About
At Edes Macko, everything revolves around kurtoskalacs, or chimney cake. Founded by the team of Vitez Kurtos, the venue offers a wide and colourful variety of the traditional Transylvanian delicacy, includ- ing chimney cake zserbo, floating islands with pieces of chimney cake, and poppy seed chimney cake with vanilla custard. In addition, Edes Macko awaits visitors inside Budapest’s new Holnemvolt Var next to the Zoo with refreshing coffee specialties and lemonades. You can taste their wonderful sweets without having to pay the entry fee to either the playpark or the zoo: Edes Macko’s entrance is located opposite of Szechenyi Baths.

It's located right near the Szécheny baths, the zoo, city park, Vajdahunyad castle and Heroes' Square, a perfect place to relax a bit and eat some delicious dessert! The cakes come in take-away boxes, but they have a few tables and chairs on the street so you can eat it in place too. The traditional kürtős kalács was perfect, but we also tried some of the "modern" variations with pudding and raspberry dip. They offer gluten free cakes too on Wednesdays and Fridays. Despite some bad reviews from years ago, the staff was kind and friendly, we had no issues at all. Now they have English menu too. Prices are normal, great value for the money.

Delicious kürtöskalács and hot chocolate with a mountain of fresh whipped cream. Cute covered seating and indoors too. We had to wait 20 minutes but totally worth it as they made them to order and they came piping hot from the oven! We had enough for breakfast the next day as they are huge. I always come here when in Pest.

We read that this lovely little cafe did gluten free chimney cake on a Wednesday. Popped along and bought a cinnamon one - oh my goodness, delicious! No cream unfortunately but they explained that is because the pastry is so delicate. We went back and bought a vanilla one - also delicious! Really friendly and helpful

We were trying to find somewhere to eat in the morning before going in the baths. We came across Edes randomly, English menus on the table helped and they numbered things so we could just say what we wanted. Food was really nice and whilst food has been lovely in Budapest this is still one of the favourite things we had in the week here

I was told by a local guide that this was the best place for the famous Chimney Cake. Well, the guide was right. It was fantastic. Right across from the largest Bath House in Budapest. Great coffee, too.

They charged higher price for a cake I didn't even ask for and made me wait for it although they had previously said it was ready to take. Manager on duty was not helpful to settle the issue either.

Edes Macko is in the north east part of Varosliget park. I stopped in for a morning coffee, and ordered a cappucino quickly prepared by a smiling barista) with horn pastry (a local specialty of flaky rings with nuts and spices, freshly baked and delicious). I ate outside in a shady terrace, a nice setting in the park. The staff was friendly, the dining area was clean, and I thought prices were reasonable, considering the location in the city park.

We popped in after a visit to the zoo as I wanted to try the famous Chimney Cake for the first time in my life. It didn't disappoint! It was freshly prepared, delicious and a must for anyone in the area. My mouth is watering just thinking about it while writing this review!!

Walking around Varosliget near Szechenyi I found this little local jewel. Kürtosckalacs is normally a bit much for me, but here are so many wonderfull tasty variations in a down to earth atmosphere that is more than worth visiting.

I had a "madárlátta". Nicely served with small pieces of Chimney Cake based on traditional recepie from Székelyland. Traditional and trendy in one dessert. It is not too sweet, just perfectly done. I can only recommend it.

The staff at Edes Macko really seemed to detest their customers. I asked what gluten free options they had and was given an eye-roll, then told they only had GF options on Wednesdays. Strange but whatever. I asked for a fruit tea and was offered green tea. Then, I was told they didn’t serve fruit tea. I pointed it out on the menu, was given an eye-roll, then they found cherry-blueberry tea. I asked for honey. Eye-roll. Then, I asked for a macchiato. I was told they couldn’t make any because they only serve “latte macchiato”. I settled for something else. I asked for a to-go cup. Eye-roll. I wanted to pay by card. More eye-rolls and some angry whispering amongst staff members. This was a Saturday afternoon and there were no other customers but us yet there were four baristas standing around at the tiny stand, getting annoyed at... what exactly? I really don’t get what their problem was but will never be back, that’s for sure.
