I’ve visited this restaurant a couple of times during my thirty-day-stay in Budapest and both times my company and I have been welcomed warmly. Love the ambiance, the staff and the food. I love their Goulash! Highly recommended. And to top it off, honest prices!

Visited here on Sunday 15th March on the last night of our trip to Budapest. We wanted to experience some traditional food, and we weren't disappointed. Whether it was the effect of their national holiday or the coronavirus, the restuarant was very quiet... Only 7...of us in. This must obviously have affected the team but that being said, the lady that served us was helpful and friendly. Being veggie i was pleased to find a variety of dishes for me including an aubergine dip as a starter, and a cheesy pasta for main. The other half had crispy carp for starter with beef goulash for main. The food was delicious and ended our trip on a high. Let's hope that little gem of a restaurant survives the coronavirus pandemic particularly with a decrease in tourist numbers. When all this virus madness is over.... Visit this restaurant and enjoy a fabulous Hungarian meal.More

Fantastic friendly atmosphere, try their goulash its great. Traditional Hungarian musicians play there, it really adds to the atmosphere. I would go back to Budapest just to experience that restaurant again.

Good food and authentic Hungarian musicians. No rush and lovely wine advice. Thank you for a lovely evening.

This is a large traditional Hungarian restaurant near the city centre. We had a large sharer platter which, for about £25, offers good value. Service charge is added to the bill as standard.

Great place with good food, life music and good service. I recommend Brassov style port. Gulasch is in good average quality. Great Gypsy band!

I stopped in for a quick bite, late lunch but the menu was so terrific that I had early dinner instead! The duck leg on a bed of sour red cabbage and sweet potato fries was the best thing I ate in all of Budapest....Clearly, the fires were done in the duck fat -- crispy and hot. SO good! On top of that, service was outstanding in this charming little gem of a restaurant, with my table next to the window for people watching. I could have spent hours there and can't recommend highly enough.More

Magdalena Merlo is a beautiful restaurant so you can understand my disappointment when my meal did not meet the expectations created by the ambiance. The money spent on decor would have been better spent on hiring a cook. I didn't find the service any slower...than other Budapest restaurants. In fact the staff was friendly and prompt. The prices were reasonable with a steak going for for $18.37 US. My soup was just over $3 and my beer was just over $2. With tax my meal came to $26.66 US. the food however was horrible. I began with a pea soup that was supposed to contain pumpkin and fresh trout. I had visions of a thick home made pea soup with pieces of trout mixed in as ham or bacon often is. What i got was a Kelly green thin soup that was probably from a mix with some kind of black sauce (pumpkin?) squirted in. A stick of trout was inserted into the side like a spoon. You really have to view my photo to appreciate. For the main course I ordered a steak : Medium Rare. I got an overdone piece of meat that was blackened to a crisp, as was the mushroom on top of it. Again, only my accompanying photo can do the description justice. I was told that my side dish (French Fries) were home made but by home made they must have meant frozen and cooked at home. They were over cooked, dried out and looked like yesterdays potatoes. No one ever uttered the words "How was everything?" So they must have realized that what they were serving was totally unacceptable. They should be ashamed for serving food in such pitiful condition. This place is easily avoidable.More

We went here for a meal and had a platter for two with all sorts of amazing food! We also tried some very excellent Hungarian wine called kekfrankos. We would absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting Budapest and are going back again tomorrow!

Food amount, good. Food quality, good. We ordered, vegetable risotto plus chicken breaded with cheese plus son chips. Drinks very good (Homemade limonade) Service, a disaster. We had to wait more than 15 minutes only for the drinks. We had to ask for our order...after 35 minutes waiting. Waiter didn't even apologize. We couldn't finish the whole portion so we asked for some containers which were charged separately. We do not recommend this restaurant.More
