This restaurant was already on our radar when we arrived in Bled for a 4 night stay as it was well reviewed and within easy walking distance of our accommodation.
On the first night we hadn't made a reservation, which seemed to somewhat disappoint the...owner, but we were nonetheless granted a table. The restaurant is situated in a fine stone building and is divided inside into several small and characterful areas. It's very close to the centre of Bled but seems a world away from the glitzy core of the town.
The proprietor, who evidently came to the restaurant trade after a career that led him to other countries, is clearly passionate about presenting local cuisine and promoting Slovenian wines. He is energetic and very visibly in charge, running a tight ship.
The menu is compact, as you would expect for a relatively small restaurant that serves tasty, freshly made food of good quality. On the first visit my starter was a smooth cauliflower soup followed by a filling plate of chicken breast served with potato and pea puree. The second time I chose slow cooked pork belly with buckwheat dumplings and parsnip mash and it was excellent.
The wine list is fascinating but I would have been choosing at random given the unfamiliar names and grape varieties if eager help from the waiting staff wasn't readily to hand.
I guess for a fairly expensive town the cost of the meals wasn't too bad but, at almost EUR 100, our second meal there turned out to be our most expensive meal of a 2 week trip to Slovenia and Austria during which we ate consistently well.More
