Were attracted by the reviews. The place is nice and the staff is friendly. The owner sponsors his tasting dishes which are served in wooden containers But the food is all ready. Chips included. It's not a club that does x us. For what we paid, it gets better. It's like a cafeteria. The dishes are plentiful.

Had fantastic food and service here. The food is truly classic Hungarian dishes and very, very tasty. The staff were very helpful, bringing us extra plates to help us share dishes. My only regret is that the generous portions meant we were too full to manage a desert. Something to bear in mind: this is a buffet type (not self-served) arrangement until around 6.30 in the evening, when it then becomes a la carte. We arrived just as it was switching over, so didn't get a good look at the range of the buffet, but it did look like there was slightly less choice at the buffet. I will definitely be going here again next time I'm in Budapest.

Great Hungarian homemade food

The place is nothing fancy, but the food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the ladies speak perfect English and were very helpful with their explanations. It's canteen self-service for lunch and table service for dinner. There are many vegetarian options as well. Simply delicious, huge portions, though!

Beef Goulash or Goulash Soup? Not the same thing!?

Nice goulash soup but not what we ordered, which was Beef Goulash for €10. We were hungry and asked the young waiter for advice, asking what the goulash came with...we suggested ordering sides of cabbage or dumplings but he said not to because it came with potatoes bread and dumplings. We ordered it with beers and it arrived 20 seconds later. This felt rushed even though the place was empty. A watery bowl of goulash soup arrived. It was nice and had potatoes in it and beef and 2 or 3 tiny noodle /gnochi type things in it. And lots of nice thick bread. However it felt like a starter. We have had thick heavy goulash before with dumplings and cabbage, a proper mea, l but this was watery soup. When the bill came it was clear we had been given the Goulash Soup not the Beef Goulash main meal . This was despite pointing to the menu which said Beef Goulash €10 and suggesting extras to accompany it. The soup was around €5. Nice but not a proper full evening meal we hoped for. Also worth noting the place is more like a small cafe than a restaurant but it was clean and nice but empty at 7.45pm on a Thursday.

The restaurant functions as the most ordinary student canteen. Take the tray, stand in line and choose the food. The food is nothing special, you can feel that it was heated. We tried Lecso, based on others’ reviews, having arrived late in the city. We walked in just after 10pm and received a warm welcome. The service was friendly and the food arrived promptly. You certainly won’t go hungry if you dine here! I tried the Hungarian platter recommended by the boss - delicious! - and my husband went for a tenderloin steak which was huge and he thoroughly enjoyed. At about 10.45pm we started flicking through the menu looking at the desserts and the boss man came across looking anxious and saying that the kitchen had closed. No problem, my husband went for one of the pre-prepared desserts in the chiller. He wasn’t keen on it but another diner there at the same time raved about how good it was. The staff by this time were racing around bringing in tables, plants, moving mats and then turning off lights as other diners from upstairs came down the stairs. The boss man brought our bill (without us asking for it) and then reluctantly gave my husband a coffee (which he said was awful). We really felt like we’d overstayed our welcome and rushed out as they closed at 11pm. We went back for lunch and it’s a buffet during the day. Very popular with locals. Again we had huge meals that left us fairly stuffed for the rest of the afternoon: goulash, and a chicken and mushroom pasta dish. All very reasonably priced. So it’s a great place for trying Hungarian food, especially in the evening, but just don’t go too late! Definitely not a tourist trap.
