The Copernicus Restaurant in Kraków is a gourmet temple and one of the leading restaurants in the city, if not in Poland. It is a tastefully furnished restaurant on the ground floor of the five-star Copernicus Hotel. The restaurant opened in 2000 (at the same...time as the hotel) and therefore has a certain tradition to look back on. The restaurant has no windows to the street. From the outside, the house looks rather uninviting. I even considered whether I should actually go inside or go to the restaurant „Pod Nosem", which is only a few steps away from Copernicus and looks much more inviting from the outside. There are two dining areas in the Copernicus Restaurant: the atrium area and the chimney room. Probably the two best tables are in the chimney room. These are the table in the library and the table next to the chimney. Intimacy is preserved here. I was lucky enough to get the table next to the chimney. On this evening, a 5-course and a 7-course menu was offered. There was also a 9-course meal on the menu. However, the waiter explained to me that it was already too late for this (at 8 p.m.). I opted for the 5 course menu. The food was excellent and included several "greetings from the kitchen" in addition to the regular courses. Here the restaurant showed that it deserves its place among the leading restaurants in Kraków. However, the restaurant cannot score with the wines. Wine pairing is not offered, which is unusual for a gourmet restaurant. Although the wine list includes over 100 wines, the number of wines by the glass is limited. There are just 11 wines on the wine list, which can be ordered by the glass, including 3 red wines and 3 white wines. I chose a red wine from Trentino/South-Tirol (Lagrein Riserva). The wine was okay, but not a special taste experience. The bill came to 474 zlotys. I asked the waiter if service is included, which he denied. I then gave a 50 zloty tip in cash. I later found out that the bill already included a service fee of 50 zlotys. So I actually gave 100 zlotys. You can consider tipping in addition to the service charge. However, this requires that you get a correct answer to the question of whether the service is already included. The waiter should have pointed out that the bill already includes a service charge, but a tip is appreciated.More
