by to ask us how the meal was or if we needed anything else. We also had to chase someone down to get the bill. But it's like that almost everywhere in the area and it was no big deal. If you're looking for good food will the decent pricing of a non-fancy restaurant, this place fills the bill.

My friend and I decided to visit this restaurant because we wanted to have some of the local hungarian specialities for lunch, and based on the reviews we thought the quality here is basically guaranteed, for so many people can't be just wrong. It was truly a fallacious argument. I must think those people who claim you can have the best goulash or paprikás here have no idea how it is supposed to taste, they just never had it before so they have no basis for comparison. The goulash was ok, but it was very plain and the bread they served was not fresh at all. The chicken paprikás was horrible, the meat was not soft at all, the sauce was very plain, the noodle (nokedli) had a disgusting texture I have no idea if it was overcooked or what happened, but my friend simply left it there he could not eat it. The beer was the best part of this meal. The place itself is not that bad, nothing specia either,l the interior design is ok, the restroom was not really clean though and there wasn't any soap to wash your hands with. The staff was rude, they did not outright offend us but they treated us like a burden, or some annoying thing, rolling their eyes when we asked something and such. We've booked the table in advance so I have no idea what was wrong. And after all this, despite the costs include 10% service fee the waiter kinda expected the tip. When we wanted to pay he simply put something on the table then left immediately. We had to call him back because wanted to pay with card, not simply leave some banknotes there. The staff did not deserve any tip anyway. It was my worst restaurant experience ever.
