This is one of those restaurants where I regularly return whenever I come to Budapest, a city I am not particularly fond of, by the way. What I had the last time was a kind of braised pork steak coated in a spicy flour mixture...served with fried potato wedges. As to the steak, it was just like a pork steak should be, the quality of the meat quite satisfactory, not too dry or chewy (poor quality pork tends to be too dry when fried or cooked). Of course, it was prepared in advance, otherwise you would have to wait for ages to be served, but braised meat reheated is just fine. The potato wedges, on the contrary did suffer some by the process of having got fried for a second time, but even thus it needs a gourmet like the author of this review to tell the difference. So far goes the sunny side of the picture. As to the shady side, first of all, I should mention the quantity. Well, a woman weighing a hundred pounds and watching her lines might find this portion satisfactory. For an average-sized guy, however, even if he had a copious breakfast in the morning, this is no more than a 2/3 portion at the very best. If you are really hungry, go for a double portion, you’ll manage it all right. Anyway, my remark on portion size was not meant to say it is too expensive. Not at all. For four euros you can hardly expect more, indeed. So that if you order a double portion, it is still a bargain. Still on the shady side, I should mention the soup which is thrust upon you with the menu most of the time and adds a euro to the bill. They are just instant soups, a different one for each day of the week, running under some fancy names that make your mouth water only to sharpen your disappointment when it is served. However, my goal with this review is not to decry instant soups, but to recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quiet place to sit and spend an agreeable hour or two with a drink, or have a simple but tasty meal. This being officially a coffeehouse (kávéház), ordering a meal is optional and you are welcome to just have a drink. (The coffeehouse category, by the way, explains the unsophisticated menu as well. After all, most establishments of this kind offer only pastries in the way of food.) Though it is situated in the very heart of Budapest, I have never seen this cafe overcrowded either by tourists or locals, which makes it ideal for anyone on the musing side, or for people who, like myself, like to tap away on their laptops to fill the idle hours when on the move. And one last tip: don’t miss out on the excellent ice cream they offer all year around in three flavours: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. My favourite is chocolate. Mmmmm!! It is just delicious! I got to leave you now and dig in before it melts.More
