We were looking for a restaurant outside the tourist area where we could taste typical dishes in an authentic atmosphere. What a surprise! Welcoming and well-kept place, very kind staff, typical traditional Hungarian dishes well cooked and well presented. I highly recommend it!

Delicious food, friendly service, reasonable prices, great atmosphere.
Breaded chicken breast, Rosé duck steak, white chocolate-raspberry dumplings, coffee - all of them were great. We will definitely go back to try other meals.

Feb 2022 • friends
6/2/22
We three British middle aged pescatarian guys are nearing the end of our week in BP. We were visiting our Hungarian friend who lives locally and I dined at this restaurant in July 2018, giving it 5/5.
Our friend booked us in for a late Sunday lunch at 15.00. I was wondering how it was after three and a half years with Covid still at large. After recycling some bottles in the main car park we arrived late at 15:20 to find a busy restaurant with mostly families. Our booked table was shown to us right by the bar. The friendly waiter offered us the separate food and drink menus and we chose our drinks first, unfortunately the bottles of Soproni Demon had run out so we had normal Soproni lager which was fine.
There was no English version of the menu so we had to rely on our friend and Google Translate live translation. Their website was also only in Hungarian only. After working through some very strange translations we eventually managed to order some dishes that we hoped would not have meat in them (as lardons/bacon bits tend to get everywhere, even in deserts!). The friendly and jolly masked waiters spoke English which helped.
I looked up my previous review and pictures, including the waitress who served our friend and myself in 2018. I showed one waiter who thought he recognised the waitress. I also looked up the extensive menu of those days which was also in English. Since covid struck they have refined it to a double sided laminated sheet. That suited us as one of our party is very indecisive.
The drinks came quickly as the other diners were well into their meals. The beers were good as usual!
We decided to have starters and chose three soups and the cheesy pasta dish. We also chose four mains, mostly fish based.
The first course dishes arrived in good time and were well sized. The mushroom soup Gombaleves 1190) was clear and proper wild mushroom tasting with no meat in it, excellent! Liver dumpling soup (Hagymaleves 1290) looked good and our local friend said it was excellent too. The onion soup (Husleves 1090) was unexpectedly creamy and very nice, not caramelised French style) and no meat!). My cheese and pasta plate (Sztrapacska 1490) was pushing the boat out for me and was substantial and very tasty, albeit it had bacon/lardons (clod) in it. We three Brits shared each other's non meaty dishes and agreed they were all good, although my friends thought the mushroom soup was a bit thin. A good start, however, to the meal!
The waiters waited patiently till we had all finished and cleared the table. Then the mains came in good time.
My crispy Trout (Pisztrang filet 3990) also ordered by our local friend was generous, very nicely cooked, not breaded (thank goodness) and was on a nicely flavoured lettuce salad with lots of walnut pieces in.
My friend's breaded deep fried Trappist cheese (Rantott Trappista 2890) accompanied by a white sauce was appreciated, although he was disappointed by the pile of plain white rice beneath. He admits that rice was on the menu so could have chosen something else. No meat though, a bonus!
Our friend had the grilled Salmon (Lazak steak 4890) and thought it was generous and good along with the baked vegetables.
Once again we three shared the dishes and agreed on the quality.
Being of a certain age the music was low key but a bit monotonous 80s. Our local friend explained that it was popular amongst the locals (who were also of our age and younger). If were in the restaurant alone at the beginning I would have got the waiters to change it to something more local, although if that's what the locals like!!! It is their restaurant after all and they kept it going through Covid times.
As we were half way through our main courses the restaurant emptied of other diners. We were alone but no pressure was put on us to leave, even at 16:20! In fact the waiter offered us desert which we declined as we were full. I was tempted but it was late. One of us wanted a pálinka but decided against as the rest of declined too. We ordered the bill and it was delivered quickly at 23780. Our most expensive meal of the week in BP so far but well worth it to be able to experience a good quality off the beaten track, local gem of a restaurant with few tourists.

Excellent food, friendly staff. Pleasant place under the trees in the city. Grilled goat cheese with walnut and peach salad was delicious!

The "Bad Squirrel" (if you trie to translate the restaurant's name) is something you would not expect among Óbuda's sober housing block area behind Florián tér.
Not far from an American fast food restaurant, you will find one of the most authentic and friendly places of Budapest: traditional Hungarian food, but always with some modern twist, is prepared always fresh and carefully. They have a basic menu and a seasonal one, which changes about every month, so you can enjoy game, goose and other Hungarian specialties whenever it's their season. The waiters are genuinely friendly, and there is always somebody to speak a foreign language (English, German, there is even a Russian speaking waiter). You will need this, because the menu is only in Hungarian. But if this is the price to pay for foreign guests to avoid the place becoming a touristic one, I'm gladly willing to pay it, and I'm ready to learn basic gastronomic Hungarian, just to be able to enjoy this really special place!
The only thing to improve: they close already at 10PM...

This is a cozy place with traditional dishes that’s worth visiting. However the key strength is the friendliness of the staff, they made our stay very specia :)

This nice litle restaurant is only 'off the beaten track' if the track for you consists only of tourist traps. There are at least 4 tram lines within a very few minutes walk, all of which will take you quickly back to your tourist havens if that's what you like. Nice atmosphere, attractive outdoor area, excellent food. One thing to note - when I was there they didn't have an English menu - which was probably sensible since the place was full of locals. And why does everyone complain about the service in Hungary? Coming from England we should be used to it!

I've been there around 3 times and will surely return again!
The location is tricky, you find it only if you are local,or if you know where to look for. The area is residential, nothing special.
The interior is newly renovated, the cozy garden is a bit aged, but still fine if you are looking for a traditional place to eat.
Food is very good, not a huge selection, but big enough to find your favourites. Seasonal meals are all good choices.
Staff is friendly and helpful, even during rush hours they do their best.
Once the meal was served rather cold, but they heat it if you ask,and it only happend one (during fullhouse).
I would recommend to anyone!

This place is really out of the way in Buda. It is located in an area surrounded by apartment blocks. It is worth a cab ride to get to and have an upscale meal at a reasonable cost. The special dumpling side with brazed sweet cabbage is excellent.
The soups were good but not great. We chatted with the chef and he knows about Hungarian cuisine. Some of the dishes are quite adventurous.
