About
Pest-Buda doubles with Grandma’s homestyle Hungarian kitchen, using the best ingredients with love and care from our talented chef, Lajos Lutz. Pest-Buda Bistro is on the ground floor of Pest-Buda Hotel, the oldest hotel in Hungary, originally opened in 1696. Pest-Buda is an important gastronomic institution honoring Grandma’s Hungarian kitchen for several decades. We have worked for months to rediscover several Hungarian recipies and master the art of baking the perfect artisanal flamed pie. The combination of top-notch gastronomy and beautiful wines is both fresh and traditional without succumbing to typical Hungarian restaurant cliches. The whole experience is, of course, amplified by the Buda Castle’s stunning medieval setting. We only carry Hungarian wines and only those with a distinctive personality, reflective of a distinctive wine region. We feature several rare selections often not found anywhere else, and our extensive list is constantly changing.

I popped in for a respite from the 95 degree heat and had a large beer, tomato salad and chicken supreme. The waiter was attentive to my food allergy and service was good, low pressure and polite. Lunch was not inexpensive - for one person it was $11220 florint plus they add a 14.5% service. That was fine, although I didn’t see that printed on the menu, but at the time to pay, the machine asked for additional tip. When asked my sever, he said the service fee shown was for the restaurant and the rest was for staff… I left an additional 6% but I’m not sure about that . Nevertheless the total bill for a lunch on a Thursday afternoon was $13618 or $37 US! This is with no water, one 40ml beer and no cappuccino after. So, it was expensive but I will say the food was good.

We had a wonderful late dinner at Pest Buda Bistro when other places were closing and turned us away. The staff at Pest Buda was friendly and letting us know their kitchen is closing soon, so we ordered few dishes quickly, expecting just to be fed for our tiring legs. We ordered a beer, a goose liver dish, a fish soup, and a crispy duck leg. All of the dishes were surprisingly tasty. Especially the duck leg. It was cooked to perfection. We definitely will come back for a second visit. The location was very close to the Hilton hotel where we are staying.

On our day of arrival in Budapest we had dinner in this bistro in Buda: despite being late (for local dinner times) they welcomed us with kindness. We ate an exquisite Viennese with chips, drank an excellent glass of red recommended by the waiter, then concluded with a glass of Tokaji. Back at the hotel I realize I forgot my cute bag hanger... patience. After two days, after visiting Buda Castle, Matthias Church and walking in Buda we remember the delicious Viennese so we return to the Bistro. With great surprise the waiter of the dinner recognizes us, he had kept my bag hanger, great!!!!! This is Andrea I still want to thank him for his extraordinary kindness and professionalism. However congratulations to all the staff and the quality of the dishes. It is not obvious in very touristy areas, very good 👏

The rib-eye steak 🥩 was prepared well, but the quality of the meat was not premium as there were tendons in the meat that were hard to chew. The portion contained a lot of potatoes, but the rib-eye steak was of the size of a fillet mignon. The price is high for Budapest, because for one steak, one espresso and two coca-colas we paid 50 euros with taxes and service charge.

Pretty restaurant, unfortunately the food and prices do not meet expectations. We had the chicken paprikash, salad and chicken supreme. The chicken paprikash and salad were fine, nothing special. The chicken supreme was pink, when asked it was removed from the bill and returned to the kitchen. Elderflower cordial was not particularly elderflowery or sweet, it wasn’t to my personal taste. Aperol spritz was fine. We asked for tap water and were charged for water. The service was fine, the waiter was polite and they dealt with the raw chicken rather well. There was a 14.5% service charge added to an already expensive meal. In all fairness, it is in the castle district, the location is nice, even if the prices aren’t. The prices are average for the area but the food did not meet our expectations. Overall, would not recommend going out of your way to visit.

We didn't have a good experience! Laval near important sights of the city. We were in couples and children. The dishes are very small and to be honest, without taste. Nobody at the table praised. The service fee was doubled. After we saw in the bill, and there was the difficulty of the language we did not understand at the time we already had the service described. And yet the waiter asked for 6 to 13%. Very expensive dishes for what was offered.

At 5pm we enter the restaurant and book dinner for 10 people for the same evening. When we arrive they put us at two tables in two different rooms: one for 4 and one for 6, so we find ourselves forced to split up. The table of 4 is served immediately, the table of 6 after an hour of waiting. One of the orders arrives wrong, another 10 minutes to get it right. A mixed salad is served in an aperitif bowl, practically impossible to season and mix. A second course of meat is so tough that it is inedible...so much so that they deducted it from our bill. In general the cuisine is not bad, but the organization and, I must say, the dislike make me eliminate it from the list of restaurants to recommend.

Average food. OK service. I was shocked to be charged for tap water. I checked and confirmed, there was a charge for tap water for the table - this is something I have not experienced in any quality establishment across Europe. Tap water is aways free when you are having a meal.

Loved this restaurant! A lot of Hungarian restaurants that serve local cuisine are too heavy. Not this one. The meals are clean (not fussy) but delicious as they use locally sourced ingredients and you can tell they’re cooked with love. I had the steak and my husband had the pork knuckle. Very tasty. Meal sizes perfect. Dessert was lovely too. We had the chocolate soufflé which was more like a pudding. Ambience was very quaint and on a lovely street. We really enjoyed it a lot and would definitely recommend.

We had dinner in Buda in this place because it is close to our hotel. Good goulash. Then I had some very soft pork with sauces. My husband took the Viennese cutlet which was very dry (although he enjoyed) water and a beer. Very high count considering that among other things we had dinner without even a tablecloth...

The service was very good, and the food very tasty - I had piglet knuckle which turned out to be roasted ham hock! The accompanying baby potatoes were so soft and sweet, truly a delicious combo! But the advertised peas were absent. Only a bit of a pea pod, or shards of!, had been dotted about the plate. It would have been 5/5 if the peas had been present! Charming little bistro, full of character, and not just the staff. Plan to try other dishes from their menu of mainly Hungarian cuisine.

The food and the place wouldn't be bad if not for the exorbitant prices, the best part was that they came with the bill or when asked to pay with local currency by card they applied the exchange rate in euros in their favour, furthermore they said that the service was not included and they made us choose how much to give as a percentage of the service, when it was already 14.5% on the bill... the icing came when it was time to get up when I found chewing gum stuck to my trousers which was on the pillow and as a refund for the inconvenience they offered me a couple of coffees. In short: food isn't everything. The service is miserable and the clarity is the same. Such a pity! They really make us look bad.

Only around 100 yards from the main centre of action we came across this charming restaurant. Considering the location it was no tourist trap and we sat outside and were served a very nice lunch along with some interesting craft beers. Well priced for location and quality of food.

If what you want is to eat batter...this is your place! We didn't find anything good, the chicken was raw and battered and the pork fillet was very fine and, of course, battered, imagine! Juicy as hell, 🤔. The beer is the best and it's Belgian! Don't go in, because like a good Spaniard, you will like to eat well, go down to the city and there you will find something better no matter how bad it may be. Besides being cheap, nothing at all, 55 euros plus the tip if you want to leave, of course.

Located on the Buda hill just behind the Castle, informal but good for both the selection of Hungarian cuisine and the choice of wines that can also be drunk by the glass. We were there twice for dinner and lunch with my wife and we both ordered the really delicious and highly recommended Viennese. The waiter Andrea was very kind and advised us in choosing the wine to match the dishes; we no longer wanted dessert and so we ended with a glass of Tokaji. Giacomo and Emma from Turin
