We are a family-business traditional Hungarian restaurant with tipical home style meals and friendly service. The best place to try the real authentic Hungarian cuisine. We serve the traditional Hungarian gulash soup, stuffed sour cabbage, crispy duck leg etc. like our grandmother used to make. We went for the 3 course meal, for 2 people for 5,000 HUF each. We had a complimentary starter of smoked chorizo on bread, Beef Goulash, Duck or Cabbage and then choice of 3 desserts. We had apricot doughnuts and chocolate hazelnut sponge. Live music was lovely. Atmosphere was relaxed. Staff were so friendly.

Very cool retro restaurant with lovely staff. If you're after Hungarian cuisine this is the place to eat at. My goats cheese starter was a little too heavy/big for me personally ( I think if it was rather 4 mini bites would be better than two very large, not very appealing looking ones, that's just me though). My pork mince and cabbage main was tasty. Had I realised the portion size I would have probably skipped the starter. The steak main looked 👌🏾. They also serve a complimentary dish - minced sausage on bread with a dip (lovely and spicy), a nice touch! Presentation is very pretty with the patterned plates. Overall a lovely experience.
Tip - can be busy so recommend making a reservation

It was love on the first sight with the interiour design, ethno elements, dishes and very lovely service. The food just kept coming, while waiting for the main meal, we got for free small patte bites, home made bread and spicy paprica cream. Food we had was so tasty, full of different flavours, presentation on a plate was attractive and personal working ther were so considerable and nice. And the food and the atmosphere was wonderful. I am definitely coming back :)

Retek was an amazing find. The three course set menu at less than 6,000HUF is such great value. The goulash was terrific as was the duck and the desserts hit the spot! Do make sure you book though. There are only eight tables but it is well worth it. Don’t miss out!

For our last lunch in Budapest, we chose this little restaurant in a tiny street close to the heart of the city. Even though they were fully booked, they welcomed us and the service was excellent. We had the best food experience of the entire trip! They offered us a typical spicy starter and a traditional cherry liqueur at the end of the meal. Thank you for the wonderful experience and service, hope to see you again guys!

We visited as a couple on our holiday and were so glad we were able to get a table! The restaurant is small with limited seating so you need to book to make sure you get a table - you won't regret it. Service was amazing and the waitress was helpful in recommending dishes to try. The cuisine is all authentic, home cooked Hungarian food - the veal stew was absolutely delicious! Prices were very reasonable given the excellent quality of the food. A complimentary appetizer and shot of Hungarian liqueur topped the meal of perfectly. Cannot recommend enough.

We went there the first day of our trip to Budapest. We were very lucky to find a table. We knew we would taste great food from the starter which was smoky sausage spread on piece of bread. We ordered goulash soup, lagos, baked sausay, viel paprikas and paprika meat balls. Everything was great. We then visited some other places in Budapest but couldn't compare to Retek, so we went there again. We ordered mushroom soup, lecso, pork medallions and chicken drumsticks. We also drunk red Portugeiser wine. Everything was delicious, one portion was enough for two, but most of all the stuff was one of the most kind and helpful we' ve met (they were extremely polite with our children). An absolutely must.

We visited this restaurant in Budapest during a short visit to the city. This very small restaurant was recommended for its traditional Hungarian food. It did not disappoint! We tried the"Retek" menu with soup, entree and dessert. They let us try two different menus so we could sample many of the Hungarian dishes. We tried the Hungarian goulash and mushrooms soups (both excellent with the right amount of spice). We had the stuffed sour cabbage and Crispy Duck Leg entrees. We loved both, but thought the stuffed cabbage was the winner. For dessert, we had the cottage cheese dumplings and the sponge cake. Again, both were tasty with the dumplings as the winner. Despite the very warm temperatures in Budapest during our visit, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would highly recommend this restaurant if you want to sample some amazing traditional Hungarian food.

I visited Budapest only for one day and im so lucky that i had chance to be in this wonderful place. It was one of my wishes to try some authentic Hungary cuisine. The restaurant is quite busy and so small, its giving feelings to guests that they are invited for home dinner to very hospitality man. About food, everything was amazing, portions is to big, I ordered 3 cours meal and couldn't finish it all, but to tasty. Highly recommend this place, must visit.

Excellent hungarian food and great service ! As a solo traveller, it is very common to get turned down by restaurants at peak hours even if there are tables around (maybe to save it for bigger group) but happy that they didnt do this. I would say do make a reservation as there are at least 5 groups of people got turned away during lunch time because it was full.
Also, shoutout to the waitresses for the great service (didnt feel like they are rushing me throughout the meal) especially Barbara !

Amazing service with a smile! Me and my partner had a lovely meal here. Lovely local traditional food. Family run which we love and the restaurant is lovely and quant. A pianist playing whilst you eat, a lovely experience! They even brought a sparkler out to celebrate our anniversary :)
I had the chicken which was lovely with traditional sauce and cheese. My partner had the retek menu which is the goulash, duck and a dessert, hers was by far the nicest meal we have had in a while and so reasonably priced for duck!!! Would definitely recommend.

Budapest has many exceptional restaurants with multi-course, prix fixe meals with wine pairings that showcase the most innovative chefs in the region (and for a price of course). But if you want the real deal, Hungarian food at its best, Retek is the place. In addition to great food at a very affordable price, the staff is super-friendly and helpful, and the place has charm for days. Word of warning: it's tiny, maybe 7 or 8 tables, so make a reservation if you're going for dinner. Great place for lunch, and you can usually just walk in.

It's always tricky when you book based on reviews, and whether your experience will match up to those before you... This restaurant absolutely does.
The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful, and they were incredibly attentive. The little restaurant is very sweet, decorated in a nostalgic style.
The food was lovely, authentic and rich. We were so full that we couldn't order dessert, a decision I still regret!
We booked in advance via email, and I'm glad we did - as others said before, it's not big!

This is a small, unpretentious restaurant a few blocks from St. Istvan Church. The service is prompt and friendly. It’s one of the few restaurants that actually offers you water upon seating. I had the Goulash soup and roast duck leg. The soup was flavorful with large chunks of tender beef. The duck leg was accompanied by very filling cheesy, thick pasta and white cabbage. Unfortunately, no room for dessert. The restaurant offers all diners a small amuse bouche at the start and a glass of cherry brandy at the end of the meal. A very nice touch in my view that makes one want to come back. A 15% gratuity is added to the bill, which is a little higher than other Budapest restaurants.

Located centrally Retek was thoughtfully decorated , and had a Pianist creating a nice ambience when we were there. There was a wide selection of Hungarian food which was of excellent quality and nicely presented. The recommended house wine was really tasteful and a good price, and the service was of a high standard. What more do you want?
