Hidden gem

Visited this restaurant on the 15th Feb 2020 just a few metres from our hotel, wow absolutely fabulous. Train carriage at the side of the park turned into a restaurant, really authentic inside booking is advised service is great food amazing and big portions, although I am giving everyone a wide berth today as I smell of garlic lol. Prices are great roughly 47.00 2 courses and 2 rounds of drinks , highly recommend this venue.

We wanted to try this restaurant specifically because the location was very unique, and I had no idea what kind of food it served. The setting is really pretty and cozy, with comfy seats and soft lights, and of course a very suggestive ambience. I was happy to find both the service and food were good too. The waiter was chill and friendly, and offered me an english menu after seeing I was struggling; the food I ordered was classic hungarian food (that I hadn't tried yet) with a garlic soup and fried pork with coleslaw on the side, very good and especially very filling. It was a very nice experience!

Quirky restaurant

In an old railway dining car, in the park by Budapest-Déli railway station. Easy to find by catching the Metro to Déli Pályaudvar station and taking the underpass. It was a memorable evening and quite amusing to wave at people walking past in the park. The Eastern European food (pork cutlets Gypsy-style & Stroganoff) was deliciously filling. Probably best to book as it is only one carriage.

Tourist trap

I went to Vagon étterem for a late lunch on a Wednesday at 14:30. I found the restaurant in a travelling app. One thing that caught my attention was that both the app and the restaurants own website said: “Every weekday between 14:00 and 17:00 we give 50% discount to all our meals!”. I had a nice garlic soup for a starter and a roasted goose leg for main course. Good food! When I received my bill no discount where to be seen. I pointed this out to the waiter and showed him they’re on website. After a moment he came back and said that they had no such discount, only a -15% on a few Chefs specials. So, in conclusion this is a restaurant with good food and a nice setting, but they take advantage of tourists: Tourist trap.

What is more, you are right becouse the english translation was not correct as you pointed out. According to the hungarian page and translation, the 50% price reduction is only concern for the Chef's offer from 14 pm to 17 pm. We would like to beg your pardon. Really Worth Vsiting

We went here for supper on our first night in Budapest. It was exactly what we were after and lived up to all the best reviews written here - staff were friendly and efficient. The food was great - we both had goulash soup followed by confit goose - both were delicious and served well. Service is quick and there was no fuss at all. Well worth a visit, especially as the location and design of the restaurant are a bit quirky and fun. Definitely would visit again.

Cozy place, good prices and nice staff

Incredible ambiance inside, it's like travelling on the Transiberian railway. The food was really good, they improved it a lot in the last years. Especially I would recommend the roasted goose with really crispy skin, and it's not expensive at all. The service also was excellent, Zoli, Norbi and Gábor were very nice with us, always polite and always with a smile :)

Lovely meal in cool surroundings

This restaurant has a very interesting and cool theme, as you are literally sitting in an ex-railway wagon while you eat. The menu has lots of choice, but personally all of us had the porkholt with cheese dumplings and enjoyed it greatly. We also had great and helpful service from Edina, who went out of her way to explain the menu. I would highly recommend having a meal here while you are in Budapest!

Unique Hungarian experience

If you’re looking for something unique in Budapest, I think we found the place. They served traditional Hungarian food the prices were extremely good and who had thought would be eating a meal on a nice warm train carriage. The place is on the Buda side of Budapest not far from the church.

Unfortunately for us our expectations weren't met, we had booked a table well in advance but on our arrival it seemed as though they couldn't be bothered & strangly just said" sit anywhere " . Our meals were OK but nothing special & rather rushed with no time between courses. Basically, this was to be a romantic meal in what we thought would be in a perfect setting 🤔 Unfortunately it was all a bit tired 😫. Our meals were not great either, passable. Obviously, this is my opinion on our experience . The chicken was dry, the side salad wasn't as fresh as expected & a bit sad. Staff were pleasent.

We visited Vagon Restaurant recently. The food was delicious and there was a large selection of Hungarian dishes. Very interesting place. We’ve never been in such a restaurant where the owner is sleeping at the table and the waiter would have wished us the hell out of it! We didn't stay too long.

I'm not the owner, but an employee who had a pretty hard day, but after 1 p.m. I sat down to write the orders close to the wedding, when I fell asleep at work due to the exhaustion of the whole day! I don't think that I put the lever in Everybody or at least I didn't want to scold anyone! I don't believe that this would be as big a crime as what happened in the last minutes of the Close time!

Lovely location and the novelty of the carriage makes it feel special, but that's as far as it goes. My husband and I had the spicy chicken with salad and flat bread. Our chicken was so dry and the portions of chicken were very small. The salad had no dressing and the only good thing about the meal was the flat bread. Our daughter had the chicken portions with chips from the childrens menu, which seemed alot fresher and was larger than our meals. It really wasn't anything special. Don't waste your time, it's yet another mediocre restaurant in Budapest.

I can highly recommend this restaurant. In addition to the pleasant atmosphere and the friendly and considerate staff (Zsuzsi & Edina), the food impresses with excellent Hungarian cuisine. Exactly how you want a culinary experience - typical food and the feeling of being valued as a guest. I will be happy to visit this restaurant again .

Unique place, but not that tasty food

We went there for dinner. The staff was nice, the place is unique and retro. The food came in huge portions and it tasted ok, but it was not that well prepared. I ordered chicken strips and it was really dry, the torteau was also dry and not fresh. Salad was fine but nothing special.

Dinner at the Vagon Etterem

We were given a lovely welcome at the Vagon Etterem and thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks. The atmosphere is really nice inside. Staff very friendly and helpful. The food was really tasty and full of flavour, great home cooking and well- presented. Portion size was generous too and the prices are very reasonable. Would definitely recommend and definitely return.

At first I was a bit shocked by other reviews, but I went with it, partly because of this video on YouTube with the title “I MUST BE CRAZY. Dinner in Budapest at Vagon Restaurant” in which someone travels 2,200 miles to eat here. To be honest, I didn't regret it. You must have a thing for trains because you are in a really old carriage. Service was good, friendly and fast. Dishes are excellent, traditional and also tasty. Special atmosphere for eating in a wagon. Definitely worth giving it a try.
